The Asus UX31 sets the performance bar high for Ultrabooks, but doesn’t quite offer the solid feel you would expect of a notebook with its price. The UX31 is more than just a flagship in Asus’ notebook lineup; it’s a flagship among Ultrabooks in general. It was one of the first products to hit the market, and also one of the most expensive. You’ll still have to spend about $1,049 to acquire a base model, but if you want some upgrades, you could end up spending up to $1,700. That’s a lot of money for a 13.3-inch laptop that doesn’t have an Apple logo on the back. In return for your coin, you receive typical, but strong, Ultrabook hardware. Our review unit arrived with a Core i5-2557M processor clocked at 1.7GHz with a maximum Turbo Boost of 2.7GHz. This is paired with 4GB of RAM and a 128GB solid state hard drive. In other words, the hardware is basically the same as most other Ultrabooks. Which isn’t a surprise — Intel’s put down some fairly right specifications, and there’s not any way to meet them without a combination of parts similar to this. There’s more to the Ultrabook then a specific collection of hardware, however. It’s all about being sexy, portable and cool. If this Asus laptop is going to justify its high price, it will do so because of its aesthetics. Let’s see how looks next to its competition.
Asus has had to respect the strict conditions laid down by Intel to qualify its Zenbook UX31E for the 'ultrabook' category: 2 cm thick, decent battery life and powerful processor. Sold at a little more than the Acer S3, does the UX31E also have the edge when it comes to performance? In contrast to the S3, here the casing hasn’t been designed to create the impression of being in aluminium. Rather, it is in aluminium, from top to tail! The only bits of plastic (matte) are the frames for screen and keyboard. The UX31E therefore doesn't pick up too many marks from your fingers. There are no issues with the finish and the different parts of the chassis all fit in nicely with each other. The UX31E also comes with a protective wallet - one thing less to shell out for! At first sight, the keyboard seems perfect. Once you start using it however, you find the chiclet keys are a bit shallow and if you tend to type with force when word processing, you’ll soon feel as if you’re typing on a touchscreen tablet. Nevertheless all the keys are in their usual positions, are a decent size and don't make too much keying noise. The multitouch touchpad is much nicer to use, has plenty of surface area and the glide is fluid.
When we first saw the Asus Zenbook UX31-RSL8 ($1,049 list at Best Buy), we knew it would take a top spot in the new laptop ultrabook category, thanks to its well-crafted all-metal construction, superb Bang & Olufsen audio, and a keyboard that rivals the trend-setting Apple MacBook Air 13-inch (Thunderbolt) ($1,299.99 direct, 4 stars) for comfort. And testing in our Labs showed that it provides more than six hours of battery life, as well as more features and better all-around performance than any other slim-bodied laptop we've reviewed. It's our Editors' Choice for ultrabooks, but it should be noted that later versions of this SKU at Best Buy will have the lower-clocked 1.6GHz Intel Core i5-2467M processor, rather than its current 1.7GHz Core i5-2557M. The Zenbook UX31-RSL8 measures 0.66 by 12.79 by 8.78 inches (HWD), and is roughly the same size as the Apple MacBook Air and Acer Aspire S3 ($899.99 direct, 3.5 stars). The UX31-RSL8's chassis has a spun finish, with tight concentric circles radiating out from the logo etched into its aluminum lid. Asus has emulated Apple's "unibody" construction with an all-metal "monoshell" chassis.
Asus's supersleek Ultrabook, the Zenbook UX31E, is finally here--and it's gorgeous. With its brushed-aluminum design, it more closely resembles the MacBook Air than other Ultrabooks do, and it really does elicit a Zen-like feeling. Throw in an i5 processor, Bluetooth 4.0, and a USB 3.0 port, and the Zenbook UX31E is almost--but not quite--perfect. Our review model, priced at $1099 (as of November 15, 2011), sports an Intel Core i5-2557M processor, 4GB of RAM, and a 128GB solid-state drive. It also features a built-in 0.3-megapixel webcam, a microphone, and 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi. Performance-wise, the Zenbook UX31E is surprisingly robust considering its sleek form. In our WorldBench 6 benchmark suite, the Zenbook earned a score of 125--better than several of our top-rated ultraportable laptops, including the Samsung Series 9 (which had a mark of 103), the Asus U36S (114), and the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 (124). This result also makes it slightly faster than the other Ultrabooks we’ve tested so far. The Zenbook has no discrete graphics card, and therefore relies on Intel's integrated graphics (as most ultraportables do).
The Asus Zenbook UX31 is Asus' first foray into the ultrabook world, offering a powerful Intel Core i7 processor wrapped up in a super-slim, sturdy aluminium shell. Asus is undoubtedly hoping to challenge Apple's dominance of the ultra-light market by offering the UX31 for £999, undercutting the similarly specced 13-inch MacBook Air by £100. The Zenbook UX31 is available now.The Zenbook UX31 is almost identical to its smaller sibling, the UX21. They're both supremely thin, measuring only 17mm at the back and tapering down to a razor-sharp 3mm at the front, which is as slim as the MacBook Air. With a razor-sharp tapering, don't drop it on your foot or it'll slice your toes clean off. The UX31, however, packs a 13.3-inch screen so its dimensions are made slightly bigger. With a width of only 325mm and a depth of 224mm, it'll happily slide into a small case without too much pushing and shoving. Apple's 13-inch MacBook Air is pretty much the same size so you can happily join in with the ultra-light crowd without feeling like a fool. Both the 11 and 13-inch Zenbooks are machined from a single piece of aluminium, making them particularly sturdy.
