Laptop Reviews: Compare PC and Mac Laptops and Netbooks

With the Bamboo U33jc, Asus is giving us a machine with good performance levels, yes, but also a 13.3-inch ultra-portable with an original design that stands out from the herd of existing models. Hardware, design and build: a mimimum of plastic Whether you like its design or not, you have to admit the U33jc stands out from other models with its bamboo finish, which, by the way, is exemplary when it comes to quality. You do need to take care when carrying it around however. The hood on our test model didn't really enjoy the short trip we took it on in our rucksack. It came out slightly marked. We like the fact that the chassis around the keyboard isn't in plastic but rather in brushed alumimium. The only parts in plastic are the connectivity, the underneath (matte) and the screen surround (glossy). Maybe, one day, manufacturers will stop with their glossy surfaces which pick up finger marks all too easily. The keyboard with separated keys, takes up a little over 29.5 cm of the total 32.8 cm wide shell. Keying is nice and quiet. The keys are well-proportioned and those who touch type shouldn't have any problems here. Although the wrist rest coating won't transport you to other worlds, it is big enough for decent comfort.

ASUS U33Jc

We've long known the inconvenient truth about the negative toll our tech-obsessed society takes on the environment, but Asus makes being green easy with its new U Series Bamboo Collection of laptops featuring hybrid bamboo/aluminum chassis. The wood-paneled U33Jc review unit I looked at is 15 percent bamboo (according to the manufacturer) and arrived in eco-friendly packaging that Asus claims is "made of 100% natural and recyclable bamboo pulp and non-woven packing cloth." It's a nice gesture, but for $999 I need more than a warm fuzzy feeling. Asus delivers with a 13-inch screen, an Intel Core i3 370M clocked at 2.4GHz, 4GB of RAM, and a 500GB hard drive spinning bytes at 5400 rpm. The U33Jc rolled through our WorldBench 6 benchmark test suite with a score of 103--impressive for an ultraportable. Of the ultraportable laptops we've tested recently, only the Toshiba Portege R700-S1330 earned a higher score. Connectivity options abound with 802.11n wireless, Bluetooth, and Intel Wi-Di wireless display support. The chrome siding sports an impressive array of ports with HDMI, VGA, and USB 3.0 ports on the left edge complementing two more USB 2.0 ports, microphone and headphone jacks, a gigabit ethernet jack, and a five-in-one card reader on the right.

ASUS U33JC Bamboo Review

ASUS is no stranger when it comes to innovative laptop design, and the new 13-inch ASUS U33JC-A1 is the latest addition to the company's attractive "Bamboo series." Yes, when we say "Bamboo" we mean this notebook is covered in wood protected by a durable finish. If you're in the market for a classy-looking laptop with an Intel Core i3 processor, Nvidia discrete graphics, and impressive battery life, the ASUS U33JC deserves a much closer look.BUY the U33JC-A1 I3-370M 500GB 4GB W7HPCDW.com $999.99Amazon.com $999.00see all pricing for the U33JC-A1 I3-370M 500GB 4GB W7HPOur review unit of the ASUS U33JC (U33JC-A1) comes with the following features: Build and DesignASUS has long been known for designing laptops that break the traditional mold of notebooks. Heck, this is the company that developed the world's first "scented" notebooks a few years ago. The ASUS Bamboo series is another one of those interesting ASUS designs that deserves some attention. In a world full of boring plastic and metal alloy notebooks, ASUS realized the potential appeal of wood with a high-quality finish. The company's newest addition to its Bamboo series is the 13-inch U33JC.

Asus U33Jc-A1

The Asus U33Jc-A1 ($999 street) is a standout among the ever-growing crowd of laptop look-alikes. Portions of this laptop are made of bamboo, the same stuff pandas eat, but polished to look like a stained hardwood floor. Bamboo is environmentally friendly, durable, and in some cases, fire proof, but no one other than Asus has dared to use this material on a laptop. A speedy Intel Core i3 processor and two GPUs that leverage Nvidia's Optimus technology lie beneath the bamboo frame. If you can get by without an optical drive and put up with some warmth from the system's base, you can have a laptop that blends in with your antique furniture. This is not the first time Asus has taken everyday materials and fused them with its laptops. The U2E-A2B ($2,499 list, ) was the first leather-clad laptop, and the company is clearly a big proponent of sleek aluminum metal, as shown by the U30Jc-1A ($899 street, ), UL80Vt-A1 ($823 street, ), and UL50VF-A1 ($850 street, ). I've reviewed Asus designs that use foam, synthetic fabric, and even denim cloth, so you can understand why a tough, eco-friendly substance like bamboo would fit into its design scheme.

Asus U33Jc-A1

No matter how inspired a laptop design, chances are it is made of either glossy or textured plastic, or, in some upscale cases, aluminum or magnesium. There's nothing wrong with that, but there's certainly room for some creativity around the margins, and that's exactly what Asus brings to the table in the new U33Jc-A1. This $999 13-inch laptop is partially clad in actual bamboo, creating a unique upscale look and feel that we find greatly appealing to our mid-century modern design tastes. Beyond the look and feel, this Intel Core i3 system also works in some useful features, including Intel's Wireless Display technology (for beaming the video output to an external display), and a discrete Nvidia 310M GPU. This is the first time we've seen Wireless Display and an Nvidia GPU in the same laptop; they're normally incompatible. The clever workaround Asus uses requires Nvidia's Optimus technology, which can automatically switch between integrated and discrete graphics on the fly. Optimus disengages the Nvidia GPU when it's not needed (which is most of the time) and that tricks the laptop into only seeing its integrated Intel graphics chips -- which in turn allows the Wireless Display software to launch (you'll still need a sold-separately $99 Netgear adaptor to connect to your external display).
