Dell's XPS 15z Ultra Slim Notebook Review

Every so often, a company does something unexpected; something that sets the bar for its competition and really grabs the attention of potential consumers for one reason or another. Dell is a company that is capable of this and has done so in the past in both their desktop and notebook lines. While Dell has been known for pushing out a huge number of "beige boxes" years back, they're also the company that helped reinvigorate the ultraportable market thanks to the original Adamo, and with the help of Alienware, they're putting together some similarly interesting products lately, in the gaming space as well. For some, Dell may historically have an undeserved reputation for producing run-of-the-mill products, but when you look at their recent smartphone offering like the Venue Pro, slates like the 5-inch Streak and computers like the Adamo XPS, it's hard to not give 'em credit where credit is due. Enter the XPS 15z. For all intents and purposes, this is yet another standout product from Dell, one that simply cannot be lumped into standard mainstream categories. There's something fundamentally different about the 15z that commands a second look, and in our case, an in-depth review of its features and capabilities..

Dell XPS 15z Review

The Dell XPS 15z has an ultra-thin metal chassis, a beautiful 1080p display and a backlit keyboard. Add to that an Intel Core i7 processor and Nvidia GeForce dedicated graphics for serious multimedia performance. Is this a worthy competitor to the Apple MacBook Pro?Build and DesignThe XPS 15z resembles a MacBook Pro especially when the lid is closed; the darker-colored palm rest and hinge design are major differentiators. This notebook is mostly constructed out of high-quality metal; the bright silver outside is milled aluminum and the dark gray palm rest is magnesium alloy. Even the screen bezel is metal. The XPS 15z feels very solid to the touch and it is; the chassis hardly bends when flexed and the lid's aluminum backing keeps it from twisting too much. The display hinge is strong and doesn't allow the display to wobble when let go abruptly. Additionally, the display can be opened with one hand which is convenient. I'm not a fan of the physical appearance of the hinge; it's not in sync with the rest of the chassis in terms of color or texture. Overall the XPS 15z is one of the most solid feeling notebooks I've tested in some time. Those looking to upgrade the 15z are in for a rough ride.

Dell Studio 15z

Part of Best Buy’s exclusive Blue Label lineup of notebooks, the Dell Studio 15z ($949) pairs strong performance with the convenience of Intel’s Wireless Display technology for streaming video to your home theater. The notebook’s bright 15.6-inch screen, comfortable backlit keyboard, and high-quality speakers combine to make this a strong mainstream system for both families and students. However, this ins’t our favorite WiDi laptop. At 5.4 pounds and 15 x 9.9 x 1 inches, the Dell Studio 15z is hardly an ultraportable but is light enough for lugging around the house or the dorm. And, in comparison to the 6.2-pound Acer Aspire 5740, the Dell seems rather svelte. If you’re familiar with Dell’s Studio line (like the Studio 14z), you’ll find few surprises in the Studio 15z’s aesthetic. Its soft-plastic lid, available only in Cappuccino brown, has a rubberized texture that resists fingerprints. The bezel, sides, and bottom are made from glossy black plastic, while the deck is adorned in glossy, light gold plastic that features a subtle square parquet pattern. You’ll either love it or hate it. The keyboard features matte black keys, ringed in glossy black bezel. Like those of other notebooks in Best Buy’s exclusive Blue Label program, the keys are backlit.
