Asus Transformer Prime Android 4.0 update coming in January?

By TechRadar, published 14-12-2011

January looks set to be the month of the Ice Cream Sandwich update and the Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime is just one of the bevy of devices that will be getting its Ice Cream Sandwich upgrade in the new year. Internal sources at Asus have confirmed to Digital Versus that Android 4.0 will be making its way to the much-anticipated tablet-cum-notebook in early 2012, although the Transformer Prime will initially ship with Android 3.2 (Gingerbread – festively apt). The Asus Transformer Prime UK release date is still under some contention however, with Q1 of 2012 looking the most likely for us Brits, so sadly there'll be no swanky 4.5 star-rated Android tablet under the Christmas tree. But if it means that we'll get the Transformer Prime with Ice Cream Sandwich out of the box, then we'll be ha...

GTAIII: Anniversary Edition goes mobile December 15

By GameSpot, published 12-06-2011

Rockstar readying updated release of PS2 open-world crime game for Android and iOS platforms; $5 price point confirmed.   The PlayStation 2's seminal Grand Theft Auto III turned 10 years old in October, and developer Rockstar celebrated the anniversary by confirming it would be bringing the open-world crime game to mobile platforms. Rockstar followed that up today with more specific details, confirming that Grand Theft Auto III: 10 Year Anniversary Edition will be coming to Android and iOS on December 15 for $5. A picture of GTAIII's sociopathic protagonist Claude, appropriately enough on the Android. The mobile port of GTAIII isn't the only Rockstar recognition of the game's anniversary. The company is also peddling a $150 limited-edition Claude action...

Review: Sony Tablet P

By TechRadar, published 29-11-2011

OverviewThis time last year - when the Tablet P wasn't even a twinkle in Sony's eye - we were weeping into a mound of rubbish iPad rip-offs, begging for sweet release from our tiresome lives. Every week we saw yet more rectangular lumps of plastic, fit only for use as door wedges. They ran outdated versions of Google's Android operating system, designed for the humble smartphone, so the blocky desktops and stretched-out apps looked truly horrendous. But just as we were headed to the bathtub with our toasters, two miraculous things happened. First, Google released Android Honeycomb - a slick, tablet-oriented version of its mobile operating system. And second, manufacturers started paying attention to the slew of negative reviews and actually started producing decent devices. The excellent Sam...

Tackling the Tablet Conundrum: Which One is Right For You?

By MaximumPC, published 21-11-2011

Do you even need a tablet? If so, which one? We review the current crop of tablet mainstays. We explain the hardware and OS features that matter the most. Follow along as we unravel what tablets are actually good for. When a consumer electronics category confuses the masses, it’s usually because the technology is hard to understand on a fundamental level. Have you ever tried to explain texture fill rates to your GPU-ignorant brother-in-law? Or RAID levels to your mom—who shouldn’t even be asking about RAID in the first place? Videocards and storage devices can confuse the lay consumer, but at least the prospective hardware buyer usually knows he or she needs a videocard or storage device in the first place. Your game won’t play at a high resolution? A new videocard is probably the...

But Android 3.2 is currently the main OS rival to the iPad, and the products are creeping onto the shelves one by one.Follow our tablets channel: @TR_TabletsWe've gone from zero Android tablets to stacks of the things in a very short space of time, and inevitably some are better than others. Some have ten-inch screens, others seven, and there are big dif...

Week in Tech: Tablets 2.0: time for the next gen?

By TechRadar, published 11-11-2011

It's been an exciting week for Android fans: we've seen the shape of things to come, and it's a vehicle. That's what Gary Marshall reckons, anyway: according to him, the new Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime eschews me-too design "and turns into a truck".It doesn't really, but its blockbuster movie branding doesn't stop with references to robots in disguise: the Transformer Prime also boasts a Superman-inspired Kal-El processor, better known as a Tegra 3.That delivers not one, not two, but four cores (and an extra secret one), and its 12-core GPU should deliver exceptionally tasty graphics performance. It's the first time we've seen a tablet rocking the Tegra 3, and despite its impressive engine the Transformer Prime remains super-slim - it's just 8.3mm thick - and marginally lighter th...

