Asus G74SX review

If you're after a machine to play Battlefield 3, Skyrim and Modern Warfare 3, look no further. The Asus G74S is a mammoth gaming laptop, which has the power to play all the latest titles, and while you might not get as much for your money when compared with full form desktops, it's up there with the best. Buying a gaming laptop offers fantastic pay offs in terms of space and portability. If you don't have room for a hulking desktop system, or like to have the option of taking your laptop away from your home, the Asus G74S is perfect. The G74S is a whopping 17.3" and features a full HD screen, which makes games look great. The screen is matte, so no pesky reflections will ruin your experience. While this technology takes the life out of images, the full 1920 x 1080 resolution keeps things looking great, and is just as adept at playing movies too. Bright and beautiful The panel is stunningly bright – great for gaming in dark rooms, and it's also 3D-enabled, using Nvidia's 3D Vision active-shutter technology. This means the panel has super-swift refresh rates, which makes day-to-day tasks feel snappier too. It's one of the slickest integrations of 3D tech we've seen, and with the receiver built into the body of the G74S, there was no fuss getting it working.

Asus G74SX-A2

After a season of wafer-thin ultrabooks and pocket-sized ultraportables, there's nothing quite like a giant desktop-replacement gaming rig. Despite making a name for itself with the original Eee PC Netbook and the new Zenbook, Asus has always had a solid line of gaming laptops (sometimes marketed under the "Republic of Gamers" subbrand), the latest of which is the G74SX-A2. While that jumble of letters and numbers may not be very illuminating, the system it refers to is a strong performer that has the added benefit of not looking like the typical ugly gaming laptop. The $1,949 G74SX is an angular black box, and its muted matte finish helps it from feeling as massive as it actually is. These days, two grand is really an astronomical amount to pay for a laptop, and generally only Apple gets away with charging that much. In this case, you do get some serious hardware for the money, including a quad-core 2.0GHz Intel Core i7-2630QM CPU, an Nvidia GeForce GTX 560M GPU, a 160GB solid-state drive (SSD) coupled with a 750GB hard-disk drive (HDD), and a whopping 16GB of RAM.

Laptop Reviews: Compare PC and Mac Laptops and Netbooks

The G74SX is part of the Asus Republic of Gamers (or RoG for the initiated) series. It's a gamer-oriented laptop, with impressive performance in a 17.3-inch design but remains reasonably priced all the same. It's nice to see gamer machines that don't light up like a jukebox. Even the RoG logo looks discreet. This is something we had already remarked on with the G53SX, one of the 15.6-inch models in the range. Although its chassis isn't exactly the same as that used for the 15.6-inch previously tested here - especially when it comes to the expulsion of hot air - both models do have a matte black shell that gives them a nice robust feel. The finish could do with a little work. The palm rest, with its soft coating, and the keyboard unfortunately sink in slightly when you press down on them. While this is by no means a major problem, it does somewhat spoil the overall feeling of quality. Again, this is something we also remarked on with the G53SX. Looking at the keyboard, the 17-inch chassis has the advantage of not imposing any restrictions when it comes to the size of keys when a numberpad is added. The G74SX therefore has well-proportioned and well-positioned keys. Once again, however, keying is a bit too soft, something for Asus to improve on in future generations.

Asus G74SX-A2

The newest entry in the Asus Republic of Gamers line-up, the G74SX-A2 ($2,000 street), offers plenty of productive features and fun entertainment options, but it's a gaming rig first and foremost. And if its chassis' imposing form factor doesn't do it for you, then its backlit keyboard, 1080p screen, stealthy cooling system, and dual hard drives will. Its Core i7 CPU and Nvidia GTX GPU is a deadly combination to any who may oppose you on the gaming grid, holding its own against some of the best gaming laptops around. However, its parts weren't enough to best our Editors' Choice the Alienware M17X (Sandy Bridge) ($2,254 direct, 4.5 stars), which churned out playable frame rates on even the highest game settings, whereas the G74SX-A2 could not. There's nothing small about the Asus G74SX-A2, from its big 17-inch screen (2.4 by 16.5 by 12.8-inches, HWD) to its over-sized keyboard. Its 9.7 pound weight is on par with other gaming laptops like the 9.8-pound Alienware M17X (Sandy Bridge), but nowhere near the backbreaking 13.3 pounds of the AVADirect Clevo X7200 ($4,957.64 direct, 3.5 stars). Still, the G74SX-A2 isn't built for portability outside of changing its resting location within your house.

ASUS G74SX-A2 Review

ASUS' newest powerhouse, the 17-inch G74SX-A2, looks like the kind of rig that gamers' dreams are made of. It's equipped with a powerful quad-core Intel Core i7 processor, 16GB of RAM, a discrete Nvidia GeForce graphics chip with 3GB of RAM, and two hard drives, one of which is an SSD. Still, when a laptop is priced north of $2,000, most gamers want to make sure they are getting a quality machine that can handle today's--and tomorrow's--most intensive games. So does the G74SX offer the best bang for your gaming buck? With the G74SX-A2, ASUS has once again drawn inspiration from a stealth vehicle. But unlike the stealth fighter-inspired G73SW and G73Jh, the design of the G74SX-A2 was inspired by the US Navy's Sea Shadow stealth ship, which is evident in the system's sleek, sculpted angles and menacing black color scheme. The lid of the G74SX-A2 is covered in a soft-touch rubberized material that feels smooth, resists finger print smudes, and provides an overall sense of quality. Below the inlaid silver ASUS logo is ASUS' Republic of Gamers logo. Around back you'll find the G74SX-A2's most defining feature, two oversize fan vents that span nearly the entire width of the unit. Surrounded with chrome accents, the vents are clearly made to stand out, and they certainly do.
