What's more ultraportable than an ultrabook? The ultrabooks we've tested to date, such as the Asus Zenbook UX31-RSL8 ($1,049 list, 4 stars), have had 13.3-inch displays. But if even a 2.9-pound sliver is too bulky for you, Asus also makes a 2.25-pound splinter: The Asus Zenbook UX21E-DH52 ($999 list) has an 11.6-inch screen, an Intel Core i5 processor, and the same 4GB of RAM and 128GB solid-state drive as its bigger sibling. In terms of high performance in a trivially light package, it's a netbook's worst nightmare. But though it's no nightmare to users, it has a couple of shortcomings that keep it from being a purely sweet dream, either. Just as 13.3-inch ultrabooks are invariably compared to the Apple MacBook Air 13-inch (Thunderbolt) ($1,299 direct, 4 stars), the UX21E-DH52 gets mentioned in the same breath as the MacBook Air 11-inch (Thunderbolt) ($999 direct, 3.5 stars). Besides the same price and same processor, the UX21E-DH52 and 11-inch MacBook Air share the same aluminum unibody construction, screen size, and resolution (1,366 by 768 pixels). The former has a USB 3.0 port, the latter a Thunderbolt port.
After the test of the UX31E, a 13.3-inch version, here’s the UX21E, another ultrabook to review for you. Will this 11.6-inch model do as well as its predecessor and even put the 2011 MacBook Air in the shade? The shell of the UX21E is in aluminium and this coating has the merit of both looking good and not being easily scratched or marked by fingers - a good way to make this laptop last a bit. Like the UX31E, the UX21E comes with a wallet that is perfectly adjusted to the dimensionsof the machine (29.9 x 19.6 x 0.3~1.7 cm). The keyboard doesn’t really handle all that well. When you’re slightly off the centre of a key, it doesn't always recognise that you have selected it. What’s more, some keys go in further than others. We were even more disappointed with this keyboard than that on the UX31E. The multitouch touchpad is much nicer to use, has plenty of surface area and the glide is fluid making it a real pleasure to use! Asus has gone for a poor quality webcam (0.3 Mpixel). The pixelised image, the fact that the blacks lack any nuance and that movements are so poorly rendered all go to make it rather unpleasant to use, making it a fallback solution at best. The connectivity comprises two USB ports (1 x 2.0 et 1 x 3.0) and a mic/headphones socket.
The Asus Zenbook UX21 is the first 11-inch ultrabook to hit the shelves, joining the likes of the Acer Aspire S3 and its bigger brother, the Asus Zenbook UX31. It expands the lineup of the new breed of super light and thin laptops, which has been nurtured by Intel. The ultrabook market is quickly expanding, with the Lenovo IdeaPad U300 and Toshiba Portege Z830 expected at the end of November. The Asus Zenbook UX21 brings the exceptional power of the Intel Ultrabook to the small form laptop market, making it a different proposition to any existing netbook. There's Sandy Bridge power for starters, and power to match any full form laptop, but Asus has condensed all this technology into the smallest of chassis.Of course, comparisons will be immediately drawn with the Apple MacBook Air, which is one of the best ultra-portable laptops money can buy, and these two 11-inch portables are very closely matched. The Asus Zenbook UX21 matches the Apple MacBook Air in every respect. It's just as well-built, made out of a single piece of aluminium, just as light and oozes the same head-turning style and class that makes people cast admiring glances while you work in public.
We're fortunate enough to get hands-on time with some pretty sexy hardware here at HH and we're not going to make any apologies for using the "s word" as it relates to this hot new notebook from Asus. Though some industry pundits might take issue with us describing this machine as "sexy," you'd have to agree this 12-inch slice of aluminum and cutting-edge technology is pretty damn sleek and pretty. The Asus Zenbook UX21E is a new ultra-slim notebook by Asus, that fits into the new "Ultrabook" class of machines, to use a term coined by Intel. The Zenbook UX21E is an incredible 3mm thick at the front and 9mm at the rear and has spun metal and hairline aluminum for a strikingly sleek appearance. It's also built with Intel's new low-power Sandy Bridge Core i7 2677M mobile dual-core processor, 4GB of DDR3-1333 memory, a 128GB SATA 3 SSD and an 11.6-inch LCD with a native resolution of 1366x768. Here's a quick-take demo of the product in action, but be sure to journey on through the pages ahead for our detailed review with all the analysis and our usual benchmark gauntlet. Intel's QS67 Express chipset offers a power-optimized version of the Sandy Bridge 2nd generation Core mobile platform solutions that have been shipping in the market for some time.
PCMag Editors have not yet tested the Asus Zenbook UX21 (UX21E-DH52). We did, however, get some hands-on time with the laptop, and have tested and reviewed the Asus Zenbook UX31 ($1,099 direct, 4 stars). We got our first taste of the newly announced Ultrabooks back in May, when Asus gave PCMag a look at its UX21 at Computex. Now branded as the Asus Zenbook UX21 (UX21E-DH52), the overall product is the same, but the company has now provided more details about pricing and what comes in that slim chassis. Two configurations of the Asus Zenbook UX21 will be offered in the United States, with the base configuration now retailing for $999. That the the Zenbook UX21 looks similar to the Apple MacBook Air 11-inch (Thunderbolt) is no accident. Like the Air, the UX21 is extremely thin and light, measuring only 7 millimeters thick at its thickest point and tapering down to a mere 3 millimeters at the edge. It's also a scant 2.42 pounds - within 3 ounces of the MacBook. It has several unique features to it as well, like a sound-system designed with Bang & Olufsen's ICEpower audio technology.
The Zenbook is Asus' first foray into the Ultrabook world, offering powerful guts wrapped up in a super-slim and sturdy aluminium shell. Asus is undoubtedly hoping to challenge Apple's dominance of the ultra-light market by offering the UX21 for £849, undercutting the similarly specced 11-inch MacBook Air by £150. We think it just might have a shot. The Zenbook UX21 packs a 1.6GHz Intel Core i5 processor with 6GB of RAM. It will be available from 21 October.Like all Ultrabooks, the Zenbook is designed to be slim, light and powerful enough to tackle demanding tasks. The UX21 is very slender, measuring only 17mm at the thickest point at the back and tapering down to 3mm at the front, which is as slim as the 11-inch Macbook Air. That is a seriously slim piece of kit. Our iPhone 4 is helpfully providing some perspective. The UX21 is packing an 11.56-inch screen, so the chassis has been kept as small as possible. With a width of only 297mm and a depth of 196mm, it's small enough to slide into the most diminutive of bags without a second thought. The 11-inch MacBook Air has pretty much identical dimensions, so you can happily play 'ultra-light Top Trumps' without fear of an easy defeat.
