OverviewIt may look like a jet turbine on top of your CPU, but can the Deepcool Fiend Shark live up to its platform cooling claims?Right then first things first, we must be honest, we don't get the name either. But someone at Deepcool obviously has an attraction to sea life as there is a Tiger Shark and a couple of Killer Whale's in their product line-up too. You just know by the sheer size of the box it comes in that the Fiend Shark is a bit special, but even so, its size may still surprise you, as will the care taken with the way the contents are packed. It certainly puts most other cooler manufacturer's to shame in that respect, with its fixing components all having their own separate space in the two plastic packing trays. It's a beast of a thing and certainly the biggest top-cooler we ...

You can't get the full BF3 experience on a console, but what does it take to get it on a PC? In an age of sloppy console ports, Battlefield 3 is a huge relief for PC gamers. Not only is the PC a “lead platform” for DICE’s flagship modern shooter, but we’re getting all the good stuff: 64-player maps? You won’t find ‘em on a console. DirectX 11 graphics? Only on a PC, Sparky. Indeed, Battlefield 3’s Frostbite 2 engine brings fully destructible environments, ambient occlusion, MLAA, and full DX11 support—and it reaches its full potential only on the PC. But with great power comes great power requirements: DICE’s minimum recommended GPU is a GeForce GTX 560 or AMD Radeon HD 6950, and performance scales up from there. That means a lot of us are going to have to go get new vide...

AVA finds a way to mix performance and silence In our world, performance and silence go together about as well as Aliens and Predators. Each one has its appeal, but put them together, and you generally get a turd. That’s a fact AVADirect has set out to disprove with a PC apparently named by U.S. Army logistics command: Custom Gaming PC, Silent PC, Low-Noise Custom Computer System. Despite its funktastic name, the AVADirect PC doesn’t disappoint and seems capable of creating its own alternate reality where performance commingles harmoniously with peace and quiet. Sure, Puget System’s virtually silent Serenity Mini that we reviewed in our August issue was certainly fast with its 3.3GHz Core i5-2500K overclocked to 4.5GHz, but its Radeon HD 5750 didn’t have the ponies for heavy gaming...

Best Intel Z68 motherboardFact number one. Intel makes the finest PC processors on the planet and has done consistently ever since the first Core 2 chips rolled out way back in summer 2006. Fact number two. It's still prone to occasional cock-ups. Look no further than the Sandy Bridge chipset debacle. Funnily enough, we're not talking about the recall of the P67 chipset due to a broken SATA controller, though that was bad enough. Nor are we complaining once about Intel's addiction to pointless new CPU sockets. Lest you've forgotten, the latest Sandy Bridge processors come a new socket that is different to its predecessor to tune of just one pin and exists, we believe, purely to force punters to upgrade their motherboards. Nope, the real problems with the initial Sandy Bridge compatible chi...

USB 3.0 expansion card is not new but most controllers only offers two ports. For those who need more ports, HighPoint has released a four port USB 3.0 expansion card. The card plugs into the PCI-E x4 slot and uses ASMedia controller that we first encountered with the Asus P8Z68-V Pro. The controller offers slightly better read performance

New Z68 chipset makes big improvements over P67 When is a chipset truly a new chipset? That’s a question that many PC enthusiasts will ponder when they see the specs for Intel’s Z68 chipset, which is at the heart of the Asus P8Z68-V Pro board. For one thing, there’s no native USB 3.0, no additional PCI-E lanes (which are tied to the CPU anyway), and still the paltry two SATA 6Gb/s ports that Intel included with the original P67 chipset’s PCH chip. If these negatives are enough to make you skip the rest of this review, know that you’re making a big mistake. The Intel Z68 chipset in the Asus P8Z68-V Pro brings SSD caching and virtual graphics to Sandy Bridge. That’s because the Z68 chipset in the P8Z68-V Pro offers several major advances over the P67: the ability to overclock th...
