Not everyone needs the most high-powered beast of a laptop for their work. Sometimes it's better to opt for the affordable option, something with just enough 'oomph' to get you through the day. The Asus K53E comes in a number of flavours but the one we reviewed -- the SX123V -- packs an Intel Core i5 processor and 4GB of RAM. It comes with an affordable price tag of £440.It's available now from SaveOnLaptops, Dabs and Expansys. The K53E isn't beautiful enough to earn it a place in an art gallery, but it's not the most hideous laptop we've ever seen. The lid is a plain black affair but it has an unusual lined texture that just about manages to keep it the right side of boring. Boring little black number? Moi? Run your fingers along my unusual textured body. The plastic has a fair amount of flex to it, which is never a good sign. At least it feels like a thicker, more durable plastic than can be found on other machines. It could probably take a few knocks without cracking like the Grand Canyon. If you scratch your nails over it you'll hear a very plasticky sound. It's not going to win the build quality category if you're playing 'most luxurious laptop Top Trumps'. It's made of a thick, durable plastic that's unlikely to crack.
With its 15.6-inch display, dual-core Intel processor, and integrated graphics, the Asus K53E falls shy of our power and size criteria for inclusion in the desktop replacement category. But as all-purpose notebooks go, it's definitely on the beefy side, weighing in at 5.8 pounds and outfitted with a full-size keyboard and a dedicated numeric keypad. Although the K53E might not be a great companion for a daily commute and its performance is only so-so, its superior audio, good battery life, and modest price tag ($750 as of 6/14/2011) make it a model worth considering by those on a budget. Equipped with a 2.3GHz Intel Core i5-2410M CPU (a lower-end current-generation notebook processor); 6GB of DDR3 1333MHz DRAM; Intel high-definition integrated graphics; a 640GB, 5400-rpm hard drive; and the 64-bit version of Windows 7 Home Premium, the K53E-B1 earned a fair-to-middling PC WorldBench score of 112. By way of comparison, its chart-topping sibling (as of May 31), the Asus N53SV, scored 126--but with a Core i7-based configuration that costs $1000. The K53E's gaming scores were even worse, running less than half the frames per second of the N53SV at the same screen resolutions.
The K53E is ASUS' latest thin yet powerful 15.6-inch multimedia and general purpose consumer notebook. It features the latest Intel "Sandy Bridge" processors and a large 640GB hard drive. The second-generation Intel Core i5 processor should be able to tackle nearly any task without breaking a sweat, whether that be general Internet surfing or video encoding. Build and DesignThe K53E looks slim chassis at about 1.4" at the highest point. It's also very light for a notebook this size at 5.27 lbs. The palm rest area and lid of the notebook are aluminum, which has a dark copper-colored finish. It looks great and the hue changes depending on the light. The lid is more of a dark gray-colored aluminum. The use of glossy plastic for the screen surround was not the best idea, as it is far too easy to smudge up. Combined with the glossy display surface, it is difficult to keep clean.
Sleek looks, top-notch performance, and very good battery life--all for less than $749. The Asus K53-B1 is ready to go toe-to-toe with the best multimedia notebooks you can buy for under a grand. Equipped with a second-generation Core i5 processor, 6GB of RAM, 640GB of storage, and the latest Intel HD graphics, this machine has a lot to offer. Should the ASUS K53E be at the top of your shopping list? Read our review to find out.The ASUS K53E looks very good inside and out. The scover is finely textured plastic with a dark bronze finish and a chrome ASUS logo front and center. No matter if you're a student in class or a professional in a board meeting, the subtle pinstripe look will blend in pretty well with either surrounding. The finish holds up well to fingerprints, with the etched grooves breaking up any smudges before they become readily visible. On the inside of the K53 ASUS uses brushed metal for the palmrest and keyboard trim, keeping the same color scheme, albeit a lighter shade of bronze. The palmrest wasn't as smudge-resistant as the lid, collecting plenty of finger prints after a heavy day of typing.
