Dell Latitude E6420 XFR

Most consumers and business people have a vast number of choices when it comes to laptops. But when your work requires a certain level of security to protect the data within, there are far fewer options available. Dell has manufactured such a laptop, a special line of fully-ruggedized notebooks outfitted with bumpers on every corner and a chassis that's dust-tight. Simply put, the Dell Latitude E6420 XFR ($5,612 direct) is a fortress in a clamshell form factor. It meets the standards of a suite of drop and military tests, and its list of components includes a fast combination of an SSD and Core i7 processor that will help you not only boot your system quickly, but make quick work of any productivity tasks. And even if you're out in the field all day, the Latitude E6420's battery will last you over half the day and with the extra 30Wh battery handy, you'll easily be able to make it through the whole day without worry. Like most rugged laptops, the Latitude E6420 XFR is quite thick, measuring 2.2 inches. It sports a design that resembles a briefcase, with a handle protruding just underneath the palm rest. Its hefty weight of 9.38 pounds comes as no surprise, given its black PR-72 ultra polymer exterior and magnesium alloy interior.

Dell Latitude E6420 XFR Review

To say the 14-inch Dell Latitude E6420 XFR could take a licking would be an understatement. The fully rugged MIL-STD tested notebook can withstand anything from 6-foot drops to wind-blown rain, making it ideal for those working in hazardous locations. Equipped with a Core i7 processor, a bright display, and a long-lasting battery, the E6420 XFR can handle heavy-duty tasks without breaking a sweat. But is this rough and tumble notebook worth its $5,612 price tag?Click to EnlargeThe Dell Latitude E6420 XFR looks more like a small tank than a notebook. The entire gray chassis is made from PR-72 ultra-polymer and a magnesium alloy that can absorb a lot of abuse. XFR logos inscribed on either side of the lid gives the notebook a tough, chiseled look. The center of the lid has a gunmetal plate with a simple crosshatch design and a raised Dell insignia. Each corner of the notebook has a black rubber bumper, providing additional protection against the inevitable drop. A sturdy black metal latch is located on the front of the system to secure the lid.On the E6420 XFR, ports that are normally exposed and vulnerable on traditional laptops are protected by covers secured by black sliding latches.

Dell Latitude XFR E6420 review

The market for rugged laptops is select and Dell has done an impressive job with the Latitude XFR 6420 by focusing on what's important. Build quality is excellent and extra features show real attention to detail. The XFR looks ready for anything. The tough, plastic composite chassis is together with plenty of screws and any point of the laptop likely to come into contact with the ground is shrouded in tough rubber. There's even a built-in handle that enables you to carry the entire 4.5kg machine like a briefcase. There was no flex around the chassis at all. The entire machine is harder than a coffin nail and all the ports are hidden by dust covers that mean mud, dirt, water, sand or any other muck won't get inside and play havoc with the connections. Dell hasn't put a Super-TFT coating over the 14.1-inch screen, meaning you'll be able to see what you're doing when using the XFR outside. There are no reflections and the display itself is very bright. However, colours look whitened and washed out, which is noticeable when you're watching videos or looking at pictures. The XFR is not intended as a multimedia machine, though, so the lack of a rich colour palette is forgivable. Limited keyboard Unfortunately, we can't say the same about the keyboard.
