ASUS M4A88TD-V EVO/USB3 Motherboard Review

Today I would like to introduce you to the ASUS M4A88TD-V EVO/USB3. Yes, that is a very long name but the board packs a punch equivalent to its mouthful of a model number. The M4A88TD-V EVO combines the 880G Northbridge with the proven SB850 Southbridge for a combination designed to kill. The 880G chipset is designed for mid range enchusiasts which want performance from their system without having to pay a premium for it. Some of the featuers the 880G chipset offers includes support for the latest AMD Phenom II and Athlon II processors, HyperTransport 3.0, ATI Stream Technology, Windows 7 support, and integrated graphics with DirectX 10.1 support. ASUS has packed on some of their own special features as well into this board such as ASUS's Xtreme Design technology, one click overclocking and instant-on Hybrid OS, you have the basis for a killer system. These technologies that ASUS has built their boards on make them one of the most stable and well performing board I have seen and hopefully the M4A88TD-V EVO/USB3 will continue on with that tradition. If I have you wanting to know more then let's dig in and take a better look at this motherboard.

ASUS M4A88TD-V EVO/USB3

Once again, ASUS has brought forward a very solid AMD motherboard at a very affordable price. The inclusion of the AMD 880G chipset allows for integrated Radeon HD 4250 graphics, as well as USB 3 and 6.0Gb/s SATA support, something most motherboards right now do not have. If current 890 chipset motherboards are too pricey or the wrong fit, the ASUS M4A88TD-V EVO/USB3 may be just what the doctor ordered. What would a huge list of features be without a little more detailed specifications table? Check out all of the technical specifications below. The packaging of the M4A88TD-V EVO/USB3 is similar to other ASUS motherboards in that it does a great job of showing the major features of the board on the front of the box. Though not as important when purchasing online, this is a great help to the millions of consumers who buy in a retail setting. A printed user guide and support DVD are included with the motherboard, as well as a case badge and Q-connectors for easy installation. Also in the box are four SATA cables (2 x 6Gb/s and 2 x 3Gb/s), a single PATA cable, and the Q-Shield.

Asus M4A88TD-V EVO review

Asus is the name, impossibly slick motherboards is the game. Even this modest M4A88TD-V Evo model is still quite a looker. For starters, like nearly all Asus boards it's immaculately arranged. Wherever possible, components are positioned in near-perfect little rows. It must make motherboard engineers from other companies weep onto their MOSFETs. Then there's the natty blue-and-black colour scheme and expensive heatsinks for the northbridge and voltage regulation circuitry. It's nearly enough to make you assume this is a fine board without dissecting the details or seeing the benchmarks. Nearly enough, but not quite. Not that the M4A88TD-V Evo doesn't stand up to close inspection. Asus has dropped in the SB850 southbridge rather than the older SB710 chip seen on some boards based on the AMD 880G chipset. Consequently, all five of the SATA ports are 6Gbps. Further adding to the big bandwidth cred is the NEC USB 3.0 chip pumping 500MB/s per port to two sockets on the rear panel. The only significant drawbacks involve graphics. The 880G's Radeon HD 4250 integrated GPU runs at 560MHz to the 890GX's 700MHz Radeon HD 4290 core.
