ASUS G53SX 15.6-inch Gaming Notebook Review

There once was a time when it'd take the sale of your car in order to fund a notebook capable of real gaming. Fortunately, things have been vastly improved since then, with even $1,000 gaming offerings today proving suitable for most people. The ASUS model we're taking a look at here is a bit pricier than that, at about $1,249, but as we'll soon see, it's packed with high-performance hardware, a gorgeous screen and a smart design - resulting in the best gaming notebook I've ever had the pleasure to test. Before we get into the nitty gritty, it's worth pointing out that ASUS, like many other notebook vendors, doesn't offer just one version of a particular notebook. Certain models include smaller hard drives, less RAM or a faster processor, and of the four models I've seen, they've ranged in price from $1,000 to $1,499. So, depending on your budget, you do have a bit of flexibility when purchasing a G53. With its G53 series, ASUS has set out to give gamers the option of having a fully capable notebook without breaking the bank. There's no dual-GPU configurations here, or SSDs, or RAID or anything that would be considered high-end, and that's to keep prices affordable.

Asus G53SX

Asus's G53SX proves that you don't need to spend a ton of money to get a decent gaming machine--if you don't mind toting around an 8-pound monster. The G53SX is the perfect desktop-replacement-size all-purpose machine for gamers: it packs excellent performance in an enormous case, and is just portable enough for you to carry with you to your local LAN party. Our review model, priced at $1250 (as of November 9, 2011), came packed with a second-gen Intel Core i7-2630QM processor, 12GB of RAM (upgradable to 16GB), a 750GB hard drive, and an Nvidia GeForce GTX 560M graphics card with 2GB of video memory. This hulking machine also features built-in Wi-Fi, built-in Bluetooth, a full-HD (1920-by-1080-pixel) display, and the 64-bit version of Windows 7 Home Premium. Our test model performed very well for its class, with a WorldBench 6 score of 140. The MainGear EX-L 15, with a mark of 142, is the only all-purpose laptop to have scored higher. And the EX-L 15 costs almost twice as much as the G53SX. The Asus laptop's graphics performance is good. In our Far Cry 2 tests, it sustained a frame rate of 38 frames per second (at high quality settings, and 1920 by 1080 pixel resolution).

Laptop Reviews: Compare PC and Mac Laptops and Netbooks

Straight out the Republic of Gamers series (RoG for those in the know), here we have the Asus G53SX. It's a gamer-oriented laptop, with impressive performance in a compact 15.6-inch design. Whether you look on the hood, the main body or the sides, you won't see any brightly coloured diodes on this one. Even the RoG range logo is discreetly placed. Finally, a gamer machine for adults! Black matte all over, the G53SX has a robust feel. Curve-lovers beware, Asus has gone for something very well defined. The finish could do with a little work. The palm rest, with its soft coating, and the keyboard unfortunately sink in when you press down on them. This isn't a deal breaker but does take away somewhat from what is a quality machine. The keyboard and the number pad use the chiclet (separated keys) design. Asus has had to reduce the size of the number keys to fit them all onto the chassis. An excellent solution, we reckon, because the rest of the keyboard, which gets a lot more use than the numberpad, is unaffected. Overall, the keys are well-positioned and allow you to do your word processing comfortably. The keying may however be slightly soft for some. The multitouch touchpad is, as often, under-sized but otherwise nice enough to use.
