Dell Inspiron 15R (I15RN-5882DBK)

Available at Best Buy for $649.99 (list), the Dell Inspiron 15R (I15RN-5882DBK) is a perfectly reasonable choice for a budget laptop. It's not packed to the gills with performance-enhancing components, but what it has is enough to keep it consistently at the upper end of the power spectrum. If you need something stronger, but not too much more expensive, you can find it. But this machine is a fine basic choice for anyone looking for a 15-inch laptop that doesn't put up (or cause) too much fuss. DesignThe I15RN-5882DBK maintains the standard Dell look, with a glossy lid attractively decorated to resemble brushed metal; Dell calls the lid color Diamond Black, we call it handsome. A silver Dell logo smack dab in the middle is the only other design element on the lid. The color scheme extends to the inside of the laptop as well, with the palm rest, keyboard deck, and bezel around the 15.6-inch glossy widescreen 1,366-by-768 display (a webcam is located in the center of the top edge) all black as well. The chiclet-style keyboard uses slightly scalloped keys that offer good travel and should provide sufficient typing room even for those with larger hands.

The new Dell Inspiron 15R (N5110) is the company’s attempt to reinvigorate its value-for-money consumer laptop offering. The new 15-inch Inspiron 15R sports the latest Sandy Bridge Intel Core i3-2310M processor and Nvidia GeForce GT 525M graphics with Optimus automatic graphics switching feature. The notebook also introduces a couple of new features to Dell’s Inspiron line, but does it still offer great value for customers? We try and explore... The Dell Inspiron 15R (N5110) isn’t drastically different looking in terms of design compared to the previous generation of Dell Inspiron 15R. The laptop has a similar protruding hinge on its back like the Dell Vostro V13 and Vostro V130 laptops. The previous Inspiron 14R and 15R laptops sported a glossy screen lid, but where the new Inspiron 15R differs is it allows you to change its screen lid with a variety of options Dell sells on its website. As a rule, Dell provides an extra glossy screen lid with every new Dell Inspiron 15R you purchase. We recommend buying a non-dark colour as dark colours with glossy surfaces attract a lot of fingerprint smudges. When it comes to switching the lids, the process is extremely easy and the lids fit and align onto the screen’s back panel elegantly.

The 15.6 inch model in the Dell Inspiron R range, the 15R, runs on a 2nd generation Core i. This machine, with customisable hood, has been designed for those looking to process office documents comfortably without having to lose time looking for a power socket. While Dell has used matte and glossy plastics rather than aluminium for the shell, the 15R's finish doesn't suffer as a result. There's little or no give in the chassis, hood or keyboard and no play between the various elements - except of course with the DVD rewriter. Overall, it's a well made machine. You can choose the colour of the hood from a range on the Dell site. The default is black, but for an extra £30 you can choose between red and blue and for an extra £40 you can choose from more than twenty exotic designs. keyboard and the number pad use the chiclet (separated keys) design. They're well proportioned and well positioned. This makes for instinctive, accurate keying but there is a rather dull keying sound, which can be disturbing. We were however delighted to find the 15R equipped with a large multitouch touchpad. Thanks to its size, you can move the cursor right across the screen in one sweep. The glide is nice and the cursor movement precise.

Dell Inspiron 15R (2nd generation)

When it comes to spending $500 on a laptop, beggars can't be choosers. One of the best things about the Inspiron 15R, Dell's 2011 update to its budget and midrange consumer laptop line, is that it starts at an aggressive price while still offering Intel's second-generation Core i-series processors. At $499, the new Inspiron 15R includes a Core i3 Sandy Bridge processor, along with a couple of USB 3.0 ports and Bluetooth, making it one of the better deals around. The tricky thing about the Dell Inspiron 15R is upgrading it: depending on what options you choose, as with many Dell laptops, the price can easily soar up to $1,000 or more. Our review configuration of the 15R cost about $709, and comes with a Core i5 processor, 6GB of RAM, and a 500GB hard drive, along with an extended 2-year warranty. That's a reasonable price, but you might want to pick your configurations carefully, and consider other alternatives. Up at the near-$1,000 range there are plenty of attractive options from other manufacturers, and there's also Dell's own XPS 15z. The 2011 Inspiron R comes with an HD Webcam and second-generation Intel Core i-series CPUs, and optional multicolored and patterned back lids are available for $35 to $60 a pop.

Dell Inspiron 15R review

Dell's Inspiron range is made up of the company's entry-level consumer laptops.In the past the series has played second-fiddle to its more illustrious brothers, the Dell Studio and Studio XPS ranges, which have tended to feature snazzier designs and meatier specifications for those after the next level of not only style and sophistication, but also power, usability and performance. The new Inspiron 15RBut all that has now changed as the refreshed Inspiron 15R comes out fighting. Not only has a brand new chassis design been implemented, but a whole raft of powerful components – including an Intel Core i5 processor – makes this a very powerful laptop whether you're simply after everyday use, or looking to run more resource intensive multimedia programs such as Adobe Photoshop. The thing you notice out of the box is the brand new chassis design, making the Dell 15R the most desirable Inspiron to date. Gone is the stolid black box design that used to plague Dell's lower-priced machines, and instead a shiny red lid with a gunmetal finish is complemented by a fake brushed aluminium chassis design. Impressively, unlike many shiny laptops, the Inspiron 15R doesn't collect dust and fingerprints too quickly, and the odd wipe with a cloth maintains its smart look.

The newly designed Inspiron 15R is the latest 15.6-inch desktop-replacement notebook from Dell. Equipped with the Intel Core i3 or i5 processors and Intel GMA HD graphics, this budget-friendly system is aimed at the masses. In this review we take an in-depth look at this new system and see how it performs.Our Dell Inspiron 15R (N7010) Specifications: Build and DesignThe newly redesigned Inspiron 15R offers a much cleaner and sleeker look and feel compared to past models. Similar to the Adamo-series, the layout has a hinge-forward design with the screen positioned just slightly in front of the back edge of the chassis. This has the added benefit of moving the screen closer to the keyboard and bringing the action to you. The outside appearance of the new 15R is very stylish, with a faux-brushed metal screen cover. The look gives the appearance of metal, although with an easier to clean painted surface. This look it also shared inside the notebook, with the palmrest and keyboard trim. Build quality is great with a strong chassis and very durable feeling plastic. Even with its large footprint, the thin chassis resist flex and doesn't creak when you lift it up from the corners.
