You can't always expect a highly distinctive laptop for a bargain price, and that's certainly true in the case of the Dell Inspiron 14R (I14RN-1364PBL) ($649.99 at Best Buy). This is a laptop that, from features to performance to battery life, is a solid middle-of-the-pack selection: You won't be disappointed with what you get, but you won't be wowed, either. If all you need is a straightforward system for doing straightforward things, the I14RN-1364PBL will get the job done—merely without a lot of extra flair and individuality along the way. DesignThe glossy lid of the I14RN-1364PBL is decorated with a brushed-metal design, and colored in Dell's relatively reserved Peacock Blue hue, with a silvery Dell logo positioned dead center providing the only additional adornment. The lid is the flashiest about this laptop, which is otherwise basic black all the way. The metal motif carries over onto the inside of the laptop for the palm rest, though the area between slightly scalloped keys in the chiclet-style keyboard is glossy plastic as well. The keys are not backlit, but a few—the power button, the Caps Lock key, and three in the upper-right corner for opening the Windows Mobility Center and the Dell Support Center, and switching to an external display—glow a bright white when pressed.
Just how powerful should a sub-$500 notebook be? Priced at $499, the 14-inch Dell Inspiron 14R includes a last-generation Intel Pentium processor, HDMI output, a 250GB, 5400-rpm hard drive, 2GB of RAM, and a modish, chrome-trimmed chassis. While it won't break any speed records, this version of the 14R has enough muscle for most everyday tasks. But is this machine the best choice for those on a budget? The Dell Inspiron 14R has a modern look designed to appeal to a wide spectrum of users. It has a standard glossy lid and display bezel, as well as chrome-colored plastic surrounding the palm rest. Our review unit came in fingerprint-prone Mars Black, but other options include Peacock Blue, Promise Pink, and Tomato Red (all for $45 more). The 14R's edges are all curved and its surfaces polished. The only exception is the plastic bottom that looks just as fashionable despite its rough matte finish. The Inspiron 14R also sports Dell's signature forward hinge, which means the display meets the deck before the back edge of the system, leaving a small ledge of space behind the screen. Measuring 13.5 x9.7 x 1.3 inches and weighing 4.8 pounds, this notebook was noticeable in our backpack, but not too heavy.
Just in time for the back-to-school season, Dell has released its new R series of Inspiron all-purpose laptops. Though the stylish silver accents are the first thing you'll notice, the Inspiron R series is more than just a cosmetic upgrade. The Inspiron 14R may have fewer configuration options than the Inspiron 14 and may carry a higher starting price, but its improved hardware and refined design more than make up for the difference. You can get an Inspiron R laptop in any of four colors: Mars Black, Peacock Blue, Tomato Red, or Promise Pink. Anything other than black, however, will cost you an extra $40. The cheapest Inspiron 14R is $479 (as of July 14, 2010), just $30 more than the least expensive Inspiron 14, but that particular model includes a 1.86GHz Pentium 6000. The real reason to select an R model is to obtain a Core i3 or i5 processor, which you can't get in a regular Inspiron 14. Selecting such a processor bumps the minimum price up to $649, but it means a substantially faster CPU and better Intel integrated graphics. Our test machine, which cost $779 at the time of this review, came with a Core i3-350M processor (2.26GHz, two cores, and four threads), 4GB of DDR3 RAM, and an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5470 with 1GB of graphics RAM.
Customizing your own laptop without too many restrictions is something that we often take for granted. The Dell Inspiron 14R ($820 direct), for instance, is affordable and flexible when it comes to customizing parts and features. It also features a new hinge design and color options, and moved some ports to the back. This particular model will appeal to 3D gamers and hardcore content creators, as the ATI graphics card excels in these tasks. For those who don't fit this description, you'll get much better battery life with the 14R-1898MRB ($750 list, ) and the 14R-1761MRB ($750 list, ) - near identical laptops that use an integrated graphics chip (Intel). The 14R's plastics are painted to look like brushed aluminum, and while attractive, laptops like the Asus U30Jc-1A ($899 street, ) and HP Pavilion dm4 ($905 direct, ) actually use metals on their lids. Dell moved up the hinge, creating a lip in the back of the system, which was an idea taken from the Dell Adamo ($2,000 direct, ) and Mini Inspiron 10s ($425 direct, ). This allows the 14-inch display to open deeper than its predecessor - the Dell Inspiron 1464 ($670 direct, ). The palm rest and keyboard area mimics the exterior.
Dell’s update to its venerable Inspiron line has a new look and plenty of power. Aimed at the back-to-school crowd, the 14-inch Inspiron 14R includes hardware features and software meant to appeal to students (and their parents). This $819 configuration also includes ATI graphics, so users can game on the side at an affordable price. However, while this machine is a strong performer, it sacrifices battery life. The Inspiron 14R looks modern. Though its surfaces are made of plastic, the internal chassis is made of magnesium alloy, which gives the notebook a sturdy frame, but also results in a 5-pound system that’s a bit heavier than the 14-inch competition. For example, the Lenovo IdeaPad V460 weighs 4.8 pounds, and the HP Pavilion dm4 weighs just 4.4 pounds. Still, the 13.5 x 9.7 x 1.3-inch system looks fairly sleek, complete with rounded edges and tapered sides. Dell’s hinge-forward design, similar to that of its updated Inspiron Mini netbooks, makes the back bulkier but allows for extra battery space. The glossy lid shows off the notebook’s color—a metallic Peacock Blue, a $40 premium—but collects fingerprints like a crime scene (other colors aside from the standard black are Tomato Red and Promise Pink).
