Cooler Master, as a company, really needs no introduction. They've been a part of the PC aftermarket virtually from the start, and their products often feature bold styling elements to go along with excellent performance. Cooler Master's newest foray into the CPU cooling field is no exception. Called the V6 GT, it is another in the automotive themed maximum effort coolers aimed at taming high TDP processors, and represents a step up from their standard V6 (see the Tweaknews review .) With an extra fan, nickel plating and some added visual bling, the V6 GT ups the ante in a couple of respects. Let's have a look under the hood, kick the tires and put the V6 GT through its paces. I think you'll like what you see. Cooler Master was founded with the mission of providing the industry's best thermal solutions. Since its establishment a decade ago, the company has remained faithful to this mission, emerging as a world leader in products and services for companies dealing with devices where heat issues must be resolved. In pursuing this mission, Cooler Master is absolutely committed to delivering solutions that precisely meet customer requirements for features, performance, and quality.
The use of acronyms in retail products is nothing new. There are a wide array of products that use passing references to automobiles as this conjures up the feeling of power, control and freedom. It is no surprise that the PC world is full of this type of advertising. It is not hard to understand why, either. When you look at your computer, you can see that it does consist of an engine (CPU), case (chassis), memory (ECU) and motherboard (power train) as well as the rest of the peripherals that can easily be given automotive attributes. Since the processor can be related as the engine, it doesn't take much poetic license to look upon the heat sink as an automotive appliance. Cooler Master has already had two successful coolers based upon this theme, the V8 and V10. Both coolers worked well and yet, as always, we were left wanting for more. Not to disappoint, the V6 GT was unleashed just a short time ago. In my mind, air cooling has somewhat stagnated as of late. There are so few ways to design something that is going to outperform a previous product or a competitor's offering. We've seen all sorts of designs with all different shapes and sizes and most filled their niche just fine.
Cooler Master's V6 is named after the 'V' pattern of its six heat pipes, and follows on from the well-received V8 and V10 models. The arrangement is supposed to help spread the heat about better than other designs where the heat pipes are in a neat row, and Cooler Master has the thermal images to prove it. The V6 boasts of having over 200W of cooling power, which should be enough for even the most enthusiastic system builder. The automotive theme is carried over to the overall look and, like a modern car engine, all you get to look at are plastic shrouds. The set of densely-packed asymmetric aluminium fins sits in a fan sandwich of two 12cm PWN fans, all covered by a clip-on plastic covers. The copper pipes and heat spreader are nickel-plated. It'll work with all the latest processor standards: Intel LGA772, 1156 and 1366 as well as AMD's AM2, 2+ and 3. To fit it, you mount a backplate and a pair of brackets onto your board and then screw the cooler down onto this using a bar that passes over the top of the spreader. It's a little cumbersome and you'll need access to both sides of your board, but once the brackets are on its easy to take the cooler itself off and on again.
When we first got a glimpse of the V series CPU coolers from Cooler Master we were very impressed. We first got a chance to check out the V8 cooler, then came the V10 cooler and today we have the brand new V6 GT cooler. Once again like the other coolers in the V series it has the engine inspired look and a very unique design. Cooler Master says the V6 GT is the most efficient cooler in the V series thanks to the double-V heatpipes, inclined heatsink array, universal steel pressure mounting and twin DynaLoop dynamic bearing fans. Let’s take a look at the V6 GT and see if it is a real performer. Special thanks to Cooler Master for providing us with the V6 GT CPU Cooler to review. The V6 GT comes in a very colorful and informative retail package. On the front there is a picture of the V6 GT and on the back there is a list of specifications and features. Opening the package up the cooler is nicely protected by a large piece of Styrofoam. Inside you will find the V6 GT cooler, installation hardware, thermal paste and the user’s manual. Just like the previous V series coolers the V6 GT is designed to look much like a car engine. This is very cool and is unique.
