ASUS's Republic of Gamers (ROG) line of motherboards has been going strong for a few years now. ROG boards are made for the gamer and enthusiast having the features that these users would want. The board we are taking a look at today is no different. The Rampage IV Formula features 4-way SLI / CrossFireX support, ASUS's own SupremeFX III audio, Intel Ethernet, ASUS's ROG connect technology, support for quad channel memory up to 2400 MHz, and so much more. The Rampage IV Formula is positioned between the Rampage IV Extreme at the high-end and the Rampage IV Gene which is ASUS's mATX version of this board. Read on to see if this is the perfect board for your gaming setup. Special thanks to ASUS for providing us with the Rampage IV Formula Motherboard to review. The Rampage IV comes in a normal box that we are used to seeing motherboards come in. It is colored red to match the ROG theme. On the back of the box it goes over all of the specifications of the board and gives you an overview of the back panel I/O ports.
With the X79 launch we have seen many boards, some amazing and some just average, but they have all performed rather well. When it comes to ROG performance, however, "rather well" is not enough. Today we have another ROG board, the little brother to the Rampage IV Extreme. The Rampage IV Extreme model was the pinnacle of overclocking technology, which is what the extreme boards have come to be known for. The Rampage IV Formula still meets many of these goals but with a more reserved approach to the feature end of the spectrum, as many of the OC-centric features have been removed in order to target this board more toward the extreme gaming market instead of the extreme overclocking crowd. This makes sense as the Extreme board has many features that are strongly targeted toward the overclocking and subzero benchmarking crowd, and are not necessarily needed by the high end gaming community. The ROG brand has been very good about positioning boards for specific user groups, and with the Rampage IV Formula, it appears that the positioning may hit a good spot in the gaming/enthusiasts market while not necessarily breaking the bank.
When you come up with an extreme, enthusiast-class platform like Intel's nouveau Sandy Bridge E, you want the motherboard boys to come in and sort you out with a blazing mobo to showcase its full potential. Generally you can count on Asus, and generally it's the Republic of Gamers range that delivers. The Rampage IV Formula is the first of the Republic of Gamers boards we've seen tailored to Intel's X79 specs and we were hoping for something a little more impressive. Especially given that £300+ price tag. The gamers' boards are now the Sabertooth series, offering a decent balance of price, features and casual overclocking capabilities. The RoG boards are creating an even smaller niche, catering only to the very obsessive hardcore clockers. These guys aren't gamers – they're after numbers, looking to get the fastest silicon going simply for the sake of it. Cajones, hombre? The RoG Rampage IV Formula fits this category perfectly. The BIOS itself feels familiar enough at first, then you start to notice there seem to be many more settings than you might have expected, with names the casual user probably won't recognise. There's little of the hand-holding you get from the auto-overclocking options of the Pro or the Sabertooth X79.
