Laptop Reviews: Compare Laptops and Notebooks

At the time of writing, three versions of the Dell Inspiron M101z are available on the Dell UK site. The differences with the version tested here and details of the second and third models are outlined below. The second configuration is therefore likely to be less responsive than the version tested. That said, for office doc and internet use only, it'll be fine. The single core processor version (N00M1Z01) is however likely to offer much less ease-of-use for multitasking - not much better than most current netbooks. Somewhere between a netbook and an ultra-portable laptop, the Dell Inspiron M101z is according to Dell, "". It comes with the AMD Vision platform, with Dell not hesitating to term it "a little marvel"... oh yeah! While the all-glossy fashion seems finally to be changing - we aren't sorry about this one bit - Dell has decided to splash it on all over the place. Hood, screen surround and the keyboard are all in glossy black plastic, which of course picks up dust and fingermarks very quickly. The wrist rest uses much nicer silver plastic and picks up less marks and dust. Although it doesn't go unnoticed, the overall impression is nice.

Dell Inspiron M101z review

Two strange things have happened. The first? The Dell Inspiron M101z is an AMD ultraportable – a hens-teeth rare configuration of teeny tiny processors that could well mark the mainstream resurgence of AMD against Intel's Atom and Celeron processors. It's a decent one at that, as power-friendly as it is powerful. The second strange thing is that it's Dell that is responsible for this new machine – the same Dell which has been accused – by the New York Times, no less – of a severe Intel addiction, given that it has long seemed to use Intel processors above all else. Not that putting out such a laptop doesn't make sense, particularly if AMD's shiny low-power Neo architecture can stand up to the rigours of ultra-portable performance against Intel's Celeron and Atom ranges. This isn't a netbook, of course. No. It's a fully-fledged ultra-portable laptop – albeit a small one without an optical drive – with a titchy screen, and a low power architecture. But not a netbook. No. (Sssh. It is a netbook, just a luxury one. Don't tell Dell.)SpecificationsLet's start with the design. The M101z comes clad in lacquered brushed aluminium, a luxurious 'smudge free' finish that is in fact not smudge free at all.

Dell Inspiron M101z

The $580 Dell Inspiron M101z is just big enough for me to use comfortably (my gigantic hands are like bear paws); and yet at 11.5 by 8.1 by 1.4 inches, it's small enough to slip into most bags. My review unit, accented with a rich blue lid, weighed just 3.4 pounds. The frame felt sturdier than it looked, too, with virtually no flex. The M101z's hinge positions the 11-inch widescreen a little closer to the user than most laptops do, putting it neatly on top of the body of the machine itself. The interior is a clean gray with a black keypad--easy to look at and not too flashy. Both the keyboard and the touchpad were a pleasure to use, with quiet, comfortably spaced Chiclet-style keys that offered smooth responsiveness. The touchpad is great, too--a single neatly placed pad with two distinct and quiet keys beneath it. I rarely enjoy typing for long on an 11-inch keyboard, but the M101z felt great. The frame holds three USB jacks, a VGA output, headphone and microphone jacks, an ethernet port, and an SD card reader. Inside the frame are a lightweight 1.3GHz AMD Athlon II Neo K325 dual-core processor, 4GB of RAM, a 320GB hard drive, 802.11n wireless, and integrated Mobility Radeon HD 4225 graphics.

Dell Inspiron M101z

The dividing line between Netbooks and laptops has long been a fuzzy one, as Intel's Atom CPUs have migrated into 11-inch and even larger systems, while other 10- and 11-inch models have added alternative CPUs, graphics hardware, and high-resolution displays. Dell's new 11-inch entry, the Inspiron M101z, has one foot solidly over that Netbook line, falling somewhere between what we would call a premium Netbook and an ultraportable laptop. The key is the dual-core AMD Neo K325 CPU, which offers a much-improved user experience over the single-core Intel Atom found in most 11-inch Netbooks. This $579 configuration of the M101z also includes 4GB of RAM and a 7200rpm hard drive. At the same time, a single-core version, with AMD's Neo K125, is also available for $449--further confusing the Netbook/laptop issue. The more expensive dual-core version runs like a charm, and is a great experience for anyone beaten down by lumbering Atom-powered Netbooks. Unfortunately, it's also just about as expensive as a standard laptop, and for only a little more you could trade up to an Intel Core i3 system.

Dell Inspiron M101z

Is it or is it not a netbook? That's the question every time a pint-sized, relatively inexpensive laptop pops up in the PCMag Labs. Such is the case with the Dell Inspiron M101z ($580 direct): Its 11-inch chassis and sub-$600 price tag are bordering netbook territory. But beneath its hood, a dual-core AMD Athlon processor, 1080p HD-capable graphics, and 4GB of memory says that this ultraportable should go up against CULV standouts like the Asus UL80Vt-A1 ($823 street, ) and Acer Aspire 1830T-3721 ($700 street, ). The Inspiron line recently took on a new design, featuring a hinge that leaves a lip in the back. It started with the Dell Inspiron 14R ($820 direct, ) and continues with the M101z. The lid can be personalized with up to 200 designs. My review unit features a blue glossy top, embossed with a subtle pattern. It's neither as trendy nor as resistant to fingerprints and smudges as the textured designs found in the Acer 1830T-3721 and Alienware M11x (Core i7) ($1,175 direct, ). The M101z is a very small laptop, tipping the scales at 3.4 pounds. Among 11-inch laptops, it's not the lightest, though: The Acer 1830T-3721 (3 lbs) and Lenovo ThinkPad X100e ($549 direct, ) (3.2 lbs) are lighter.

Dell Inspiron M101z

And the award for most improved ultraportable goes to...Seriously, Dell has done a really nice job revamping the 11-inch member of its Inspiron family, banishing the lackluster touchpad with integrated buttons and slightly cramped keyboard in favor of a design that's much easier to use. And the Inspiron M101z (starting at $449; $579 as configured) is easier on the eyes, too, featuring bold color options and a sleek forward hinge design. When you add in powerful speakers and a dual-core AMD processor with ATI graphics, this 3.4-pound machine runs circles around your typical netbook. But is it the best value in its class? The Inspiron M101z looks like a shrunken version of the 14-inch Inspiron 14R, which is a good thing. It has the same hinge design and a relatively svelte profile that tapers from 1 inch in the front to 1.4 inches in the back. Our review model sports a cool Peacock Blue lid with a paisley-like pattern (Dell calls it Jax). You can also get this pattern in Tomato Red, standard Clear Black, or a Promise Pink version with a DigiPais pattern. On the inside, the M101z has a black glossy bezel surrounding the 11.6-inch display. The lower part of the notebook combines a gunmetal gray plastic deck with a black chiclet-style keyboard.
