When the ASUS Eee PC 1008HA Seashell first launched, it impressed us with its thin design and above-average performance. Now updated with Windows 7 Home Premium, a larger 320GB hard drive, twice the RAM, and a suite of ASUS-branded extras, the 1008HA is still a svelte and stylish netbook. However, a dip in endurance—plus an increase in price to $479—may have consumers either opting to pick up the Windows XP version (while they can still find it) or paying just a bit more for a more powerful Intel ULV ultraportable. With the Eee PC 1008HA Seashell, ASUS created a streamlined netbook. Overall, the system has a sharp, clean design, largely due to the curved panels that extend over its edges to hide its ports. The glossy black lid (also available in white; blue and pink will come later this year) is covered in a new Infusion finish that allows the 1008HA to be scratch resistant; but it’s far from fingerprint-proof, so you’ll want to keep a cloth handy. Where the 1008HA really stands out from other netbooks on the market is in its svelte profile and light weight. Measuring 10.3 x 7.0 x 1.0 inches, the 1008HA is a little thinner than netbooks like the Toshiba mini NB205, but newer models, such as the HP Mini 5101 (and the impossibly thin Sony VAIO X) are thinner still.
For its Eee PC Seashell series, Asus claims to have been inspired by one of nature’s most beautiful creations: seashells. From this starting point, Asus have created an elegant and functional series. The range is headed up by this very light 1008HA: 1.1 Kg. It has more or less the same components as the 1000HE, so how is this model any different? Asus has held true in terms of the finesse of the product. There is a noticeable difference in volume with the 1000HE or even the 1005HA. A second point differentiates it from the smaller 1005HA: traps for the connectors. To reinforce the hermetic look of the product, Asus had gone for traps to put BSB sockets and other connectivity behind, which adds to the overall aesthetic. The keyboard takes up almost the entire available surface. The keys are wide and comfortable to use. The arrows bottom right are very particularly shaped. The top and bottom arrow keys are arranged within one key’s space. The multitouch touchpad is built into the casing. Its surface is demarcated by a series of small bumps and extends over a 6.5 x 3 cm area. Under it, a shiny, metal monobloc bar gives you access to right and left clicks.
Strip away the plastic shell, aluminum cladding and Chiclet-style keys, and every netbook boils down to almost exactly the same hardware. They all seem to share about 90 percent of their DNA – which is why many companies are starting to look past the stagnant hardware inside and turning to the outside as a way to stand out. Asus already joined the party with the fashion-savvy S101, then with the metal-clad 1002HA, and now continues its quest for thin with the 1008HA Seashell. It may not pull anything unusual under the hood, but super-slim dimensions and a sleek shell make it one of the most lust-worthy netbooks we’ve laid eyes on. Asus’ flowery ad copy and photos that show the computer nestled into sugary beach sand suggest that its shape was inspired by seashells, but make no mistake about it: Apple’s MacBook Air was the real inspiration here. The machine’s emphasis on depth (it measures only an inch thick) and gradually tapered edges both call to mind that original innovator in ultra-slim notebooks. That’s not a bad thing, though: The scalloped edges help make it look more organic, create the impression that it’s even thinner than it is, and in an unforeseen benefit, make it easier to scoop off a table with one hand.
Asus's next netbook might make you look twice. It's sexy, it's white--but it's not a Mac. It's thin, sleek, and light, and at least one Macworld editor is eyeballing it with interest. Nevertheless, the Asus Eee PC 1008HA netbook is no MacBook. Asus seems to be spitting out new additions to its netbook line faster than I can count. (Who can forget the Asus Eee PC 1000HE, the Asus Eee PC 1000H 80G XP, and the Asus Eee PC T91? It ain't easy, since all three came out in the past six months or so.) Nevertheless, the company's designers continue to find ways to refine their machines. The proof is in this new $420 (as of May 26, 2009) netbook. Under its frosty exterior, the system sports up-to-the-minute netbook innards: an Intel Atom N280 CPU, 1GB of RAM, a 160GB hard drive, Bluetooth, 802.11n, and a three-cell battery (we're still awaiting battery life test results from the PC World Test Center). The keyboard is 92 percent of full size, with a good layout, and it feels big and comfortable. The buttons were firm and large enough to type on easily. Even the metallic mouse-button bar was reasonably secure--and I especially like Asus's treatment of the touchpad. Instead of using dainty trim or a different material to indicate that you're within the strike zone, this model incorporates tiny bumps.
