Dell Latitude Z600 review

The Dell Latitude Z600 is Dell's take on a high-end business laptop. Sporting a striking design, there is a wealth of impressive software on offer to make this an excellent choice for those who take their business seriously. The machine certainly looks the part and the soft-touch cherry-red finish is both functional and attractive. The laptop's wide chassis means there's plenty of room for a large backlit keyboard, but we feel the space could have been better utilised – with a dedicated numeric keypad, for example. The typing action itself is excellent, however, despite a bit of flex. Dell Capture The laptop is crammed with proprietary software to make your life easier, like Dell Capture which uses the laptop's webcam to take photos of business cards, which you can catalogue and even export to your Outlook address book. It's quick, intuitive and not at all gimmicky. It also lets you scan documents and convert them to PDF format for easy organisation or emailing. The right-hand-side of the laptop's screen frame is touch-sensitive. When you touch the bottom of the frame a number of options appear, giving you touch-access to various applications. It also lets you scroll up and down documents quickly and easily, instead of using the touchpad.

Dell Latitude Z600

Executives looking to impose their status on underlings should take a gander at the Dell Latitude Z600. This strikingly thin notebook with a large 16-inch display was tailor made for the corner office. A soft touch finish, chrome accents, and two cool technologies—induction charging and wireless USB—will inspire envy. Plus, you can get some work done in instant-on mode, which uses its own ARM processor, to save battery life. Unfortunately, at $3,806 as configured ($1,799 starting price), this notebook doesn’t come cheap and its endurance is lacking. Does this luxury business laptop’s strengths outweigh the drawbacks? Even from afar, you can see that the Z600 is a stylish machine. The purple-maroon cover has a soft touch finish, and is set off by angular chrome accents that bracket the battery. While it’s very thin—just 0.6 inches—it also has a very large footprint, at 15.6 x 11.6 inches, similar to the Acer Aspire Timeline 5810T. In some respects, the angular features on the rear make the Z600 reminiscent of a very expensive portfolio. The design even extends to the power brick, which has a glossy black finish. At 5 pounds with the extended battery, and 4.6 pounds with the regular battery, the Z600 isn’t as light as an ultraportable, but neither is it uncomfortable to carry around.

Dell Latitude Z600

We're still waiting on final test results, but Dell has created a future-forward bit of tech that's good for the status-seeking businessman. Everyone else: Look on from afar. You read car magazines for reviews of wheels you want to buy--and of the odd machine that you'd never be able to afford in a million years but can admire from afar. That's the Dell Latitude Z600 ultraslim laptop. Wait--a "sexy" Dell Latitude? It's hardly practical--or economical--but if you're into forward-thinking tech, this portable that starts at around $2000-plus is worth a good longing look. (Our review unit, as configured, sells for a mere $4323 with its wireless charger and base station). First observation: The Z600 is wide and way thin. We're talking a laptop with a 16-inch screen and only 0.57 inch thick (and weighs about 4.5 pounds with the standard 4-cell battery). It defies logic creating a machine this big, yet thinner than many ultraportables. You'll want to take it everywhere and show it off, but since it has a 16-inch screen, you'll have a tougher time finding a bag it will fit in. (For what it's worth, Sony's recently unveiled VAIO X Series ultraportables are a whole 0.02 inch thinner.).