Read on to check out all this week's reviews from TechRadar.Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 reviewSamsung's attitude to the tablet market has been to throw so much mud at the Android wall that at least some of it sticks. Review: Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9

By TechRadar, published 27-10-2011

Overview The Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 is one of the best tablets yet released.Taking a lesson from the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 and adding a few features beyond what the Apple iPad 2 offers, this thin, light and longer-lasting tablet is the best option around if you're more interested in portability than in playing games and watching movies on a 10-inch screen. The slightly smaller size is also a better fit for reading books, browsing the web and checking email. Some might wonder why this model even exists. After all, there's a slew of 7-inch tablets available, including the Acer Iconia Tab A100, the BlackBerry PlayBook and even the Cisco Cius, which is coming to the UK. At its 8.9-inch size, the Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 fits somewhere between those 'too small for movies' 7-inch tabs and the larg...

Review: Asus Eee Pad Slider

By TechRadar, published 25-10-2011

Overview and designWe were totally taken by the Eee Pad Transformer when it came out because it did something different to the iPad, and so gave itself room to breathe away from the tablet big guns. Now its brother, the Asus Eee Pad Slider has arrived, and manages to stand out in much the same way.The specs are fairly typical for tablets these days. The Eee Pad Slider features a 1GHz Nvidia Tegra 2 system-on-a-chip, offering dual-core power and good graphics performance, which powers Android 3.1 out of the box (though you can upgrade to 3.2 as soon as you get it connected to the internet, and an Android 4.0 update is on its way). There's 1GB of RAM to keep multitasking smooth, along with 16GB or 32GB of internal storage, though a microSD card slot means you can boost this. Wi-Fi is present u...

Rockstar Marking GTA III's Anniversary With iOS, Android Releases And Claude Figure

By GameInformer, published 13-10-2011

Here's another installment of "Things to Make You Feel Old." Ten years ago this month, Rockstar Games released Grand Theft Auto III. After you pop your dentures back in, see how the studio plans to commemorate the milestone. First, Rockstar is releasing the game on the iPad 2 and iPhone 4S, as well as a variety of Android devices.* GTA III brought sandbox games to the masses and ushered in a host of imitators. It's nice to see it land on contemporary hardware, even if it means players will have to slide their fingers on glass instead of gripping a PS2 controller. It's playable at New York Comic-Con, too, so check it out at Rockstar's booth if you're in the area. Otherwise, you can wait for its fall release. If the idea of playing a game like that without butt...

GTAIII turns 10, coming to mobile devices

By GameSpot, published 13-10-2011

The anniversary edition of Grand Theft Auto III arrives for phones and tablets this autumn, along with a Claude action figure.   Grand Theft Auto maker Rockstar has announced a mobile version of its influential, 10-year-old sandbox adventure game Grand Theft Auto III. The 10th anniversary edition handheld version will hit "select" Apple and Android devices this autumn; these include the iPad 2, iPhone 4S, Samsung Galaxy S2, and Asus Iconia tablet. The commemorative Claude doll. The full list of compatible gadgets (see below) suggests a mobile game with relatively high hardware demands. Apple iOS devices older than the iPad 2 and the new iPhone (that is, with the Apple A5 chip) will not play it. To commemorate the 10th anniversary of the Liberty City...

Samsung Series 5 3G Chromebook Review

By MaximumPC, published 09-02-2011

'Nothing but the web' is attractive, but hard to justify Update: Since this review was written for the September 2011 magazine, Google has rolled out a ChromeOS update that enables Netflix playback and VPN (though not Cisco AnyConnect) support.  If you’ve used the Chrome web browser, you’ve used Chrome OS. Google’s latest netbook operating system is little more than a very, very thin client underneath the Chrome browser, and a Chromebook is a netbook-like object that runs Chrome OS instead of a full Windows or Linux-based operating system. Chromebooks have finally hit retail (in the form of sleek netbooks from Samsung and Acer), and it’s time to find out whether “nothing but the web” is enough computer for anyone. The Samsung Series 5 Chromebook is well constructed. T...

