The Alienware M14xr3 ($2,002.99 direct), as indicated by its 1.49inch thick chassis and 6.38-pound weight, packs a roster of powerful parts that are rarely seen in a 14-inch laptop. It's filled to the brim with wireless features like integrated wireless HD (adapter included), Killer Wireless-N Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth. And its Nvidia GPU and Core i7 processor are powerful enough to take on DirectX 11 games (on medium settings) and run through intensive multimedia tasks. Unfortunately, the amount of heat it emits is enough to qualify it as a mini space heater. Alienware laptops are made for gamers, which means the design has a "bling" factor. Two red grills glow on the bottom front of the chassis, and the keyboard also glows red (you can change the lighting within the Alienware Command Center). The keys are in the traditional style, rather than the isolated chiclet style that has become so popular among laptop manufacturers. These keys felt soft and springy under my fingers and provided one of the better typing experiences I've encountered on a laptop. The soft rubberized texture integrated into the palm rest - as well as the rest of the laptop - over its magnesium frame provided some traction while typing and adds to its unique design.
Alienware shocked many gaming enthusiasts earlier this year when the company discontinued its popular M15x gaming notebook and replaced it with the slightly smaller M14x. Did Alienware make a good call replacing a 15-inch laptop with a 14-inch laptop? We took an in-depth look at the M14x to find out if it indeed is "The most powerful 14-inch laptop in the universe."Build and DesignLove then or hate them, Alienware notebooks feature one of the best known designs among gaming laptops. The M14x might be a new notebook for 2011 but it incorporates all of the key elements that make the Alienware notebooks unique. Combine a stealth fighter with a H.R. Giger drawing and mix in a generous helping of multi-colored LEDs and you'll get something that starts to look like an Alienware design. The build quality of the M14x is very good with a combination of metal and plastic parts. Most of the exterior contact points (lid, palm rests and keyboard surround) are plastic. Nevertheless, the M14x feels solid ... in no small part due to the unusually thick design. Alienware's designers make no apologies for the roughly 1.5-inch thickness of this laptop; this gaming PC needed to take up less space in a bedroom or dorm room.
The new Alienware M14x replaces the Alienware M15x for high-end enthusiast gamers looking for a slightly more portable gaming laptop that continues to deliver uncompromising performance. Sitting between the M11x and M17x, the Alienware M14x is a 14-inch gaming laptop with a widescreen form factor and enough firepower within to bring the latest and greatest games down to their knees. Let's take a closer look at the Alienware M14x gaming laptop. The Alienware M14x sports a unique style and design which if famously synonymous with Alienware machines, be it laptop or desktops. The 14-inch, widescreen laptop's chassis is made of magnesium alloy and the laptop looks and feels rigidly built with metal almost everywhere (except the glossy screen). But the laptop's slightly curved spine restricts the screen and chassis' central hinge to a small section near the centre, giving the screen a slightly flimsy air. Nonetheless, the M14x's thick, brawny profile with angular edges adds to the premium appeal of the laptop. With an 8-cell in-built battery, the laptop weighs just about 3 kg -- heavier than most 14-inch laptops -- and it doesn't win any awards for being slim and trim.
The Alienware M18x may be a humongous beast with a huge price tag, but those who prefer a more portable gaming machine or are on a tighter budget should consider the M14x instead. At first glance, the M14x looks like a shrunken version of the M18x. The design is very similar, from the curved lip of the chassis to the glowing headlights. You'll either love it or hate it, and we definitely love it. The reduced body size means the keyboard has been cropped, but the bevelled keys are still perfectly sized for playing your favourite games. The numeric keypad has been ditched, as have the media controls that sat over the M18x's keyboard. However, this board is firmer than the M18x's and is just as great for typing out essays as it is for blasting your way through an action game. We also like the subtle blue glow that lights the keys at night. Despite being a lot slimmer than the M18x, this laptop still packs in plenty of power. One of Intel's latest and most powerful Core i7 processors scored one of our best benchmark results, while the dedicated Nvidia graphics card will keep you gaming for the foreseeable future.
There's something about the allure of a gaming notebook. Even mainstream users, not necessarily hellbent on frame rates and decked-out designs, can relate to a powerful notebook with striking good looks. It's no wonder that products like Asus' G73 series of notebooks and Alienware's M series, have been some of the most viewed pages of our mobile computing section here at HotHardware.com. Similarly, Dell's recent announcement that they were expanding the Alienware M series line, to flesh out 14-inch and 18-inch versions, was met with a fair bit of buzz as well. The 14" model especially caught our eye, striking a nice size and weight compromise between the soon to arrive 18" behemoth and the rather svelte M11x we looked at not long ago. So, of course we reached out to Dell for a review unit and Dell was good enough to respond in short order with their new middleweight contender. The Dell Aienware M14x is a 14-inch notebook designed in typical Alienware fashion, with rugged, impeccable build quality, adorned in custom lighting with a striking design that's driven by the latest CPU and GPU technologies from Intel and NVIDIA. Here's the spec sheet rundown for our eval unit...
After creating the world's smallest gaming laptop with the M11x and one of the most powerful with the M17x, Alienware has decided to split the difference with its new 14-inch M14x. Like its larger and smaller siblings, this notebook has many of the features Alienware is known for--powerful graphics, snazzy design, a multicolored backlit keyboard, and neat extras such as built-in Wireless HD. But is this rig worth its seriously high price of $2,198?The M14x follows the same pattern as all other Alienware notebooks; the lid has a ridged design with the Alienware logo in the middle, and the front edge is angled outward, with two backlit honeycomb "eyes" on either side. New, however, are dark chrome accents above each eye that almost give the impression of eyebrows; combined with the softer angles, the front of the M14x looks less like a Camaro than an alien. The lid, sides, and deck are all covered in a soft material that's pleasing to the touch; we wish more laptops had this treatment. The exterior of our review unit was Nebula Red, but consumers can opt for a Stealth Black finish.
Typically, the difference between a 14-inch laptop and a 15-inch one is very slight, although we generally prefer the smaller of these two options for the sake of portability. When it comes to chunky gaming laptops, however, the difference can be more pronounced. While we wouldn't consider taking Alienware's 15-inch M15x laptop on the road, the new 14-inch version, unsurprisingly named the M14x, looks and feels a good deal smaller--even if it's still a beast compared with other 14-inch laptops. For truly portable gaming, you'd want to stick with the popular 11-inch M11x, pretty much the only gaming ultraportable you'll find. But this new in-between size is enticing for those who want to take their games on a family vacation or business trip and still enjoy a reasonable screen size and generous 1,600x900-pixel screen resolution. All this doesn't come cheap, and our review unit of the M14x costs $2,198, which includes a high-end Intel Core i7 2820QM CPU, an Nvidia GeForce GT555M GPU, 8GB of RAM, and a 750GB hard drive. Fortunately, more realistic configurations start at $1,199. It's been a few years since Dell gave its Alienware lineup a makeover, and it's starting to show. Like the recent M11x, the new M14x has the same angular, almost automotive design as the 15- and 17-inch models of a few years ago.
