Asus Mars II Review

Imagine a graphics card weighing 5.25 pounds with three (yes, three) 8-pin PCI Express power connectors. Now imagine this card taking up three PCI Express slots and almost sucking the life out of an 850W power supply. That may be one reason Asus named this card after the Roman god of war. It’s probably the most powerful single graphics card we’ve tested, but that power comes at a substantial cost. You’ll need the right type of motherboard and case, too—one where you can install a three-slot-wide card that’s 12.25 inches long and 5 inches tall. Now that you’ve recovered from the heart palpitations induced by the price, let’s talk about the real meat of this card. What Asus engineers have done is build a full GTX 580 SLI combo on a single card. We’re not talking about a namby-pamby GTX 590, which sacrifices clock speed to get a reasonable-size card. The Mars II is a pull-out-the-stops, full-steam-ahead GTX 580 SLI on a stick. And the cores aren’t just any 580 cores, either; they’re top-binned GPU dies that run at 782MHz—faster than run-of-the-mill GTX 580 chips. The 3GB of GDDR5 ticks along at 1,002MHz. Asus built the card using its DirectCU thermal system with a pair of 12cm fans.

Asus MARS II Limited Edition review

Well, here it is, the Asus Mars II LE, the undisputed performance king of this graphics generation. You may have heard some of the hype surrounding the Asus Republic of Gamers MARS II Limited Edition. It's got people excited, and rightly so, it's a pair of Nvidia GTX 580 graphics cards in one – you've probably heard that it's the world's fastest and most powerful graphics card. You heard right. Just as the first iteration of Asus' Republic of Gamers MARS set new levels of rendering and graphics processing performance by sticking two powerful GPUs onto one overclockable PCB, the limited edition Asus RoG MARS II takes that recipe and adds more beef. The first MARS graphics card from Asus dropped two of Nvidia's GTX 285 chips onto one card, just as Nvidia itself had done with the GTX 295 – a dual-GPU card powered by two GTX 265 chips. Until Asus released the RoG MARS, Nvidia's humble GTX 295 was the most powerful graphics card on earth, and it cost £330. Then came that first MARS. It eclipsed the GTX 295 in every department, including the price. If you wanted the faster 648MHz core clock, 4GB of GDDR5 RAM and 2125 GFLOPs of computing power, £1,070 was what you had to pay.

ASUS MARS II Review: GTX 580 SLI On One PCB

Asus has never been a company to shy away from offering over-the-top, custom products that command a price premium. Here's proof. Perhaps it's because the company is large enough, and thus, has the resources to cater to virtually all market segments, big or small. Or perhaps the top brass at Asus just likes inducing slack-jawed stares from PC enthusiasts. Whatever the reason, we hope they keep it up because testing this kind of stuff and showing it to you all is freakin' fun. A case-in-point is the Asus MARS II graphics card, which packs a full GeForce GTX 580, dual-GPU SLI configuration onto a single PCB. A quick glance at this monolith should reveal to even the most casual PC users that the MARS II is no ordinary graphics card. Heck, there isn't a single thing about the Asus MARS II, from its specs, to its sheer size, and its huge price tag, that can be considered mainstream. The MARS II is as over-the-top and as custom as they get and it's also going to be a limited edition, with only 999 cards slated for production. Luckily, one of those 999 cards (number 545 to be exact) found its way into the HH labs and we're able to give you the full scoop on this beast.
