Asus Eee PC Seashell 1015PE review

Asus pioneered the netbook in 2007 and its Eee PC range has since grown by a staggering scale. While the Eee PC Seashell 1015PE adds little to the basic netbook concept, its unique features, great usability and ample storage make it easy to recommend. The chassis looks impressively high end for such a low-priced machine, finished in sleek matt-black plastic. While the finish attracts fingerprints, it is easily cleaned. The resilient build quality is also more than tough enough for frequent travel use. Despite being one of the larger netbooks on the market, the 1.3kg chassis remains suitably slim and portable. Powered by a 6-cell battery, we were able to work for almost eight hours on the move – a great result, but slightly bettered by the Acer Aspire One D260 and Packard Bell Bell Dot S. Chiclet keyboard Asus was one of the first to use an isolation-style (or 'Chiclet') keyboard on a netbook and the feature is well implemented here. While the keys are smaller than those of the Acer Aspire One D260, the spacious design and firmly fixed board ensure comfortable typing. As with the Acer, a large touchpad is also in place. Perfectly mirroring the wide aspect ratio of the 10.1-inch screen, the wide pad makes it easy to manoeuvre onscreen.

Netbook Reviews: Compare Ultraportable PCs

After a convincing Eee PC 1005PE, Asus is pursuing the development of its range of 10-inch netbooks. The Asus Eee PC 1015PE aims to give even longer battery life and more ease of use. It has a wider touchpad and a high-capacity battery. It also retains the matte panel that made its predecessor so successful. Entirely in black, the Asus Eee PC 1015PE won't stand out from other netbooks, in terms of design. Very standard. Surely we're over the glossy black hood by now! Rapidly covered with dust and fingerprints! The screen surround is similar and is unfortunately subject to small scratches. It is however a coherent design overall, relatively sobre and well-finished. We like the soft feel of the wrist rest, which makes it comfortable to use and it stays cleaner than a glossy surface. It's a shame this material wasn't used for the whole computer. The 1015PE's with separated keys (14 x 13 mm) is very nice to use. Supple and relatively quiet, it offers nice ease of use but is penalised by the fact that the "Ctrl" and "Shift" (capital) keys are so small. The (multi-touch) is made of the same soft material as the wrist rest.
