Asus' ultrathin U41JF is designed to be both powerful and portable, with a chassis that is around 1 inch thick and a Nvidia graphics card. Unfortunately, the entire notebook looks cheap, despite obvious attempts to make it look otherwise. This notebook has all the right parts, from the brushed-aluminum cover to the Chiclet-style keyboard and fancy graphics card (though no Sandy Bridge processor or Blu-ray drive), but it's still very obviously a budget machine. Our review model, priced at $830, came loaded with a 2.53GHz Intel Core i3 380M processor, 4GB of RAM (upgradable to 8GB), and an Nvidia GeForce GT 425M graphics card. It also carried a DVD-RW drive, a built-in 0.3-megapixel Webcam, and a 500GB hard drive. It ran a 64-bit version of Windows 7 Home Premium and had a 14.1-inch screen. The U41JF's attractive, brushed-aluminum silver cover is simple, with a small mirrored logo in the center. The rest of the chassis, save for the interior deck area (which features the same brushed-aluminum as the cover), is black and subtly textured. Asus has sacrificed some durability in favor of portability: the laptop doesn't feel sturdy at all, and the lid/display bends easily under very light pressure.
The ASUS U41JF is a thin-and-light 14-inch notebook with powerful Nvidia graphics and excellent battery life. Combine that with a good Intel Core i3 processor and a price tag of less than $900. The Nvidia GT 425M graphics card is more than powerful enough to run the latest games. The two-year warranty coverage is notable and it includes one year of accidental damage protection; similar coverage is extra on competing notebooks. Build and DesignThe ASUS U41JF's silver and black chassis is unlikely to turn heads though it still looks good in its own right. The silver brushed aluminum lid is especially attractive and feels cool to the touch. As mentioned earlier, the chassis is just 1.1” thin; the lid is one of the thinnest I have seen on a notebook in any size range. The U41JF feels a bit heavier than expected due to its large 8-cell battery; it came in at 4.8 lbs. on my digital scale.
A brushed aluminum lid. More than 6 hours of battery life. And enough graphics power to play demanding 3D games. The 14-inch ASUS U41Jf ($849) is a thin-and-light notebook that combines sleek looks with solid performance. But there are some things we don't like about this machine. Are our qualms enough to cause you to look elsewhere? Read on.Clad in sliver with a brushed aluminum lid, the ASUS U41Jf certainly looks classy. The deck of the notebook has the same brushed metal look as the lid but is made of plastic. The edges and underside use matte black plastic, sporting a diamond crosshatch pattern. The glossy black finish of the bezel continues to the area above the keyboard, where the same crosshatch pattern lends a jewel-like look. Still, looks are only skin deep; the lid visibly flexed when pressed.Measuring 13.3 x 9.8 x 1.1 inches and weighing in at 4.8 pounds, the ASUS U41Jf's dimensions are on a par with other 14-inch thin-and-light notebooks such as the Samsung QX410 (5 pounds). The U41Jf is trim enough to slide into a standard-sized laptop bag. When streaming Hulu videos, we measured 96 degrees on the U41Jf's touchpad.
Asustek Computer may still be best known for its low-cost Netbooks, and occasional high-end reaches such as its Republic of Gamers desktop replacements, but the company churns out a fair number of middle-of-the-road systems as well. The Asus U41JF is a solidly built 14-inch notebook that will work fine for nearly any mainstream task, but at the same time is no bargain at $849. Worse, it's easily outclassed in the design department by its 13-inch cousin, the Asus U36JC, which costs around the same, but is thinner, lighter, and more attractive, and has the same discrete graphics and a better processor. Neither model has Intel's new second-gen Core i-series processors (formerly code-named Sandy Bridge), but for mainstream systems such as this, that upgrade may take a while to hit store shelves, especially given Intel's recent troubles with the new platform. At prices approaching Apple's MacBook (and topping Toshiba's 13-inch R705), unless you're wedded to the idea of the system's Nvidia GeForce 425M graphics, there are better-priced or nicer-looking laptops out there. That said, the U41JF has really good battery life, and never really let us down, which may sound like faint praise, but is praise nonetheless.
The key to any successful mainstream laptop is to compliment blazingly fast parts with a battery large enough to handle them. There are a few that can strike this tough balance, including the Apple MacBook Pro 13-inch ($1,199 direct, 4 stars) and Samsung QX410-J01 ($829.99 street, 4 stars). The Asus U45Jc-A1 ($867 street, 4.5 stars) mainstream laptop knocks it out of the ballpark in terms of performance and battery life, with over 10 hours of battery, and a good CPU and GPU combo. Now meet its successor, the Asus U41JF-A1 ($857 street). The U41JF-A1 has the biggest battery in the mainstream category, only this time it's paired with the highest-clocked Core i3 processor available and an Nvidia's GeForce 425M graphics chip. While its 8 hours of battery life wasn't as impressive as the U45Jc-A1, it still beats the socks off of any of its rivals. Thus, the U41Jc-A1 takes over as the new Editors' Choice. Design is something that can't be taken lightly in the mainstream category, as the competition is fierce. Like its predecessor, the Asus U41JF-A1 uses nothing but the best materials, fitting the lid and palm rest area with aluminum.
