We have collected 11 reviews of the Dell Inspiron 17R. Experts rate Dell Inspiron 17R 7.6/10. Reviewsor.com helps you find reviews, best prices, user reviews of the Dell Inspiron 17R and Dell Laptops.
Billed as a high-performance version of the popular Inspiron laptop series and featuring a premium design, Dell's Inspiron 17R Special Edition ($1,099.99 direct) hits the mark on both accounts. The Inspiron 17R's third-generation Intel Core i7 processor, switchable Nvidia graphics solution, and mSATA drive provide formidable horsepower, and the beautiful 17.3-inch full HD display is first rate. However, this media laptop practically screams for a Blu-ray player, and its battery life could be better. With the Inspiron 17R Special Edition, Dell engineers took the chassis used on the Dell Inspiron 17R-5720 ($699 direct, 3.5 stars) (review coming soon) and added some nice touches, including a textured matte black lid and a matching aluminum keyboard deck. Rounded corners and matte silver trim wrapped around the base and lid give the Inspiron 17R Special Edition a sleek, understated look. With dimensions of 1.5 by 16.4 by 10.9 inches (HWD), this 7.4-pound laptop is not very travel friendly, but you'd be hard pressed to find a 17-inch desktop replacement that is. For example, the HP Envy 17 (2012) and Toshiba Qosmio X775-Q7170 weigh 7.5 and 7.4 pounds, respectively.
Desktop replacement laptops, with big 17-inch or larger screens, are less common than they used to be. Even Apple has sunsetted its only 17-inch model. Of the handful that are left, most are high-end systems aimed at gamers or multimedia producers, making a budget 17-inch laptop the rarest of all. Dell's Inspiron line is one of the few to offer a product for those seeking maximum screen for minimum investment. The Inspiron 17R starts at $599, although our $699 review configuration seems like a better overall deal. For an extra $100, you trade up from a second-gen Intel Core i3 CPU to a third-gen Core i5, plus get a larger hard drive. Of course, on a big-screen laptop such as this, it's harder to hide the cost-cutting. A 13-inch laptop with the same CPU could get away with a mostly plastic body and lower screen resolution, but in a desktop replacement, one's expectations of power, performance, and features are simply higher. For example, the very similar-looking Dell Inspiron 17R SE (for Special Edition) offers options including high-end CPUs, discrete graphics, 1080p displays, and backlit keyboards, but starts at $999.
The Inspiron 17R Special Edition is like a Toyota decked out with all the bells and whistles. While its not as sleek as Dell's Lexus-like XPS, this 17-incher does have a lot of power and premium fetaures under the hood. For $1,099, you get a quad-core Ivy Bridge processor, a 2GB Nvidia graphics card for gaming and a matte 1080p display. Plus, the built-in Skullcandy speakers promise to give your favorite tunes and flicks some added oomph.Click to EnlargeMade from anodized aluminum, the Inspiron 17R SE's Stealth Black lid panel is awesome to look at and touch. The panel has a slightly raised honeycomb pattern that adds a nice level of depth and texture. However, all that gratuitous groping left a lot of smudges. The trademark chrome Dell logo sits in the middle and the entire panel is surrounded by a thick gray plastic border. Those who prefer a bit of variety can purchase additional SWITCH lids, which start at $29.99 each. Removing the panel is as easy as sliding the chrome gray switch at the bottom of the lid to right and popping off the panel. We did experience some trouble snapping the lid back into position, however.Click to EnlargeThe notebook's interior features the same Stealth Black aluminum honeycombed panel as the lid, complete with plastic gray border. The big chrome power button, next to the left hinge, was easy to locate.
My initial thought on seeing this new Dell Inspiron 17R SE pulled from its box for the first time was, "Wow, does anyone still make laptops this big?" It's doubly surprising, as we've talked about the latest generation of Dell Inspiron laptops at some length, usually to point out how thin and attractive they are, at least for budget-minded laptops. The difference is that those systems, typified by the Inspiron 14z, are part of Dell's "z" line, which indicates a thinner body (perhaps related to the z axis in the Cartesian coordinate system). This is the regular full-thickness Inspiron, which Dell has not particularly emphasized of late. There's still a further catch here, however. This is the SE or Special Edition version of the 17R, which means its options include high-end CPUs, discrete graphics, 1080p displays, and backlit keyboards, packed into a chassis that's at least partially aluminum. In this particular case, our review unit includes an Intel Core i7-3610QM CPU, a 1,920x1,080-pixel, 17.3-inch display, 1TB of HDD storage (coupled with a 32GB SSD), and a Nvidia GeForce 650M GPU, for a total of $1,099.
