Not one to be pigeon-holed, the Asus N55SF brings the smart, professional looks of an office laptop, adds the Blu-ray drive of an entertainment machine and tops it off with the powerful graphics processor of a gaming rig.Even better, the processor's grunt makes it a good performer in all three areas. With a relatively affordable price tag, it could be a great option if you want one laptop to suit all aspects of your life. The model I tested came with an Intel Core i7 processor, 6GB of RAM and is available now for £750.Unlike other gaming laptops like the MSI GT680 or the Alienware M14x, the N55SF doesn't make a big song and dance about having a dedicated graphics card shoved inside. Instead of angry colours and glowing vents, you're met with a mature, even professional look. The lid is covered in a glossy piano-black plastic with a metallic band surrounding it, giving it an appearance similar to HP's Envy 14 Spectre ultrabook. It doesn't have the same premium feel as the Spectre though as it's not topped with glass. The plastic doesn't give a lot of flex so it still feels pretty sturdy. The lid is sleek and stylish -- that is, until you slather the grease from your filthy digits onto it. The whole machine looks attractive.
At first glance, it's difficult to get a handle on exactly what type of laptop the Asus N55SF is. The powerful Core i7-2570QM processor, huge keyboard with numeric keypad and slab of speaker atop the keyboard suggest that it may be intended as a desktop replacement. But the weight and general lack of bulk suggest otherwise. When all's said and done, this is a out-and-out powerhouse of an entertainment laptop. There's Bang and Olufsen ICEPower audio, 6GB of memory and a Blu-ray drive hidden inside that hefty case. Indeed, this is a high performance family laptop with a gaming bent – the high end Nvidia GeForce GT 555M has a whopping 2GB of memory on board just for graphics, providing some of the best 3D performance you'll find in a laptop. While the chassis is big, it's not as bulky as you'd think and is easily to move around the living room. Sadly the power brick isn't so portable and is a bit of a lump. The chassis is a little plasticky, but is topped off by a lovely curved, glossy piano black lid with a smart looking chrome finish around the edge. Unfortunately the lid does pick up fingerprints quickly, but that's an issue with all such glossy laptop lids – particularly when they're being used by kids.
This multimedia powerhouse has a full HD display, Blu-ray writer, Bang & Olufsen speakers, plus a 2GB Nvidia graphics card for playing the latest games.Build and DesignASUS got more right than wrong with the N55S' design. The exterior is an aesthetically pleasing mix of black and silver. The lid is a glossy black which looks great at first glance but quickly becomes an eyesore thanks to fingerprints. I like the silver trim piece going around the lid and the brushed aluminum piece right below the screen - they give the notebook that extra high-end look. The N55S is constructed of plastic and reasonably strong plastic at that; the palm rest barely flexes when pressed down upon. I'm greatly appreciative that ASUS used anti-glare plastic instead of glossy plastic, which is all too common on consumer notebooks. Chassis flex is average for a consumer notebook; nothing alarming, however. Fit and finish is good; there are no uneven gaps between parts or sharp edges. Those looking to upgrade the N55S will find it straightforward to do so; two removable panels on the bottom of the chassis provide access to the hard drive and memory slots (RAM).
While the Asus N55SF may not be the speediest desktop replacement laptop that PCWorld has ever tested, it's still darn fast. It also offers good gaming frame rates, and delivers considerably better-than-average sound and video. At only $1249 (as of November 9, 2011), it's about a third the price of top-performing desktop replacement laptops, too. Unless you need workstation muscle, it should be on your short list. The N55SF's WorldBench 6 score of 128, while not record-setting, is still very good, and about what you'd expect from an Intel Core i7-2630M processor and an Nvidia GeForce GT 555M GPU. The main differences between the N55SF and some of its faster, pricier rivals, such as the Dell M6600, are that the CPU and GPU both sit a couple notches down from the top of the scale and the GPU isn't workstation-class (in other words, OpenGL and CAD optimized). That said, you'll find games playable at any resolution and detail, short of ultrahigh detail at 1920 by 1080. The rest of the N55SF componentry includes 8GB of DDR3 memory and a 7200-rpm, 750GB hard drive. The array of ports consists of two USB 3.0 connections, two USB 2.0 ports, VGA and HDMI video-out, and an SDHC/MultiMediaCard slot.
When it comes to speaker sound quality, not all laptops are created equal. Because of their size, desktop replacement laptops tend to have better speaker systems than smaller laptops, sometimes accommodating up to four speakers and subwoofer. The Asus N55SF-A1 ($1,249.99 list), a desktop replacement, uses sound quality as its unique selling proposition, as the speakers are design by none other than world-renown Bang & Olufsen ICEpower. In addition to a pair of powerful built-in speakers, the N55SF-A1 also comes with an external subwoofer that amplifies the base. And it's a powerful laptop too, equipped with a quad-core Intel processor and hardcore gaming graphics from Nvidia. It'll cost you a significant chunk of change, though. The finish on the plastic lid of the N55SF-A1 has the glossy look and feel of black grand piano, accentuated by a chrome trim. Although elegant, it still isn't as aesthetically pleasing as the metal-clad Dell XPS 15z (Microsoft) ($999.99 list, 4 stars) and Apple MacBook Pro 15-inch (Thunderbolt) ($2,199 direct, 4 stars) take laptops designs to a whole new level - and they're a lot thinner two (an inch thick).