By TechRadar, published 27-08-2011

This week's hottest reviews on TechRadarThis week has been a bumper week for kit on TechRadar - it's hardly been a slow week for news, either. We've got the pocket 3D camcorder, the Sony Bloggie 3D, the Panasonic DMC-FZ48 with a super 24x lens. Also from Panasonic is the 65-inch Panasonic's TX-P65VT30.And then there's the updated Sony Xperia Mini - a diminutive Android handset, HTC Evo 3D plus much more besides.Sony Bloggie 3D reviewThe Sony Bloggie 3D MHS-FS3 certainly isn't cheap, but then this is a distinctly premium point-and-shoot video recorder. The obvious draw is simple, hassle-free 3D recording and playback, with an easy way to trim and upload the footage. But it's not just a one-trick, three-dimensional pony; there's a good range of 2D recording options too, including 1080p, so So...

Portal developer's next game debuting at PAX

By GameSpot, published 23-08-2011

Square Enix and Airtight Games showing off Kim Swift's next project during Saturday panel at Seattle-based gaming convention.   The question of how one makes a follow-up to the breakout 2007 hit Portal has already been answered once, as Valve released Portal 2 to critical acclaim earlier this year. It will be answered a second time this week, as Square Enix has confirmed that it will be debuting the next game from Portal lead developer Kim Swift at this year's Penny Arcade Expo. Swift's follow-up to Portal is billed as "fascinating and quirky." Square Enix has a Saturday panel scheduled in which Swift and the rest of the Airtight Games development team will present their game, which the publisher is describing as "incredibly fascinating and quirky." 3D gaming: what the future holds

By TechRadar, published 29-06-2011

Where next for stereoscopic 3D gaming? And, by extension, what is that first properly 3D game - that title that will be the benchmark for all the subsequent 3D games to follow - going to be like? These are vital, timely questions for hardcore gamers and games developers alike, as a familiar haze of cynical disinterestedness settles over the first batch of 3D games on PC and PlayStation 3.Indeed, a recent report claims that, despite the concerted push from the TV and display industry to leverage 3D as an added-value feature on your new telly or PC monitor, many users will still rarely watch or play with 3D content in future.Informa Telecoms & Media claims that, despite 3D soon set to become a default feature on our TVs and PC monitors, 3D TV will not be a mainstream success, with less than h...

Review Roundup: This week's hottest reviews on TechRadar

By TechRadar, published 18-06-2011

This week we've got a full review of Samsung's new tablet, the 10.1. It's a real competitor to Apple's dominance in the tablet market and is light years ahead of the original Galaxy Tab. We've also got a hands on review with the new Nintendo Wii U as well as a full review of the new TomTom Go Live 82, Canon EOS 600D and the new AMD Vision laptop platform. Read on to check out all this week's hot reviews from TechRadar. Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 reviewThe influx of Android tablets is picking up pace, and the latest from Samsung is a right belter. The Galaxy Tab 10.1 is Samsung's second attempt at a 10-inch Honeycomb, tablet – the first one which was thicker and had an 8MP camera, was canned earlier this year. This one though has sleek good looks and is lighter and thinner than Apple's iPad ...

Gary Marshall: Windows 8 tablets: boom or bust for Microsoft?

By TechRadar, published 17-06-2011

Microsoft has big plans for Windows 8. It's designed to scale from titchy tablets to supersized screens, and it promises to be all things to all men.I hope it delivers, because if Windows 8 is a dud then Microsoft's stuffed.Ed Bott has been tracking the market share numbers, and he's spotted something that should make Steve Ballmer - and Microsoft's shareholders - nervous: Microsoft's share of web browsing has dropped below 90%. Some of that's due to OS X, but most of it is down to iOS and Android. The figures are the canary in the Windows coal mine: mobile is beginning to eat the PC. The numbers aren't huge yet, but they're growing at an extraordinary rate: iPhone browsing share has gone from 0.53% to 1.23% in a year, and the iPad has gone from zero to nearly one percent. That means it's g...

