Asus Eee PC 1001P

Asus and its Eee PC have always been at the forefront of Netbook development. After all, the company practically invented the market, and virtually owned it for some time, as Dell, HP, and others dithered over whether to get into Netbooks at all. Asus also makes some of the best Netbooks, with excellent battery life, good keyboards and touchpads, and higher-end models with dual-core CPUs and Nvidia's Ion GPU. One thing Asus hasn't had is a simple, solid Netbook at the magic $299 price. Most of the company's basic models have come in just above that, at $350 or so, while upstarts such as Acer have been able to swoop in and capture entry-level customers. To put it another way, if you're looking for a Netbook with the standard loadout of an Intel N450 CPU, 1GB of RAM, Windows 7 Starter, and a 160GB hard drive, there's no reason to pay more than $299 for it. That's why we're pleased that the Eee PC 1001P hits all those marks for $299, giving Asus an entry level Netbook that doesn't cost any more than the competition. Even better, it doesn't feel or look especially cheap, and even though it uses a slightly older version of the Asus keyboard and touchpad, it's just as good as any nonpremium Netbook (such as models with HD displays or video accelerator ships) we've used.

ASUS Eee PC 1001P SeaShell Review

The Eee PC 1001P SeaShell is ASUS's new entry-level netbook offering the Intel Atom N450 processor and Intel GMA 3150 integrated graphics. Designed closely after its higher-class brother, the 1005PE, the 1001P offers many of the same features, minus the Chiclet-style keyboard, larger battery, and larger hard drive. In this review, we see how the 1001P stacks up against other netbooks and if it holds a candle to the more expensive 1005PE. Observant readers might notice that this review is similar to the Eee PC 1005PE's review. This is because the 1001P shares many of the same components with its predecessor. The Eee PC 1001P is a lower-cost version of the 1005PE Seashell and features a similar clamshell chassis but offers different lid designs. Our 1001P model comes with a textured weave pattern imprinted on the screen cover. The 1001P lacks some of the 1005PE's glossy flair, and its stylish island keyboard, but overall still retains a simple yet modern look. At the top of the 1001P, it's easy to see the "SeaShell" heritage, and thankfully it manages to retain some solid build quality for a budget netbook.

ASUS Eee PC 1001P

When it comes to netbooks, a lot of progress has been made in terms of design, usability, and performance. But for customers who want to spend the least amount possible, there haven’t been many compelling choices. That’s why we like the ASUS Eee PC 1001P. At $299, not only is this machine $50 to $100 less expensive than many netbooks, but it looks the part of a luxury netbook while lasting more than 8 hours on a charge. You give up some of the features of the more premium ASUS Eee PC 1005PE-P (Seashell), such as 802.11n wireless, but for those on a tight budget the 1001P is a very good choice.Hailing from ASUS’ Seashell line, the 1001P looks practically identical to the 1005PE-P. Though less svelte than the inch-thick 1008HA, the 1001P has similar curved panels and a sharp look. Instead of a glossy lid that attracts fingerprints, the 1001P has a white lid (also available in black) with a textured checkerboard pattern of tiny concentric squares. This matte lid keep smudges at bay, and it makes the 1001P look more expensive than its price suggests. The same pattern extends onto the keyboard deck, which is also white; however, the bezel is still a glossy black.
