Product Survey: Graphics Cards

Launched mid-October, the Radeon HD 5770s are a less powerful version of the Radeon HD 5800s. They keep the eyecatching DirectX 11 compatibility and moderate power consumption but what about gaming performance? Are they better or worse than the older generation? The Radeon HD 5770 uses a short PCB (printed circuit board, on which the components are soldered) – only 21 cm (8.3"). Yet the stock cooler is a double decker. While it's bulkier, it keeps the card's sound down to a very acceptable level in 2D. At idle, we measured 39.8 dB(A) with the graphics chip at 41°C: the card was barely warm and the fan noise was perceptible but quite unobtrusive. In use, the GPU doesn't get very hot, not going above 84°C, but with noise levels at 56.2 dB(A). So the fan is really noisy during gaming and could disturb the people around you (in a living room, say). The 5770 retains the advances in energy management of the 5800 series. At idle, our wattmeter read 84 W, and it topped out at only 230 W during our intense 3D test. These numbers are for the entire computer, not just the graphics card. Only a single 6-pin PCI-E power connector is needed. The card is meant mostly for owners of monitors with average definition (1680 x 1050).

AMD's Radeon HD 5770 and 5750 graphics cards

Yep, the GPU behind the Radeon HD 5700 series is code-named Juniper, part of the "Evergreen" naming scheme AMD is using for these chips. The big daddy in the family, Cypress, is the chip inside the Radeon HD 5800 series. Juniper is classic example of a chip company firing up its design tools, including the vaunted World's Smallest Chainsaw, and essentially chopping its high-end part in half to serve a broader market. In truth, it's not quite that simple, because Cypress and Juniper were essentially co-developed. The Juniper silicon came back from the fab about a week after Cypress, and AMD had both chips in validation at the same time. If a bug was found on one chip, AMD would then attempt to replicate it on the other one and, if needed, apply a fix to both. That co-development strategy is what allowed the firm to crank out multiple new Radeons in an unprecedently tight time window. Still, if you look at the block diagram above, you can see what I'm saying about that tiny chainsaw, a tool Canadians are renowned for using well. Architecturally, in many key respects, Juniper has half the resources of Cypress. That reality is reflected first in the graphics engine at the top of the diagram, which includes only a single rasterizer, not two like Cypress.

ATI Radeon HD 5770 and 5750 Mainstream DX11 GPUs

Although the Radeon HD 5770 and Radeon HD 5750 are powered by the same GPU, there are some notable differences between the two cards that we should point out. As you can see in the chart above, the Radeon HD 5770 and 5750 sport the same 1.04B transistor GPU, manufactured using TSMC's 40nm process. The lower-end Radeon HD 5750, however, has a lower stock engine clock than the 5770 (700MHz vs. 850MHz) and 80 fewer stream processors (720 vs. 800). The 5750 also has four fewer texture units and a lower stock memory clock, which results in a lower texture fillrate and less peak memory bandwidth. Due to its pared down design, the Radeon HD 5750 also has lower power ratings. Idle power for the Radeon HD 5750 and 5770 are an impressive 16W and 18W, respectively, with maximum board power ratings of 86W and 108W. All things considered, the specifications for the Radeon HD 5770 and 5750 very much resemble last year's Radeon HD 4870 and 4850, but with DX11 support and few other new bells and whistles.