With the Dell Inspiron 17R (I17RN-3530DBK) ($879.99 list at Best Buy) you get solid Core i7 processing power and a nice selection of wireless features in an attractive desktop replacement. In addition to a large 750GB hard drive the 17R offers several high-speed I/O ports and a comfortable keyboard layout. Its 17.3-inch display can't do 1080p, however, and the optical drive can't read Blu-ray discs. DesignThe I17RN-3530DBK's Diamond Black finish is plastic, but looks like brushed aluminum with a glossy coating. Though stylish, it is a magnet for fingerprint smudges. A polished silver Dell logo adorns the center of the lid, which is firmly held in place by the same forward-facing hinges used on previous Inspiron laptops such as the Dell Inspiron 17R-6434DBK ($749.99 list, 3.5 stars). The 7.15-pound chassis measures 1.2 by 16.5 by 11.3 inches (HWD), so road travel will likely be kept to a minimum with this notebook. Still, it's much lighter than the Dell XPS 17 ($1,670 direct, 3.5 stars), which weighs in at a hefty 8.1 pounds. Beneath the shiny lid sits a roomy, full-size chiclet-style keyboard surrounded by a deck that matches the lid and collects just as many, if not more, unsightly smudges.
Dell's Inspiron 17R desktop replacement laptop is a study in clean, simple design. It's also highly configurable and supports many of the latest technologies such as USB 3.0 and Intel's Wireless Display (WiDi). And as you might guess from the 17R designation, a large (17.3-inch), 1600-by-900-pixel display is part of the package. The design aesthetic for the 17R is elegantly minimalist--little in the way of bling breaks up the smooth lines. Our test unit was black with subtle horizontal streaks of dark gray that breathe life into an ordinary hue. If you want color, swappable shells are available. The unit weighs just over 7 pounds--not light, but average for a desktop replacement. The 17R's chiclet-style keyboard is recessed into the deck, with the cursor arrows and the numeric keypad both nicely delineated from the main keys. The feel is a tad soft, but the keyboard is full-size, with no undersized keys or annoying misplacements. The touchpad is nicely adjusted, and the buttons are firm, but not too stiff. Our test unit came with a Core i5-2410M CPU; 6GB of memory; a 5400-rpm, 500GB Seagate hard drive; and an Nvidia GeForce GT 525M GPU.
Can you really get a good big-screen multimedia laptop for under a grand? Yes, and the Dell Inspiron 17R is exhibit A. This 17-inch notebook combines a vibrant 1600 x 900 screen with a second-generation Intel Core i5-2410M CPU, an Nvidia GeForce GT525M graphics card, and a Blu-ray player--all for $899. Not only that, but users can swap out the lid for a color or design of their choosing.Though not as elegant as the Dell XPS 17, the Inspiron 17R is an attractive and well-built laptop with an interesting twist. Our system featured a glossy black plastic lid with a brushed-metal motif and a chrome Dell logo in the center. Don't like the color? A small button near the hinge allows users to detach the lid and switch it out with another of Dell's new SWITCH by Design Studio lids.Currently, only three solid colors are available for the 17R (Fire Red, Lotus Pink, and Peacock Blue) for $34 each, but we expect that there will soon be a greater variety of patterns and designs. While the lids are bright and eye-catching, their glossiness makes them fingerprint magnets. The 16.5 x 11.3 x 1.2-inch laptop weighs in at 7.2 pounds (7.6 pounds with a nine-cell battery). We found it easy to transport the Inspiron 17R from room to room.
