Asus B43J

The Asus B43J is an example of this company's push to expand its credibility among business users--on the bottom of this laptop, Asus even adds a clear plastic business card slot. The B43J is attractive, fairly powerful, and supports up to three external monitors. I hear that the more monitors you have, the more productive you are (or something like that), so Asus is clearly trying to show its dedication to productivity in the workplace. Our review unit, which costs around $700 (as of 6/28/2011), sports a 2.67GHz Intel Core i5-560M processor, 4GB of RAM (upgradable to 8GB), and a partitioned 320GB hard drive. The unit also has an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5470 graphics card with 512MB of video memory and runs the 64-bit version of Windows 7 Professional. As for connectivity, the Asus B43J has it all: 802.11a/b/g/n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 2.1+EDR, a gigabit ethernet port, and even a modem hookup (just in case you want to kick it old-school with a dial-up connection). Also included is a built-in webcam with a privacy slide, and a built-in microphone. In our WorldBench 6 benchmark tests, the Asus B43J scored 114. In both the All-Purpose notebooks category and the Business notebooks category, this is excellent.

Asus B43J-A1B

These days, business laptops have to meet a wide variety of needs. Professionals require a machine that provides computing power, networking options, connections galore, and hours of battery life. The Asus B43J-A1B ($1,199.99 street) fills most of these needs, but if battery life is a major concern, then this laptop is going to disappoint. Though quite a few manufacturers, including Asus, have brought some great looking business laptops to market, like the Dell Vostro 3300 ($910 street, 3.5 stars), most laptops, like the Lenovo ThinkPad T410s ($1,504 direct, 4 stars), tend to stick to the basics. The Asus B43J-A1B keeps a conservative look, but puts a fashionable twist on it that turns basic black into something more black tie. The frame around the screen and the base of the chassis is matte plastic, but the lid and palm rest get a stylish and protective aluminum casing that resists scratches and won't attract fingerprints. The 14-inch widescreen offers a 1366 by 768 resolution for 720p video viewing, and is topped with a 2-megapixel webcam that has a built-in lens cover. It weighs a hefty 5.46 pounds The full-sized keyboard eschews the chiclet-style design that is so popular in consumer laptops, opting instead for a more traditional design.

ASUS B43J (A1B)

The ASUS B43J represents the company's first serious foray into the business notebook category, and it offers plenty of perks for professionals, including a water-resistant keyboard and your choice of facial or fingerprint login. Coupled with an ATI GPU and Eyefinity technology that supports up to three external monitors, this $1,249 system is powerful enough for hardcore multitaskers. However, some buyers will want to think twice about toting this 14-inch laptop to and from the conference room and bringing it on the road. Our first impression of the ASUS B43J is that it's solid and utilitarian. The 13.8 x 9.6 x 1.4-inch system isn't super slim or feather light--it weighs 5.6 pounds--but the solid metal interior and scratch-resistant aluminum panels makes the notebook feel sturdy. Overall, the understated brushed aluminum lid, minimalist deck, and simple black paint job all work in the B43J's favor, but it won't exactly turn heads in the conference room. The B43J's business DNA is apparent not only from its aesthetics, but also from such features as a button to disable the touchpad--very useful for those who accidentally brush the surface while typing--and the ASUS Scene Switch toggle for presentations (more on this below) to the left of the keyboard.
