ATI Radeon HD 5550

Though Nvidia's recently released GeForce GTX 460 video card has allowed it to make major inroads around the $200 price point, AMD is still essentially unchallenged this generation below it. It offers several cards costing less than $100 alone: the ATI Radeon HD 5670 ($99), the 5570 ($79-$89), and the 5450 ($59). Now AMD is rounding out its American offerings even further with the 5550, which is priced in the $75-$79 range, and is available with either DDR3 or GDDR5 memory. (The card was originally launched back in February with the 5570, but was not available in North America until now.) The test card AMD sent us, in fact, looked identical to the 5570 we reviewed last week: a single slot card with a fan and a heat sink, offering three display outputs (DVI, VGA, and DisplayPort) and requiring no additional power supply connectors. The cards are similar in specs, as well, with just small differences in compute power, the core clock speed, and the number of stream processors. As with the other cards in the 5000 series, the 5550 supports DirectX 11 and AMD's Eyefinity multimonitor technology. As we recently saw when we looked at the GDDR5 version of the 5570, that memory is fast enough to make a major speed difference—even with hardware this modest.

ATI HD 5550 Video Card

A great computer is like a great car and a great car is far more than the sum of its parts. when buying a car most people don't spend much time on what type of tires or what type of transmission they are getting. A great graphics card is like a great set of tires something most people don't think of but adversely affects the performance. Because of the massive importance of a graphics card Techwarelabs is going to review the ATI HD 5550 a sweet little powerhouse in the 5XXX series that is the basis of all of ATI's high end cards to currently on the market. We test with a variety of software products running both real world tests as well as the more traditional synthetic benchmarks. For the ATI HD 5550 we will be testing using Left 4 Dead 2, Dirt 2, and Battlefield Bad Company 2 all will be tested using 2 monitors at 3360X1050 resolution as well as a single monitor setup at 1440X900. For the synthetic bench marks we will be using Furmark 1.8, 3Dmark vantage and Unigine Heaven benchmark. All tests were performed on a clean system with no other process running except those required for windows. The HD 5550 employs a relatively small fan that should not make a lot of noise. Ports on the card include Display port, DVI and HDMI.
