The Alienware brand and PC gaming are synonymous, and with good reason. For the past 15 years the folks at Alienware have been churning out high-end gaming systems, and thankfully they continue to so. Its flagship laptop rig, the M18x ($4,529 direct), is packed with over-the-top components and presented in a sharp-looking chassis complete with tricked-out lighting effects and a killer 18.4-inch display. You'll pay more at the pump for this high-octane notebook and you don't get a lot of battery life, but for gamers seeking LAN party dominance it's an easy decision: The M18x eclipses last year's Alienware M17x as our Editors' Choice among cost-no-object (over $3,000) gaming laptops. When we reviewed the M17x last June, we were wowed by the laptop's overall design and rubber-like matte finish. This time around the Alienware design team decided to shroud the M18x in an anodized aluminum housing with a Space Black finish that is actually more of a metallic dark gray than black. The familiar illuminated alien head adorns the lid, while the front of the base sports two ominous-looking backlit grilles. The front end has a Corvette-like shape that makes the notebook look fast standing still.
There's no question that the Alienware M18x is one of the fastest, best-looking gaming notebooks on the market. But users considering this high-end system must choose between configurations with Nvidia and AMD graphics chips. When we reviewed the dual Nvidia GeForce GTX580M-powered M18x back in August, we lauded that notebook's face-melting graphics, beautiful 18-inch screen, and convenient Wireless HD video output. So how does a $4,566 model of the Alienware M18x that features dual AMD Radeon HD 6990M graphics cards and a 4-GHz Core i7 CPU compare to its Nvidia-based brother? The Alienware M18x is both massive and impressive. While not as flashy as the Nebula Red lid, the Space Black matte anodized aluminum chassis--combined with large vents and backlit front grilles--gives the notebook a Close Encounters kind of vibe. The smudge- and fingerprint-resistant lid is adorned with a shiny backlit Alienware logo. Toward the bottom of the lid is a ribbed rubber panel that makes for an interesting contrast.Opening the notebook reveals a silky black matte finish surrounding a black matte brushed-aluminum keyboard deck.
Big, bad and unapologetic. These three words accurately describe the Alienware M18x. Unapologetic about its size, this is a desktop replacement notebook that almost defies the entire category of portable machines. Sure, it's portable, in the sense that you can move it from room to room or perhaps pack it up for a LAN, but you're not tossing this bad boy into a dainty backpack or laptop tote. No, the Alienware M18x steps into the ring weighing in at nearly 12lbs (11.935) and thumbs its nose at would-be competitors. Though mobile components are humming along inside its rugged metal frame, Dell's Alienware division gives gamers and performance enthusiasts the choice to configure a machine with fastest technologies money can buy currently in notebooks. To that end, in our efforts to evaluate Alienware's new gaming Goliath, the company decided to send us two machines. We hemmed and hawed; with all that gaming prowess at our fingertips, how would we get any real work done? Such is the perilous line we walk some days in the lab.
The latest release from Dell-owned Alienware, the M18X, is a behemoth with enough power to run any game under the sun without so much as a flicker. But you'll have to have deep pockets to get your hands on one. Even getting the M18X out of the box is a challenge, thanks to its 438 x 311 x 52mm dimensions and a back-breaking weight of 5.7kg. This machine was designed to dominate your desk. As expected, it sticks to the Alienware design, which we love, but probably won't be to everyone's taste. The entire machine is a slab of moulded rubber and brushed metal, and that ever-present Tron-style neon backlight. Unsurprisingly, the focus of the Alienware is gaming. Our review sample came with an AMD Radeon HD 6900M and scored a mind-blowing 19,056 during our intensive gaming benchmark test. While the sheer power of the machine keeps games running perfectly, it is the 18.4-inch screen that made playing on the M18X a truly immersive experience. The Super-TFT screen is like a window into your games. It's extremely bright and the 1920 x 1080-pixel resolution keeps the most complex graphics razor sharp. But it's the sheer size that is the winner here and you really notice the difference between this and a standard 15.6-inch machine.
Like a Michael Bay movie, it's getting harder and harder for Alienware to top itself. But somehow, it keeps doing it. Case in point: the M18x. Featuring an 18-inch full HD screen, an overclocked Core i7 processor running at 4 GHz, two of Nvidia's most powerful GPUs, and WirelessHD streaming, this gaming rig is hyperbole personified. As you might expect, this gaming monster doesn't come cheap. Our configuration costs a whopping $5,552. So do the special effects justify the cost of admission?Everything about the M18x is huge. The notebook has a similar design to the M17x; it's just bigger. The aluminum lid (ours came in Nebula Red; black is also available) is adorned with a chrome Alienware logo in the center and a rubber panel at the bottom. A black soft-touch finish on the deck resists fingerprints. The front retains the distinctive backlit grilles on either end, which are all the more intimidating on this system. The red extends around the sides of the notebook, and massive vents run along the entire back of the machine, not unlike those on the ASUS G74SX-A2.Where the M17x was a relatively trim 16 x 11.9 x 1.8 inches and 9.6 pounds, the M18x weighs a whopping 13 pounds and measures 17.2 x 12.7 x 2.1 inches.
