ASUS Eee PC 1005PR

Just as there are many paths up the mountain, there’s more than one way to build a multimedia-friendly netbook. Nvidia’s Ion changed how consumers looked at netbooks last year. But now chip maker Broadcom promises a superior HD experience over the typical Pine Trail/integrated graphics solution inside most netbooks for a more wallet-friendly price. Given ASUS’ notorious penchant for bringing out a new Eee PC model more often than NBC changes late-night hosts, it’s no surprise that they’ve given the Crystal HD Decoder a spin in its newest netbook, the $399 1005PR Seashell. Unfortunately, a medicore keyboard nearly spoils the fun.Editors’ Note:Portions of this review were taken from our earlier review of the Eee PC 1005PE-P.As the newest member of ASUS’ Seashell line, the 1005PR shares the same tapered lines, rounded edges, and slim chassis as the 1005HA and 1001P, among other recent Eee PC models. Available in four colors—black, white, pink and dark blue—this 10.3 x 7 x 1.4 inch netbook benefits from a matte outer shell and a fingerprint-resistant checkered pattern on the lid. This adds a touch of style to an already elegant design, making the 1005PR fashionable without being loud.

Asus EeePC 1005PR

Netbooks aren't known for their smooth playback of high definition video. Manufacturers have found a solutions to this problem, by either using an Nvidia-based chipset (Ion) or a hardware decoder chip made by Broadcom. The Asus EeePC 1005PR ($400 street) uses the latter and complements it with a 1,366 by 768 resolution screen. Only a handful of netbooks support the Broadcom solution, namely the Dell Inspiron Mini 10s (HD) ($425 Direct, ) and HP Mini 5102 ($400 Direct, ), with the 1005PR being the cheapest. It's worth looking into if you watch a lot of HD or are sick of Web pages being cut-off abruptly at the bottom. Like the Asus EeePC 1001P ($300 Street, ), the 1005PR has a tapered front, and the back is thick enough to conceal the 6-cell battery. It uses the same matte-finish plastic cover as the 1001P, complete with the checkered pattern and fabric-like texture. Matte finishes are better equipped to hide scratches and finger prints. Shiny plastics, as in the ones found in the Acer Aspire 532h-2268 ($300 Street, ) and Lenovo IdeadPad S12 (Ion) ($650 Direct, ), are magnets for these unsightly smudges. Aluminum metals offer both pleasing design and smudge protection, and can be found in netbooks like the HP Mini 5102 and the Nokia Booklet 3G ($600 Street, ).

Asus EeePC 1005PR

Now that Asus has a solid entry in the basic $299 category with the Eee PC 1001P (previous entry-level Eee PCs were closer to $350), it's time to see what the company that essentially created the Netbook market can do with a reasonably priced premium model. For $399 you get the 1005PR, a nearly identical-looking Eee PC with an Intel Atom N450 processor, 1GB of RAM, and Windows 7 Starter--but also upgraded with a 1,366x768-pixel resolution 10-inch display, a 250GB hard drive, and a Broadcom HD video accelerator. To be honest, we'd rather have Nvidia's Ion GPU, which adds some basic gaming muscle to its video capabilities, but as the current version of Ion is essentially locked out of most Netbooks (it's starting to show up in a handful of models with 2GB of RAM and Windows 7 Home Premium), this is about as good a Netbook deal as you're likely to find for $399. Asus definitely knows how to make solid, reliable Netbooks, and this version keeps the excellent slim profile and wide keyboard of other Eee PCs (although the touch pad and mouse buttons are in need of an update).