Review: Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1

By TechRadar, published 15-06-2011

Welcome to the top spot, Samsung. The outstanding Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 Honeycomb tablet is lighter and a hair thinner than the Apple iPad 2, and has a smaller footprint than either the Motorola Xoom or the Acer Iconia Tab A500, which are heavier and bulkier than most tablets.Other than a paltry app selection, the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 is a major contender. We reviewed the short-lived Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1V already, but that thicker and heavier device has since been discontinued (It looked as if Vodafone might pick up the 10.1V tab but it is now waiting to release the newer 10.1 model). The only other important players in the tablet market, are the brilliant 10.1-inch Asus Eee Pad Transformer as well as the BlackBerry PlayBook and the HTC Flyer, which are both so-so 7-inch models.Oh, a...

Asus Unveils $200 Eee PC X101

By MaximumPC, published 30-05-2011

Asus displayed more than just the Ultrathin UX21 during Computex's opening hours. Although it seems more minimum PC than Maximum PC, the company also unveiled its all new Eee PC X101. The diminutive notebooks will be just as thin as their UX21 cousins, measuring a slim 17.6mm thick and weighing only 2.1 lbs. And get this – the base model will only set you back about $200, or the cost of a few Xbox 360 games. So how'd Asus get the X101 so cheap? One way was by developing the notebook hand-in-hand with Intel's engineers and installing Intel's MeeGo Linux operating system on the base model. Hot Hardware reports that the Eee PC will include a 10.1 inch screen, Wi-Fi and the Intel N435 processor. Another version of the system, called the X101H, will include the option to replace MeeGo with Wi...

Review: Acer Iconia Tab A500

By TechRadar, published 26-05-2011

In the contest to replace your laptop – and maybe even your TV – Android 3.0 tablets such as the Motorola Xoom are ganging up on the Apple iPad 2 by sheer quantity. We absolutely thrilled over the Asus Eee Pad Transformer, for example. Now it's time for the Acer Iconia Tab A500's day in the sun.In many ways, this is all about the operating system, so we'll admit that the differences between the three main Android 3.0 tabs are marginal at best. You have to choose your OS poison wisely – the iPad 2 is better for music, movies and games, and it has better quality apps and more of them. Meanwhile, the BlackBerry PlayBook is more secure than the competition, has real multi-tasking and even a more fluid interface for controlling your apps (er, all four of them). Android 3.0 Honeycomb table...

Review: HTC Flyer

By TechRadar, published 16-05-2011

HTC has always stood out among the raft of Android phone manufacturers. The company's been partnering with Google since the start, but still forges its own style, which has won it a lot of fans. Now that Android is a major tablet OS, with Android 3.0 appearing on the likes of the Motorola Xoom and Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1V, HTC is still staying separate from the crowd. The most notable change from the norm is the 7-inch screen and the touchscreen stylus, known officially as the Magic Pen. It connects wirelessly to the Flyer, and enables you to annotate, highlight and erase in supported apps. It offers a measure of pressure sensitivity (unlike most styluses on capacitive screens), so may pique the interest of artists.Instead of Android 3.0, the Flyer uses Android 2.3.3, skinned with HTC's fami...

Review: Kobalt G150

By TechRadar, published 04-02-2011

From the get go, Intel's new Sandy Bridge family of PC processors have seemed destined for mobile greatness. Partly that's because Intel never intended the new Core i3, i5 and i7 2000 series chips to take over at the very top of the performance table. That honour remains the reserve of the six-core Gulftown chip, if only just. But Sandy Bridge's status and the first pukka fusion processor for the PC is what really has us foaming over our flat panels. The more components you integrate into the main processor die, the more powerful and space-efficient a chip becomes. With Sandy Bridge, Intel has now packed as many as four cores, the memory controller, graphics, PCI Express connectivity and more into a single slice of 32nm silicon. That spells mobile goodness. As it turns out, the first Core ...

iPad 2: The Skeptic’s Review

A year ago I wrote a skeptic’s review of the first-generation iPad, a more personal report on the original model from my perspective as a tabletophile and a blogger. Since then we’ve seen the launch of a few Android slates – though not the deluge we were perhaps expecting – and of course, most recently, the arrival of the iPad 2. How does the second-generation iPad hold up, and has Apple answered my original complaints? Read on for my iPad 2 Skeptic’s Review. For the full background story of my tablet love, you should probably read the original review. By SlashGear, published 27-03-2011

