We review Asus' EeeBox EB1501, a mini-desktop PC the size of a paperback novel that's capable of surfing the net, writing papers, and playing back full HD 1080p content. Like the netbook, the nettop PC has a cute look to it that makes it easy to envision sitting anywhere from sitting on a desk to next to an HDTV. Asus, the manufacturer that inadvertently started the netbook craze, is betting that there is some longer-term viability to these diminutive PCs. The Asus Eee Box 1501 is one of the few nettops that doubles as a DVD player, but it’s the way it handles all other video that makes it a bit of a conflicted device. Our Asus Eee Box 1501 review unit was running on an Intel Atom 330 processor at 1.6GHz, 2GB of DDR2 RAM, a 250GB hard drive, nVidia ION Integrated video card and Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit for the operating system. The Eee Box 1501 has a slick design, even if the included optical drive makes it slightly bigger than comparable nettops. We felt there was a bonus in that the Eee Box didn’t feel too hot, nor make a lot of noise, except for the times it would take in a CD or DVD.The Eee Box 1501 has a number of ports, which seem to fall in line with other nettops on the market. The slot-in DVD player is the most unusual.
Nettops like the $475 Asus Eee Box PC EB1501 aren't meant for getting work done. Instead, they promise an end-around to the closed environment of your cable box, opening up your living room to the near-infinite amount of content available via various online video sources. With its clean, understated design, the Asus Eee Box EB1501 not only looks the part of a living room component, but it also has the technical chops to play almost any kind of content, including most 1080p video sources. We could almost recommend this system if it wasn't caught between new, more affordable Web-enabled Blu-ray players, and more capable slim tower PCs that cost just a little bit more. The Asus Eee Box PC EB1501 is the second-generation Nettop from Asus, and is the first we've seen from the vendor with Nvidia's Ion chipset. While the Ion chipset brings an assortment of underlying technologies to low-power Netbooks and Nettops, the most relevant piece of graphics hardware is its Nvidia GeForce 9400M chip, a budget 3D chip designed to provide basic video and 3D graphics capabilities, including, according to Nvidia, support for high definition video playback at 1080p.
Because it can handle HD video and includes a DVD writer, this media centre can also replace your desktop computer, with the added advantage of a 70% reduction in energy consumption according to Asus. The EeeBox PC EB1501 doesn't just look sleek it and elegant, it really is small. Despite being made entirely of plastic, the finish is good and the whole thing doesn't feel too cheap. An aluminium stand is included, and the computer sits at an angle in it, which increases the impression that it's light. It's very when you use it for office work, and doesn't make itself heard when you give it more difficult tasks like photo editing or video games. The fan is more audible, but not loud enough to become annoying. When we watched DVDs, we were pleasantly surprised by how quiet it was. Despite the small size of the unit, the is very complete. At the front, there's a slot-loading DVD drive, two USB ports, a five-in-one memory card reader, two mini jacks and an infrared receiver. At the back, there are another four USB 2.0 ports, HDMI and VGA video inputs, eSATA, RJ45 and a S/PDIF optical audio output. The WiFi antenna is outside the case and can be rotated to get better reception. A VESA stand is included, allowing you attach the PC to the wall, slotting it in behind your TV for instance.
