Product Survey: Laptops

Asus continues its progress on the laptop PC gamer market and certainly isn't afraid to innovate. The G51J 3D is the first notebook with NVIDIA 3D Vision. Performance is also pretty good with high-end components under the bonnet. According to Asus, we'll be getting full immersion: once more unto the breach! Gamer laptop PCs are very often garishly designed. Fortunately, the G51J 3D doesn't go too far in this direction and retains an aesthetic that should appeal to most. The glossy black around the keyboard and screen is mixed with matte black that's rubbery and nice and soft to the touch. Only the design of its hood, glossy blue with a sort of white flame betrays its gamer origins. The finish is excellent and overall it has a good, solid feel about it. The has separated keys (15 x 15 mm). Backlit (3 levels of brightness), it has good comfort of use, solid, quiet and pleasant keying. There's a number pad on the right hand side, which can be useful for office doc work. Above the keyboard, 3 buttons allow you to activate 3D Vision, move between different performance modes and disactivate the touchpad. The is very comfortable to use in spite of being pretty standard in size (76 x 47 mm).

Asus G51J 3D Review

We review the first notebook capable of delivering realistic 3d visuals, the Asus G51J 3D gaming laptop. Stereoscopic viewing is mere months away from exploding—or seeping, depending on one’s level of zeal and optimism—into our living rooms via new 3-D televisions from mainstream manufacturers like Sony and Panasonic. However, stereoscopic technology has been around for a while now in the computer space, thanks to graphics manufacturer Nvidia’s excellent 3D Vision solution. Thing is, it’s only been viable on desktops until now.Asus’ G51J 3D changes that by wrapping a 3-D-enabled 120-Hertz display, NVIDIA’s active shutter glasses and a supported graphics card, drivers, and software, into a single package. It’s 3-D ready, right out of the box.As a member of Asus’ “Republic of Gamers” line of gaming laptops, the G51J 3D is predictably flashy looking, with glowing lights lining its sides and what looks to be a claw mark etched into its black-and-navy lid. It’s not too gaudy, but by the same token, it’s not necessarily the sort of machine one would feel comfortable taking out at a serious business meeting. It’s also a bit bulky. Despite its average-sized 15.6-inch screen, it measures 1.6-inches thick and tips the scales at 7.7 pounds.

Asus G51J-3D

We've been very impressed with Nvidia's 3D Vision technology, which renders most games in pretty impressive 3D, but it requires an investment in compatible hardware, including a 120Hz LCD monitor, approved desktop GPU with dual-link DVI connection, and a pair of battery powered 3D glasses with a USB IR emitter. Asus is the first PC maker to incorporate these hardware requirements into a laptop, and the result is an impressive package that makes 3D PC gaming more practical by incorporating the 120Hz display and compatible GPU into a portable all-in-one package. The $1,699 system also includes a pair of Nvidia's 3D glasses and the IR emitter that normally sells separately for about $200. Unlike Acer's attempt at a 3D laptop (which used entirely different technology), this system is up to the task with an Intel Core i7 processor and decent Nvidia graphics card. In fact, it's such a powerful system that we're a little disappointed it tops out with a 15.6-inch screen (and with only a 1,366x768-pixel resolution). That's not ideal for high-end gaming, and keeps this from being a go-to gaming laptop, 3D element aside. Typical for an Asus gaming laptop, the G51J-3D features a black, matte/glossy design with a few gamer-friendly graphical touches on the lid. It's big and bulky for a mainstream-size laptop, so you're not going to be carting this to the coffee shop.

ASUS G51J 3D

Would you don a pair of high-tech shades to add an extra dimension to your gameplay? As the first notebook with Nvidia’s 3D Vision technology, the ASUS G51J 3D makes hundreds of titles pop off the 3D screen, from Batman: Arkham Asylum to World of Warcraft. While this $1,699 notebook lacks the full HD display and blistering frame rates of its more affordable brother, the G51J-A1, it offers a more immersive 3D experience than Acer’s 5738DG 3D laptop. If they’re willing to wait for other types of 3D content to become available, such as movies and Web videos, consumers who want to be the first to get their hands (and eyes) on what could be the next evolution in gaming would do well to consider the G51J 3D. Like the ASUS G51Vx and G51J-A1, the G51J 3D sports a glossy blue lid and is adorned with a backlit ASUS Republic Of Gamers logo. There is also a light bar located on the lower portion on the lid. Taken as a whole, these touches tell you that this is a serious gaming rig. When we lifted the lid of the 14.6 x 10.3 x 1.6-inch system, our eyes were treated to a highly attractive interior.