Welcome to another SlashGear Week in Review! This week was a big one in the mobile world with CTIA underway and lots more going in. We learned that AT&T had offered to purchase T-Mobile for $39 billion. AT&T hopes to repurpose some of the T-Mobile spectrum for 4G service. The full details of the HTC Evo 3D and Evo View 4G tablet surfaced early in the week. The Evo 3D has a 4.3-inch screen and a 1.2GHz processor and should be an interesting device. The Asus Eee Slate EP121 got an official release date. The tablet will hit the UK on April 20 and it will sell for the equivalent of $1627 here in the US, which is a lot of green. Microsoft might be eyeing 2015 for a replacement for the Xbox 360 game console. The tip on the date comes from the portfolio of a designer working with Micros...

Review: Exclusive: Acer Iconia Tab W500

By TechRadar, published 24-03-2011

Tablet or notebook? It's a question not only for the new Acer Iconia Tab W500, but for anyone looking to buy a new portable PC at the moment.Tablets are clearly all the rage; you only need to look at the excitement surrounding the launch of the Apple iPad 2. Many perceive these tablets as holding the key to moving mobile computing forward. The problem is, tablets aren't particularly productive devices. They're about watching movies or listening to music. They're about surfing the web on your sofa, or reading a book in a hammock. Tablets are about entertainment. They're rarely about actually creating the content that they are consuming.Anyone looking to do work or create content on the move is generally limited to using a standard computer. There is a place for showing reports using a tablet...

Zotac unveils new AD02 and AD02 Plus nettops with AMD hardware inside

By SlashGear, published 03-04-2011

Zotac has unveiled a pair of new nettops today that include the new Zbox AD02 and AD02 Plus offerings. Both of the machines run the AMD Brazos platform inside that is combined with the E350 dual-core APU. The machines also have 2GB of DDR3 RAM and have graphics that support DirectX 11 for entertainment content and good multimedia playback. The GPU inside the machines is the Radeon HD6310 unit. Data storage inside the nice looking Plus version of the nettop is to a 250GB HDD. The difference between the standard AD02 and the AD02 plus is that the standard version gets no storage or RAM. The buyer has to add their own hardware to that machine. Other features include a gigabit Ethernet card and WiFi in both machines. Both of the nettops have a single USB 3.0 port and a pair of USB 2.0 ports...

iPhone 5 Will Stick with 3.5-inch Display [Logically]

By SlashGear, published 28-02-2011

Let’s begin this short journey into the Apple mind with a so-called “leaked” image of what they’re calling an iPhone 5 screen photo. What this photo shows is basically black ink printed on transparency paper. Out on the streets they’re saying this is a 4-inch screen that Apple will be using for their next iPhone model. No way. Why? Well before we go into any further proofs, take a look at the top of the phone (on the left.) It’s printed completely uneven – just about as uneven as the notion that iOS will ever be working on a 4-inch screen. Although we’ve printed a post by the title Rumor: Apple to give next iPhone a 4-inch screen, previously, we’ve also noted that instead of this, what’s looking to be much more likely is an over...

ASUS dates Eee Pad/Eee Slate tablet range

By SlashGear, published 28-02-2011

ASUS has confirmed availability for its 2011 tablet range, having brought the various slates out to play at CeBIT 2011 this week. We’re still most interested in the ASUS Eee Pad MeMO, the 7-inch HTC Flyer rival, which the company says will be out in Q3 2011. Meanwhile, the Eee Pad Transformer and Eee Pad Slider – which we played with back in January – will arrive in the UK come mid-April. They’ll run Android 3.0 Honeycomb at launch, as will the MeMO, unlike the demo units we’ve seen so far that have been based on Froyo. Finally, ASUS’ sole Windows 7 tablet, the Eee Slate EP121, will go on sale from early April; in the UK it will be sold through “selected” PC World and Currys stores. No pricing at this stage, though ASUS Germany has said tha...

Sony readying S2 dual-screen Android clamshell tablet?

