Let’s be frank: If you’re even thinking about buying into Intel’s deliciously fast LGA2011 platform this early, you are an enthusiast—Enthusiast with a capital-freaking-E, since you can’t even look at LGA2011 without buying a $550 chip. So if you’re jumping in, you might as well use both feet. Asus’s P9X79 Deluxe certainly fits that bill, delivering cool features and a stout price tag: This X79-based board will set you back a cool $400. “Deluxe” features on board include digital VRMs, Asus’s trademark UEFI, and built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, with a bundled smartphone app that enables you to remotely overclock and monitor your system. This board also has an all-new feature that lets you use a particular USB port to update its BIOS without a processor installed. The P9X79 is an eight-DIMM-slot board, not one of the weaker four-slot boards that limit your upgrade path. The eight-DIMM design will let you build a 32GB PC for less than $200 in memory cost. Doing that on any four-slot board will set you back more than $1,000. What do you do with 32GB? You set up a RAM drive, of course! We set up a RAM drive on this board using eight 4GB sticks of Corsair Vengeance RAM and saw read speeds of 4GB/s. Take that, SSDs!
The priciest motherboard in our roundup, the Asus P9X79 Deluxe seems like a good place to start, as it should set the bar for all other X79 boards. The P9X79 Deluxe has extensive multi-GPU support, including 3-way SLI and 4-way CrossfireX. There are four PCI Express 3.0 x16 slots, though only three of them are really usable. The second and third slots are placed adjacent to each other, making the third slot too cramped for dual-slot cards. With three cards, the board provides full x16 bandwidth to the primary and secondary GPUs, while the third is limited to x8. The board packs eight DIMM slots for a max. memory configuration of 64GB. The board supports memory frequencies of 1866, 1600, 1333 and 1066MHz while 2400 and 2133MHz are possible via overclocking. Asus has improved its board's storage capabilities by expanding on X79's two 6Gb/s SATA and four 3Gb/s SATA ports. The Marvell 88SE9128 controller has been used to provide two more 6GB/s SATA ports (color-coded white). The ASMedia ASM1061 controller is also used to provide two eSATA 6Gb/s ports (colored green) on the board's I/O panel. Asus has network connectivity well covered with dual Gigabit Ethernet ports as well as a wireless solution.
The recent release of Intel's X79 Express chipset, and the Sandy Bridge–E processors (like the Core i7-3960X) to go with it, predictably supercharged performance in the high-end computing space. Where power goes, Asus always follows, and that company's new X79 Express motherboard, the P9X79 Deluxe, more than keeps pace with Intel. Though on the expensive side ($379.99 list), it offers an array of features stunning enough to turn the head of any enthusiast or wannabe. This is as good a balance of features and affordability as you'll find in an X79 Express motherboard. Likely to be of most interest to potential buyers is that the ATX-form-factor P9X79 Deluxe is loaded to take full advantage of the X79 Express chipset's quad-channel memory support. It boasts not the minimum of four memory bays, but a full eight, which means it can hold up to 64GB of DDR3 RAM running at 2,400MHz when overclocked. One thing to keep in mind, however, is that all these bays consume a lot of board real estate, so you may find installing some CPU coolers on the new (and itself oversized) LGA2011 socket a cramped process. But the abundance of memory bays shows that with the P9X79 Deluxe, Asus is subscribing to the \"more is more” philosophy—and you'll certainly see that reflected elsewhere as well.
