Corsair really surprised us when they entered the case market with the Obsidian Series 800D full tower case. The 800D was just awesome and probably one of the best cases I have reviewed in the past 3 years. They next went to the Graphite Series with the 600T, this case was equally impressive. Today we are taking a look at the first mid tower case in the Obidian Series, the 650D. The case has many of the same features we loved on on the 800D, but also adds some from the Graphite Series line of cases as well. Is this the perfect mid tower for you? Read on to find out! The Obsidian Series 600D case comes in a pretty plain cardboard box. On the front there is a picture of the case. On the back you have an overview of all the parts of the case. Opening the box up inside you will find the case nicely protected by 2 large pieces of styrofoam and a cloth bag. When you take the cloth bag off the windows and front panel have plastic on them to prevent scratching during transport. Once you get a good look at the 650D you can see it looks very similar to the 800D. The sleek, but simple styling gives it a very clean look. The case only comes in black and is make of mostly steel with a brushed aluminum front bezel.
We don’t like to make recommendations right off the bat—part of the fun of reading these reviews (we’d imagine) comes from the buildup (ha!). But the Corsair 650D blew us away in pretty much every category. For the 650D, Corsair took the guts of its 600T mid-tower chassis and married them with the looks of its Obsidian-series full-towers, a move customers (and we) have been requesting for years. The steel chassis features a very pretty brushed-aluminum front panel with a removable mesh fan filter and a push-down rectangular panel giving you quick access to three USB 2.0 and two USB 3.0 ports, as well as the two standard audio jacks. The chassis, which is painted matte black throughout, comes stock with one 20cm top fan, a 20cm front fan, and a 14cm exhaust fan—though you aren’t confined to that particular fan setup, as there are mounting holes up top for two 12cm or 14cm fans, or a 240mm radiator if liquid-cooling is your cup of tea (or liquid nitro, whatever). Also up top: a sliding panel revealing a drop-down SATA dock. The 650D, like its spiritual antecedents the 800D and 700D, seems to go out of its way to remind you that simple is better. The four optical drive bays and the six 3.5-inch drive trays are toolless, and both three-tray hard drive bays are removable.
When I think of the Corsair Obsidian series, I am reminded of the massive full towers like the 700D and 800D that are immensely clean and perfect for watercooling, housing multiple video card setups, gigantic power supplies, and large hard drive arrays. Until recently, I was only aware that the Obsidian series cases were available in full towers and I was proven wrong when I learned about the Corsair Obsidian 650D. The Obsidian 650D is technically a mid tower, offering just about all the features you can expect out of a full tower — only sacrificing a little room. The Obsidian series has been wildly popular with the super high-end system builders and gamers with deep pockets as they certainly aren't cheap, but arguably some of the best cases that a couple hundred dollars can buy. The Obsidian series offers a feature-rich background, including integrated fan controllers, optional windows, hot swappable drives, brilliant cable routing systems, dust filters, and more. The Corsair Obsidian 650D will be the first case from Corsair that I have had the fortune to evaluate. I am expecting an easy installation, good airflow, rigid construction, and thoughtful engineering on the packaged features, as well as more abstract ones, such as wire management and interchangeability of parts.
As hardware reviewers, it's our job to remain impartial about the products that we look at - but that doesn't mean we can't get friggin' excited! This is Techgage's resident case freak, about to have a look at the long-awaited Corsair Obsidian 650D mid-tower. I have been nearly rabid about this case since I saw the first pictures at this year's CES in Las Vegas. The 650D is modeled after the Obsidian 800D and 700D, but is in a much smaller package supporting ATX and mATX motherboards. The outer styling is quite subdued compared to many cases on the market today, but on the inside it offers many features that made the larger versions so popular - without taking up extra real estate. It's time to dive in and have look to see if the 650D can keep up with its bigger brothers. The case comes wrapped in a cloth bag to help protect an impeccable finish. Even though the 650D body is made of steel, the front panel is aluminum and has a brushed finish. Making up the bottom half of the front panel is a large vent that hides a 200mm fan. The entire vent, which features an air filter, can be removed by pushing in at the top and lifting it away. Towards the bottom of the vents is a nice shiny Corsair logo, just in case you forget which company makes the case.