By TechRadar, published 21-02-2011

Sony could be working on two more unusual tablets for launch in 2011; a two-screened Android clamshell and a Windows 7 slider, named the S1 and S2.Following the rumour that Sony is to launch a PlayStation tablet named the S1 last week, the S2 is set to be an Android tablet running Android 3.0, and featuring two 5.5-inch displays. According to Engadget's two sources, the shape closely resembles an oval cylinder when closed - a bit like a flask. It certainly sounds, er, different, although not exactly economical with space. Flask-like AndroidWhen it comes to spec, Engadget has been told it will offer a Tegra 2 SoC, WiFi, 3G and at least one rear-facing camera, although which way is rear-facing may be hard to tell. The source also said that Sony will be working on the Honeycomb OS to make the...

A/V Accessories Are Ridiculously Overpriced, and I’ve Had Enough of It

By SlashGear, published 20-02-2011

As you’ve probably gathered from reading my columns here on SlashGear, I’m pretty much obsessed with every single product that can help improve my entertainment in the living room. Whether it’s an HDTV, set-top box, game console, or surround-sound system, I love it. Over the past several months, I’ve been turning to audio-video accessories to quell my insatiable desire to get my hands on more tech goodies. I’ve bought universal remotes, home-theater cables, HDMI switchers, and so many more products I can barely keep track. Needless to say, I’ve been quite busy improving my home-theater set-up. But earlier this week, I decided that it was time to buy some 3D glasses for my 3D set. When I went to the store, however, I quickly realized that the glasses cost $150. And at that poi...

T-Mobile G-Slate hands-on [Video]

By SlashGear, published 14-02-2011

After a brief on-stage appearance at CES 2011, T-Mobile has brought along the LG G-Slate to MWC 2011 to launch alongside its European Optimus Pad cousin. As we’ve already seen, it’s a slick 8.9-inch slate running Tegra 2 and Android 3.0 Honeycomb; it also has support for T-Mobile USA’s HSPA+ network for high-speed connectivity on the go. Video after the cut While we weren’t sure about 3D on a tablet-scale device before – especially without a glasses-free display – the slick user experience on the G-Slate is making us consider a change of heart. You need red/green glasses, but LG has finessed in added controls to switch between twin-view, 3D and 2D previews, and the process of getting content from the slate and onto a big-screen 3D TV is thankfully stra...

Review: Creative Ziio 7-inch

By TechRadar, published 02-08-2011

Tablets are the next big thing! They're brilliant! They're wonderful to use! They're super-convenient and awesome! That's what everybody is saying, isn't it? But where are all these brilliant devices that everyone's been squawking so loudly about? It's fairly safe to say that the tablet market hasn't exactly exploded in a whirlwind of fiery, world-beating über-tablets. Not yet, anyway.Until the likes of the BlackBerry Playbook, the Motorola Xoom and the Asus Eee Pads finally make their way onto the shelves and into our homes (not long, now), we're left with a fairly disjointed-looking product line-up.The latest Android tablet to grace the TechRadar office is the Creative Ziio 7-inch. It was announced last year alongside the Creative Ziio 10-inch, which has yet to hit the shops. At just £199...

Compulab Trim Slice puts Tegra 2 in ultra-compact desktop PC

By SlashGear, published 25-01-2011

We’ve got Tegra 2 in tablets and Tegra 2 in phones; why not Tegra 2 in a desktop computer? That’s just what the Compulab Trim Slice offers, a super-compact desktop – only slightly larger than a 2.5-inch HDD – which nonetheless offers both HDMI and Dual-Link DVI ports for twin displays, 1GB of RAM, WiFi b/g/n and gigabit ethernet in a fanless metal chassis. There’s also Bluetooth, a full-sized SDHC slot and a microSDHC slot, up to 64GB of SATA SSD storage and S/PDIF digital audio. Other ports include four USB 2.0, one USB Device port and a serial port; Compulab say that more than one OS will be preinstalled out of the box, though don’t actually specify which platforms that will include. Not bad for something measuring just 5.1 x 3.7 x 0.6 inches. Prici...
