Dell Latitude E6420 Review: Great Notebook With a Multitouch Option

The Dell Latitude E6420 is a good-performing 14-inch business notebook with stellar build quality and a lot of neat options. Users can configure the notebook to have a multitouch display, a fast Intel quad-core processor, discrete-class (higher-end) graphics, up to 4GB of memory, and a 256GB capacity solid state drive.Build and DesignThe Dell Latitude E6420 is encased in Dell's business-rugged, MIL-STD 810G-tested Tri-Metal casing just like the E6420's little sister, the Latitude E6320. The "tri-metal" comes from a anodized aluminum display lid, reinforced steel in the hinges, and magnesium alloy in the chassis and frame. The notebook also has a zinc alloy latch, a spill resistant keyboard, and an LCD seal to help prevent scratches and bumps. All of that extra metal and thought the designers put into its construction indeed makes it very durable. When we pressed down on the chassis and around the palm rest, it didn't budge. When we bent the lid of the display around the thick screen bezel, it did budge just a bit - but it was barely noticeable, and wasn't noticeable enough to create any ripples across the display. The reinforced steel hinges are also very sturdy; we don't suppose they'll give users any problems whatsoever.

Dell Latitude E6420-ATG

The Dell Latitude E6420-ATG ($3,348 direct) business laptop is built like a tank, designed to venture where other laptops fear to tread. From its semi-rugged construction to its beefy second-generation Intel Core i7 processor, this laptop is made to take a beating while providing all of the functionality you need from a professional laptop. It's sleeker than its fully-rugged counterparts, like the Getac V200 ($5,177 direct, 3.5 stars) and Dell Latitude E6420 XFR ($5,612 direct, 4 stars), which sport a bulky frame and bumpers on every corner. However, the Latitude E6420-ATG is still one tough laptop that will be suitable for the business worker at home, in the field, or in the boardroom. The E6420-ATG is designed to withstand extreme conditions. It's rated for a variety of harsh environments, including dust, humidity, and vibration. The stringent MIL-STD 810G testing requirements means that even if you drop it, smack it, bump it, or spill on it, you know you'll still be able to fire it up and get your work done. The triple-metal construction includes a magnesium-alloy skeleton, an anodized aluminum lid, and a powder-coat magnesium-alloy bottom panel. This same metal construction extends to the steel hinges and zinc-alloy latch mechanism.

Dell Latitude E6420

The Dell Latitude E6420 aims to be your best business buddy, offering various security options and a sturdy shell. Sadly, it doesn't seem to care as much about performance or good looks.The model we were supplied with contains an Intel Core i3 processor, 4GB of RAM and, for some ridiculous reason, is apparently only available over the phone directly from Dell. The company also told us that this laptop retails for around £900. That seems implausible, though, as the Core i5 and i7 models, which are available as normal through Dell's online store, start at £890 for the base i5 model up to around £1,250 for the base i7 model. We'll treat our review sample as a preview model until more definitive details emerge concerning the laptop's availability.The E6420 aims to be an all-round business performer. As such, it's going to have to put up with a life on the go as you lug it from conference centre to conference centre, whipping it quickly in and out of that lovely leather bag you got for Christmas. At 352 by 24 by 324mm, it doesn't exactly qualify as an ultra-portable laptop, though. Nor is it particularly light. Still, it's nowhere near as gargantuan as the mind-blowingly huge Asus NX90, so it will happily make a home in your briefcase.

Dell Latitude E6420 ATG Review

If the Dell Latitude E6420 ATG seems familiar, it should. It's the semi-rugged version of the business-centric Latitude E6420, which has a stylish, durable design and great keyboard. Dell has built on those strengths by beefing up the system's durability and ruggedness, and adding a solid state drive for even greater performance. Our configuration even includes a touchscreen, which field workers might appreciate. But do those improvements warrant the $3,012 price tag?Like the E6420, the E6420 ATG's MIL-STD810G tested, Tri-Metal chassis is designed to withstand almost anything business users can throw at it, including drops, extreme heat and cold, and dust. Its lid is covered in sharp gray, anodized brushed aluminum that is bordered by a black, textured scratch-resistant hard plastic, which helps make the lid feel exceedingly sturdy. The lid also has two conveniently placed status lights in the upper right-hand corner that turn on when the system is in use and running low on battery power. The underside of the unit is protected by the same black, powder-coated magnesium base found on the E6420. Other features carried over from the E6420 are the system's metal hinges and sturdy closing latch, but on the ATG, the ports are protected by rubber covers.

