Intel P67 Roundup: ASUS, GIGABYTE, Intel & MSI

To help kick things off, let's take a look at what could be the most robust board in this group; ASUS' P8P67 Deluxe. Though a little more expensive than the others, at $230, the Deluxe series of motherboards has long been considered to be one of the best for those who want a bit of everything. While there's no sort of overkill here, the number of features can still be a little overwhelming. A major feature ASUS is pushing with its x67 and Z68 line-ups is "Digi+VRM", a feature that encompasses two others; EPU (Energy Processing Unit) and TPU (TurboV Processing Unit). Working together, these two features intelligently adjust voltages and other options on-the-fly to help deliver the most efficient power scheme possible - and also the most reliable overclocking. Though there is a lot of marketing speak to dig through here, I like what ASUS has been doing with its power schemes over the years, and with Digi+VRM, things continue to get even better. While optimized for both performance and temperatures, Digi+VRM also helps to reduce interference and power noise to and from the CPU, which can result in not only improved overclocking, but higher reliability and longer life.

Motherboard Mano-a-Mano: We Review Three LGA1155 Boards!

We’ll be honest: We’ve had the most hands-on time with Asus’s new P8P67 Deluxe board of any P67-based board this cycle. That’s because Asus sent a functioning board to us far before its competitors (including Intel) did, and as such, we conducted the bulk of our Sandy Bridge chip testing with the P8P67 Deluxe board. Usually, early boards mean soldered-on wires, unpredictable performance, and hiccups that are often a consequence of very early hardware. None of that was true of the P8P67 Deluxe board. Out of the box, it offered rock-solid stability and its performance was excellent across the board. Front-panel USB 3.0 is finally a reality with Asus’s P8P67 Deluxe. POST the P8P67 Deluxe and you’ll notice the first big change: Universal Extensible Firmware Interface, or UEFI. The arrival of UEFI on the PC might feel like that long-awaited unicorn bar mitzvah, but it’s actually been around for some time. Numerous Intel boards have had UEFI but you’d never know it from looking at their BIOS-like interface. You won’t get that feeling from the P8P67 Deluxe board, and any misgivings you have regarding the change to UEFI will likely vanish when you see the beautiful interface Asus has developed.

ASUS P67 Motherboards: P8P67 Deluxe and P8P67 Pro

Retailed at $235, the box for the P8P67 Deluxe is simple yet informative, showcasing the motherboard's many innovative features. Flipping over the front cover, buyers can view the motherboard through the see-through windows. The motherboard is shipped in an antistatic bag surrounded by the cardboard tray. The accessories are placed underneath the board. The board is not overly protected, and while the packaging is simple, it does the job of displaying the board and protect it during shipping. The P8P67 Deluxe has a very clean layout. ASUS uses a blue and black color scheme throughout the board, where different components are color coded with different shades of blue. With the memory controller moved to the processor, there is no need for a North Bridge and South Bridge anymore, so the motherboard has plenty of space for extra components. The board is completely passive cooled. A single low profile heatsink sits above the P67 Express chipset. Around the CPU socket area, ASUS places a two large, yet low profile heatsinks above the power PWM and the MOSFETs. Looking at the picture above, users can get a sense of just how high the heatsinks are.
