Corsair has long been a major player in the computer memory arena, producing award winning memory products for casual users and maximum-effort performance users alike. Not content to rest on their laurels, Corsair branched out into the power supply market with some of the finest PSUs on the market. The next logical step was to enter the cooler and chassis market, which Corsair did with similar results. Last year, we got the opportunity to review Corsair's H50 all-in-one CPU liquid cooling solution (see the review ,) and were very impressed. This time out we get to check out its big brother, the H70. With two fans, a bigger radiator and a redesigned pump/block unit, the H70 promises increased performance and a bit more friendly installation routine. Follow along as we take a closer look at the H70 and see what's new. Corsair has been a leader in the design and manufacture of high-speed modules since 1994. Our focus has always been on supporting the special demands of mission-critical servers and high-end workstations, as well as the performance demands of extreme gamers.
Over the years, I have had the chance to test nearly every form of available cooling available on the retail market. The products have come in all shapes and sizes and I have even had the chance to test some of more elaborate coolers like CoolIT's Freezone and the Cooler Master's V10. It has been quite an adventure to say the least, and the road did take many unexpected turns. Heat pipe technology has also made major strides during the last five years as well. Companies such as Noctua and Thermalright put all their eggs in that basket and brought us some of the best air cooling devices conjured up by their R&D gurus. Nowadays it is almost unheard of for any air cooling device to not contain some form of the venerable heat pipe and no one can deny that is a very good thing for us all. I have managed some stellar over clocks with these beasts of burden over the years and I can fondly look back at the fun I had pushing my hardware to the limits (and then some) in pursuit of that ever elusive record benchmarking score. No trip down my memory lane would be complete without also looking back at the many custom water cooling systems I built.
As the heat of the summer season begins to die down, we are drawn to the topic of cooling like moths to a bug light. While the lucky few (like me) have a finished basement to house all my PC gear so that it lives in a luxurious 68°F paradise year round, most people are forced to sweat right along with their PC. One thing is for certain, that the diehard enthusiast does not want to scale back their overclock one single MHz no matter the cost to their comfort level. So, it is more important than ever to find the best possible cooler available. Air cooling has long held the crown of the best bang for the buck and it's been for a very good reason. Early all-in-one water cooling kits were hardly able to handle a single core stock speed processor, never mind an overclocked one. Custom built water cooling has long been more efficient but at a far greater cost and at an even higher danger level. Let's face it, there is just no way anyone in their right mind is going to spend $100+ on a pre-built water cooling device that cannot compete with an air cooling heat sink for the price.
A cooling solution that brings temperatures down on your high-dollar CPU is a good thing! We all know that the stock CPU cooling solutions as supplied by the manufacturers are what could be called adequate (at best). Most people have no inkling of the high temperatures delivered by the stock cooling solution in that cramped OEM-style case (with just a single exhaust fan to remove the harmful heat from your case). For the vast majority of computer owners, the CPU toils away under all that added heat until one day the inevitable happens. The computer just won't work. That of course will not do for anyone and especially will not do for the enthusiast who is looking for longer life and cooler operating temperatures. You can always go big with some of the massive air cooling solutions but, moderate the size, scope and costs a bit and you can get a decent mid-range cooling solution. However, anything more ambitious than air cooling is usually reserved for the adventurous. Water or liquid cooling has always been for the more adventurous of us since liquids and electricity rarely make good bedfellows.
Back in September 2009, we reviewed Corsair’s H50 all-in-one liquid cooler and awarded it a 9 verdict and a Kick Ass award for its cooling prowess, which put it roughly on par with our then-champion air cooler, the Thermalright U-120 Extreme. But times change and the competition eventually caught up. Corsair apparently hasn’t been asleep, though. The company’s new H70 ups the ante in all-in-one liquid coolers. The Corsair H70, like the H50 before it, was designed in conjunction with Asetek, the all-in-one liquid-cooling OEM. For the H70, the team nearly doubled the thickness of the 12cm radiator, added a second 12cm fan for the coveted push/pull airflow, and slimmed down the pump/heat-exchange unit that rests on the CPU. The H70 also shipped with a pair of voltage-regulator cables, one for each fan, in an effort to reduce noise. Like others of its ilk, the H70’s fans and radiator mount in place of your case’s 12cm rear exhaust fan, although Corsair recommends you mount the H70’s fans as exhaust rather than intake (as with the H50). Alongside the H70 (with and without the regulator cables), we tested the H50 in single-fan mode, the Hyper 212+, and of course, the stock air-cooler that came with our new test bed’s CPU.