Dell Latitude E6420 ATG

What does $3000 get you in a business laptop these days? With the Dell Latitude E6420 ATG, it buys top-flight computing speed and nearly half a day's battery life packed into a feature-rich chassis with a fortified case that might stop some bullets. But the $3136 (as of June 15, 2011) price tag of our test configuration isn't the only drawback. At 6.5 pounds, the E6420 ATG is nearly a pound heavier than its less pricey (but still beefy) 14-inch sibling, the Latitude E5420. The Latitude E6420 ATG certainly delivers superior computing power: Configured with Intel's high-end quad-core Core i7-2620M running at 2.7GHz, 4GB of DDR3 RAM, Intel HD graphics, a 128GB solid-state drive, and the 64-bit version of Windows 7 Professional, it racked up a WorldBench 6 score of 136, breezing past the E5420 and all entrants on our current (as of June 5) all-purpose laptops chart. It isn't a gaming notebook, though. Lacking discrete graphics, the E6420 ATG posted scores on our gaming tests that were on a par with those of other Intel HD graphics-based portables (including the E5420, which uses the same graphics chipset). At least with the E6420 ATG you can pay extra to add an Nvidia graphics card, an option you don't get with the E5420.

Keep reading to find out more about this semi-rugged laptop.Our Dell Latitude E6420 ATG Specifications: Build and DesignThe Dell Latitude E6420 ATG represents a fundamental shift in the way that Dell handles its semi-rugged business notebooks. The old ATG models were essentially nothing more than standard Dell Latitude notebooks with a different lid along with a few other bits and MIL SPEC tests. The E6420 ATG on the other hand features a completely unique chassis design made from generous amounts of magnesium alloy, rubber gaskets covering the data ports and a spill-proof backlit keyboard with drain hole. The E6420 ATG is the first Dell ATG model to meet or exceed MIL-STD-810G and IP5x standards for vibration, humidity, altitude, dust, shock, high temperature and low temperature. Dell Latitude E6420

Dell's Latitude line has long been a favorite of businesses large and small because of its strong performance, good pricing, and long battery life. With the new 14-inch Latitude E6420, Dell has added a strong dose of style and durability to this tried and true formula, using a new Tri-Metal design with a durable magnesium frame that's built to stands up to abuse. Inside the E6420 packs a punch, thanks to a second-generation Core i5 processor. Still, the $1,361 price tag for our configuration is a bit steep--even when you factor in that our unit came with a touchscreen. Is this Latitude worth it?The Dell Latitude E6420 has an aesthetic that screams "space age" while still looking right at home in the most conservative corporate boardroom. The gunmetal gray brushed metal aluminum lid, matte chrome sides, and angular shape combine to make the notebook look like some kind of executive space cruiser. Meanwhile, the soft-touch, rubberized deck is as comfy as the inside of a corporate limousine. Add in a matte chrome accent on the bezel, matte chrome hinges, a zinc latch and bold orange stripe around the keyboard, and you have a truly unique design.But the E6420's Tri-Metal chassis is more than just eye candy.

Dell Latitude E6420

Latitude-branded laptops are dedicated to the most demanding businesses and largest enterprises for a reason: They're fully loaded, with a world of options to choose from. For instance, the Dell Latitude E6420 ($1,788 direct), the company's latest 14-inch business laptop, has every feature and component that a power user could possibly dream up, from the full range of Intel Sandy Bridge processors to the gamut of business-oriented features. This particular configuration runs an Intel Core i5-2540M processor, a 9-cell battery (the biggest available), and integrated graphics. Although powerful, the E6420 is pricey and weighs a whopping 6 pounds, which is very heavy for a 14-inch laptop. Frequent travelers, take note. The E6420's heavy weight can be attributed to several factors. There's the huge 9-cell battery without which the E6420 wouldn't have its impressive battery life. Then there's the fact that it's a solidly-made laptop, made from magnesium alloy and topped with an aluminum finish. This metallic blend withstood a wide range of improvised military torture tests by Dell that include vibrations, extreme temperatures, drops, and moisture, to name a few.
