Product Survey: Laptops

"Pure finesse, pure performance", is how Asus describes the UL30A. Light and with stylish lines, Asus have balanced decent battery life with pretty good performance thanks to a low energy consumption dual core processor. As with the larger UL80 and UX50V, Asus has chosen to lay an entirely glossy black plastic interior throughout the UL30A. Sure, it's nice to look at but after a few minutes of normal use the machine soon becomes covered in fingerprints (which were clean!). It's impossible to keep the machine clean, which is a shame as otherwise it does look sleek! The lid is however, in a strange contrast to the rest of the machine, in nice looking brushed aluminium. The keys are spaced on the . At 15 x 15 mm they're set out in the usual way and give a firm, quiet typing experience. The typing area is comfortable and keying satisfactory. The is well-proportioned and blends into the plastic of the shell. You can make it out thanks to small hollows (see photo below) which stop your fingers from sticking to it. The glide is nice and precision fine. We have however seen wider touchpads on some competition machines (the MacBooks). The main advantage of this type of touchpad lies in its look and aesthetic. The is pretty poor.
