The conventional wisdom about sub-$100 video cards is that they'll do in a pinch, as long as you don't plan on gaming much with them. But with its ATI Radeon HD 5570, which was released earlier this year, AMD tried to prove that wrong for the $79 price range—and came close to succeeding. You needed to make certain compromises—the usual, namely resolution and detail—but the card could net you decent-enough performance at lower and middle resolutions to basically meet sufficiently modest expectations. AMD is betting that even more is possible. It's provisioned a new version of the 5570 that keeps the rest of the card's specs the same, but sports 1GB of GDDR5 RAM instead of the original DDR3—all for about the same price. (For an overview of what GDDR5 is and how it works, check out our article GDDR5 Memory—Under the Hood.) This card might not be eye-poppingly powerful, but it can handle DirectX 11 (which no similarly priced Nvidia card can currently do) and AMD's multimonitor Eyefinity technology for up to three displays—both nice features.
Another in the HD 5xxx series, what is the Radeon HD 5570 1 GB good for? An ideal model for your living room machine set up for films and occasional gaming? At just 16.8 cm, this is a very small card. It's also a "low profile" card, which means it's half the height of the standard card. This is practical when it comes to machines that only support this type of format. The first nasty surprise comes with the cooling system. In contrast to the 5450, there's a fan and it's noisy. Even at idle, it's very noisy and slightly high-pitched (45.1 dB(A)). In gaming, noise levels rise to 48.1 dB(A). Low temperatures of 41°C at idle and 66°C in intense 3D activity make this even more of a shame. Why such a cooler? Users like to keep energy consumption on their living room computer down as low as possible. They'll be pleased to learn that this model benefits from the excellent economy of the Radeon HD 5000 series. Our set up uses just 72W in total in idle. Given the processor we're using, don't expect to go much lower. In load, energy consumption goes up to 144W, also excellent. We tested this model at 1280x1024 and at 1680x1050 pixels and you'll find all our readings in the face-off.
"This is like déjà vu all over again." That quote from the ever-so-quotable former New York Yankee Yogi Berra is particularly suitable for today's launch of the ATI Radeon HD 5570. Just last week, we brought you our coverage of the Radeon HD 5450 launch and wrote a bit about AMD's aggressive release schedule with regard to their DirectX 11-class GPUs. In this article, we will present to you yet another new DX11-class card from AMD, the ATI Radeon HD 5570. A quick look at its model number, along with a bit of deductive reasoning, will reveal that the Radeon HD 5570 falls somewhere in between the Radeon HD 5450 and 5670 in AMD's current line-up. And in fact, the card shares some attributes of both cards. We'll get to the finer details in a just a bit; for now, check out the specifications and related information below and hunker down for a look at what could be one of the hottest graphics cards for HTPC users in quite a while. A lot of groundwork had to be laid over the preceding months and even years before AMD could produce the entire Radeon HD 5000 series of products. Although the GPU at the heart of the Radeon HD 5570 is based on the same architecture as the other members of the DX-11 class Radeon HD 5000 series, the chip does leverage technologies already implemented in previously released GPU generations, so it's not all new.
