CoolIt Eco A.L.C.

Back in the prehistoric times (April 2009), we reviewed the Domino A.L.C, an all-in-one liquid CPU-cooling system with three different speeds and an LCD screen. It worked well and was easy to install, but the screen (and attendant fan control) was, in our opinion, poorly thought-out. To see the apparatus, your case needed a side window, and to use it, you’d need to remove your side panel entirely—in which case, why not just use air? But the Domino performed well, so we let it slide. Those features are gone in CoolIT’s new Eco A.L.C. In fact, the Eco bears a strong resemblance to Corsair’s H50 all-in-one that we reviewed in September 2009. Like the Corsair H50, the Eco consists of a heat exchanger and pump that mount directly to the CPU socket, a radiator connected to the pump by a closed cooling loop, and a 12cm fan that connects to the radiator. The radiator and fan replace the rear 12cm or 14cm exhaust fan that’s standard in most ATX cases. The pump is powered by a 3-pin connector attached to any motherboard fan header, while the exhaust fan has a 4-pin PWM connector and attaches to the CPU_FAN header—just like with the H50.

CoolIT ECO A.L.C.

Lately there has been a fad of releasing no maintenance liquid systems. This cooling solution provides better cooling than your standard air cooler, but ditches the hassle of maintaining a liquid loop. While large air coolers can put a lot of stress on your motherboard, the way the A.L.C. is designed it takes this weight away from the motherboard and instead puts it on the rear of the case. This ensures that your motherboard will not break or warp, which is definitely a good thing. The A.L.C. is also extremely versatile. It will fit on the back exhaust vent of just about any mid tower or larger case, and it fits a large variety of different CPU socket types. These include Intel's newest sockets 1156 and 1366 as well as all of the AMD sockets going from 939 to AM3. This will allow you to install the cooler on just about any system that isn't obsolete, and a few that are, but enough talking lets get a closer look at this product. CoolIt went with a pretty plain box design. There are no colors besides the sticker in the top left hand corner. This is fine since we are far more interested in what is inside the box rather than what is on the outside. The outside does tell you some basic information like the sockets this cooler supports.

CoolIT Eco Advanced Liquid Cooling review

CoolIT's Domino ALC represented its most advanced closed-loop water-cooled CPU, but at close to £80 it was quite a pricey bit of kit to be slotting in your machine for a little extra chillin'. The Domino performed impressively, though, allowing extra overclocking headroom while still having the option of being quiet as a dead mouse. The CoolIT Eco ALC version is a stripped-down edition, sporting only one mode and with none of the LED finery that adorned its older brother. But to be honest it was the LED display that bugged me the most about the Domino. It was rather chunky and more often than not simply got in the way of the side of the case. And you could just forget about it if your chassis had a side-mounted fan too. Still, the actual cooling performance meant that we could easily forgive these niggles. The Eco, however, is as simple as it is brilliant. The reservoir is the same size as the Domino's, meaning that it will sit happily on the 120mm fan mounting on the rear of your chassis, and the lack of digital readout means there's little worry of it getting in your way.