The Asus Zenbook UX31 is one of the first laptops to conform to Intel's Ultrabook specification. And, right away, we'll tell you - it stands toe-to-toe with Apple's MacBook Air in the fight for the title of best luxury ultraportable. More competition is to come, however, in the form of the Lenovo IdeaPad U300 S, Acer Aspire S3 and, potentially, others from the likes of HP and Dell.Back to the present though and Asus has done a terrific job with the Zenbook's design - even if you have to acknowledge that the designer took more than a sneaky glance at Apple's ultraportable first. The 13-inch Zenbook is fantastic to look at. When closed, the wedge-shaped laptop measures 17mm at its thickest point and a mere 3mm at its thinnest. The aluminium silver lid boasts a distinctive concentric circle design that catches and reflects the surrounding light. Befitting the name, the Zenbook's simple, sleek finish gives it a premium look that keeps getting better as soon as you lift the lid.The design ethic is in evidence earlier than that, though - it's a lovely experience as you open the box while Asus has also included a mini Display Port to D-Sub adapter and a USB to Ethernet lead as well. Both are housed in their own little pouch.
When we first saw the Asus Zenbook UX31 ($1,099 direct), we knew it would take a top spot in the new laptop ultrabook category, thanks to its well-crafted all-metal construction, superb Bang & Olufsen audio, and a keyboard that rivals the trend-setting Apple MacBook Air 13-inch (Thunderbolt) ($1,299.99 direct, 4 stars) for comfort. And testing in our Labs showed that it provides more than six hours of battery life, as well as more features and better all-around performance than any other slim-bodied laptop we've reviewed. It's our first Editors' Choice for the new category, but with new players coming into the ultrabook space this November, the question is how long will it reign? The Zenbook UX31 measures 0.66 by 12.79 by 8.78 inches (HWD), and is roughly the same size as the Apple MacBook Air and Acer Aspire S3 ($899.99 direct, 3.5 stars). The UX31's chassis has a spun finish, with tight concentric circles radiating out from the logo etched into its aluminum lid. Asus has emulated Apple's "unibody" construction with an all-metal "monoshell" chassis. But in contrast Apple's seamless single-piece construction, Asus has sandwiched together the palm rest and the underside of the chassis and bolted the two together.
If imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, then the MacBook Air should be positively blushing right around now. A sudden onslaught of Ultrabooks--the Intel-coined term for thin, MacBook Air-esque Windows laptops with fast boot times and sleek, high-end designs--has hit just in time for the holidays, and one of the most highly hyped ones we've seen is the Asus Zenbook, a product that doesn't shy away from an Apple-like design whatsoever. That's not such a bad thing: who doesn't want a thin, unibody metal lightweight laptop that starts fast and has a great battery life? The 13-inch Asus Zenbook, despite looking at least as expensive and high-end as laptops such as the Samsung Series 9, has a starting price of $1,099, which includes 4GB of RAM and a 128GB SSD drive. That's $200 less expensive than the equivalent MacBook Air. Smartly, the Zenbook gets that part right: when competing with a product as singularly well-known and highly rated as the MacBook Air, your product has to be either better or cheaper. Cheaper, it is: as for better, I'd have to disagree. Excellent speakers, sleek design, and a high-resolution screen are accompanied by a finicky keyboard and touch pad, giving the ever-so-slightly-off sensation when working on the Zenbook.
Windows users don't need to hide in shame whenever they see someone whip out a MacBook Air at the local Starbucks. The ASUS Zenbook UX31 is a slim, stylish Ultrabook that not only packs a robust Core i5 processor and 128GB SSD into its 3-pound unibody aluminum chassis, but a high-res 1600 x 900 display and excellent audio. The super-thin laptop also wakes up from sleep almost as soon as you lift the spun-metal lid. Starting at $1,099, the UX31 is one of the sexiest Windows notebooks we've ever seen, and it costs $200 less than the 13-inch MacBook Air. Read on to find out if this machine can take down the champ. Now, this is what an Ultrabook should look like. From the first moment we saw the ASUS Zenbook UX31, we were immediately taken with the brushed-aluminum chassis and slim design. The circular spun-metal pattern on the lid is slightly darker in color, and the deck has a linear brush pattern. It's subtle, but it's a nice touch. The metal island-style keys are set off by a black background. The hinge area gets its own treatment, with a fine dot pattern and "UX31 Series Ultra Slim" written in script.Yes, the UX31 looks similar to the 13-inch MacBook Air, but ASUS added enough original elements to make it its own.
The Asus Zenbook UX31 is Asus' first foray into the Ultrabook world, offering a powerful Intel Core i7 processor wrapped up in a super-slim sturdy aluminium shell. Asus is undoubtedly hoping to challenge Apple's dominance of the ultra-light market by offering the UX31 for £999, undercutting the similarly specced 13-inch MacBook Air by £100. The Zenbook UX31 will be available from 21 October.Like all Ultrabooks, the Zenbook is designed to be slim, light and powerful enough to tackle demanding tasks. The UX31 is very slender, measuring only 17mm at the thickest point at the back and tapering down to 3mm at the front -- that's as slim as Apple's 13-inch MacBook Air. With a 13.3-inch screen tucked inside, the chassis is small enough to carry around without too much trouble. With a width of only 325mm and a depth of 224mm, it'll happily slide into a small case without too much pushing and shoving. Apple's 13-inch MacBook Air is pretty much exactly the same size, so you can happily join in with the ultra-light crowd without feeling like a fool. Just look at that edge, you could shave with that. Maybe. The Zenbook is made from a single piece of aluminium, so it should be more sturdy than laptops bolted together from various pieces of plastic and metal.
