The gaming offshoot of Cooler Master, CM Storm, has been making a bit of a name for itself over the past year in gaming circles. With a range of mice, keyboards, headsets and chassis, we're seeing some great new products. The older, smaller brother of this Trooper case, the Sniper, was a favourite of ours. I've got one encasing my home rig as I type. This Trooper chassis is a proper full size version of the Sniper, but with some serious, modern extras thrown in for good measure. The most intriguing of these features is the fan control system laid into the top panel of the case along with the LEDs, power/reset buttons, and USB 2.0, 3.0 and eSATA ports. There's a fair amount of granularity in the fan speed adjustments, with the buttons allowing for six levels of spinning goodness. Sadly there's no opportunity to set the fan speed levels yourself or have individual fans configured differently, but as a simple solution for a hot day or a toasty LAN party, it gives you some semblance of control. Twist and shout The Trooper's innards offer a little more configuration. The front 3.5-inch drive bays have two 120mm fans, which are side-mounted out of the box.
Our fondness for Cooler Master's full tower computer cases began roughly three years ago when we reviewed the HAF 932. Its stylish, aggressive design was backed by an excellent build quality. The affordable price tag was the icing on the cake for us. At the time, it was easily the ultimate tower case and that opinion remains strong today. The HAF 932 Advanced and HAF X are among the finest full tower chassis money can buy at $150-$200. Cooler Master has also released various cases under its "Storm" banner, a subsidiary tasked with "arming the gaming revolution." Naturally, this duty is fulfilled by developing new keyboards, mice, cases, mouse pads and audio gear for gamers. To date, the brand has released a strong lineup of mid-sized ATX cases, including the Sniper, Scout and Enforcer. We featured the Enforcer in our recent roundup and found it to be an excellent value at only $85. Cooler Master is at it again, releasing yet another gaming-oriented chassis and the first full size model in the Storm lineup. Called the "Trooper," it's priced at $190 -- right alongside the venerable HAF X -- packing several new features: 90-degree rotatable 4-in-3 HDD modules, an easy-to-carry handle, a hidden toolbox to store private goods, a built-in fan controller, an external 2.5" storage drive X-dock and the ability to support up to 14 internal hard drives.
Cooler Master is at it again with another case on the market. After being thrilled with their HAF 932 Black Edition I thought I would never buy another case. However, once I get an up close and personal look at their newest release I might be checking out the market again. The CM Storm Trooper is a full chassis designed with extra space for all your hardware upgrades as well as a durable, built-in handle to lug it from LAN party to LAN party. I personally have a love for full tower designs over the majority of other case form factors. After working with all the extra space, especially the added room for cable management behind the motherboard, going back to a smaller case is hardly worth the lower cost. I'm looking forward to seeing everything the Storm Trooper has to offer, so let's check it out. After a long day of classes I drove home to find a tall box sitting inside the mudroom door. Thankfully, the delivery guy was kind enough to place it out of the rain. Due to the stature of the package I knew it was another case for review, but I took one look at it and was pretty excited to dig into the box. It isn't the ordinary brown box with some black and white drawings that play tricks with your mind while you try to figure out what it actually contains.
Ever since the HAF X was released last year in June, we haven't seen anything too exciting from Cooler Master. The HAF X supported XL-ATX motherboards like the GIGABYTE G1.Assassin or the EVGA Classified, but for extreme enthusiasts, it is a disappointment that there are only a limited number of cases that actually support these motherboards. Users can get modded cases, but that will cost a fortune, so Cooler Master designed a case that is not only very customizable, but also easy to carry around. This is a new addition to Cooler Master's Storm lineup of products, called the Cooler Master Storm Trooper. The CM Storm Trooper is very customizable and user friendly. As we go through the review, we'll explain each of the features, the pros and cons, installation, performance, and much more. Before we jump into the exterior and interior overview of the case, here is a quick video overview that should give an idea on what to expect. Make sure to check out the finished system on page 5 and how the installation process went.