The Dell Inspiron 17R (N7110) ($1,039.98 direct) laptop is a 17.3-inch behemoth whose screen alone will delight multitaskers. Its size limits its portability to around the house, and its internal components lend itself to content creators and light gamers. The Intel Wireless Display technology (WiDi) and huge battery that churns out over 7 hours of battery life only adds icing to an already delicious, feature-ridden cake. Also, Dell's Inspiron R-series sports a cool new design that allows you to pop off your old lid and pop on a new one if the old one starts to bore you or gets too dinged up. The basic Inspiron 17R (N7110) sports a black muted design (this option won't cost you any extra), but with Dell's innovative new SWITCH by Design Studio lids (exclusive to the Dell Inspiron R Series), you can change up your lid design for $34.99 more. There are numerous lid options, including Peacock Blue, Fire Red, or Lotus Pink (my personal favorite). To switch your lids, you just press a button on the backside of the lid that allows it to pop off. The laptop is made of plastic, but the interior and exterior has a brushed look to it, giving it a more dynamic design. Being that this is a desktop replacement laptop, its 17.3-inch screen is pretty standard.
The newly designed Inspiron 17R is the latest 17.3-inch desktop-replacement notebook from Dell. Equipped with the Intel Core i3 and i5 processors with Intel GMA HD graphics, this budget-friendly system is aimed at the masses. In this review we take an in-depth look at this new system and see how it performs.BUY the Inspiron 17R Laptop Computer (Intel CORE I3 370M GB/4GB)Dell Home Systems $679.99see all pricing for the Inspiron 17R Laptop Computer (Intel CORE I3 370M GB/4GB)Our Dell Inspiron 17R Build and DesignThe newly redesigned Inspiron 17R offers a much cleaner and sleeker look and feel compared to past models. Similar to the Adamo-series, the layout has a hinge-forward design with the screen positioned just slightly in front of the back edge of the chassis. This has the added benefit of moving the screen closer to the keyboard and bringing the action to you. The outside appearance of the new 17R is very stylish, with a faux-brushed metal screen cover. The look gives the appearance of metal, although with an easier to clean painted surface. This look it also shared inside the notebook, with the palmrest and keyboard trim. Build quality is great with a strong chassis and very durable feeling plastic.
Dell's Inspiron range has long been one of the better consumer lines we've seen, offering a string of high-quality machines at low prices. The Inspiron 17R is its latest big-screen media centre and, despite its poor battery life, is an impressive laptop for the price. With its 17.3-inch screen, this is a machine built for desktop use. At 3.2kg you won't want to carry it far and its 165-minute battery life is quite poor. This drops to just 118 minutes when watching a DVD – barely enough time to finish most movies. The stylish chassis will look great on your desk. The plastic lid and interior use a faux brushed-aluminium finish to create a high-quality look. Build quality is equally pleasing with all panels feeling firmly fixed and suitably resilient throughout, making it ideal for family use. Excellent usability The user interface ably continues this quality with the spacious and responsive keyboard being a pleasure to work with. All keys respond quietly and accurately, while the numeric keypad allows fast data entry. The stand-out feature of this laptop, however, is its glorious 1600x900 pixel resolution 17.3-inch screen. The 16:9 aspect ratio is perfect for watching widescreen movies, while its stunning brightness and colours bring images to vivid life.
As far as features go, the Dell Inspiron 17R-2211OBK ($799.98 list) is decidedly average for a 17.3-inch laptops. But dig just below the surface and you'll find above-average performance for this desktop replacement. Currently available at Staples, the 17R-2211OBK provides the standard features you'll find in any number of 17.3-inch laptops, but where it excels is in performance. Other than that, there's not much that makes the 17R-2211OBK standout from the competition. As long as performance isn't your top priority, you can find more feature-rich laptops for not much more than what the 17R-2211OBK sells for. The 17R-2211OBK is part of Dell's Inspiron 7 series of 17.3-inch desktop replacement and multimedia laptops. It's big brother to the Inspiron 15R series of 15.6-inch mainstream laptops, such as the Dell Inspiron iM501R-13230BK ($599.99 list, ). They share a similar glossy, metallic lid, which is a fingerprint magnet. The 17R-2211OBK's glossy, silver keyboard deck is much more resistant to smudges. When the lid is closed, the 17R-2211OBK's chassis has an appealing profile. The front edge tapers back from top to bottom, and the back-end of the laptop sticks out about a third-of-an-inch past the lid's hinge.
