ASRock Z68 Extreme4 Intel Z68 Motherboard Review

When Intel announced its second generation Core processors we had 2 different chipsets to choose from the P67 chipset and the H67 chipset. P67 was made for gamers and overclockers having advanced overclocking features and being able to support Intel’s “K” series processors. H67 was the cheaper option taking advantage of the built-in graphics of Sandy Bridge processors. Both chipsets were successful, but there were many people that wanted features in both chipsets. There is where the Z68 chipset comes in. It fills that void allowing users to overclock their system, while using the built-in graphics. Z68 offers plenty of other features as well, but we will get to that in just a little bit. Our first jump in to the Z68 chipset will be with the ASRock Z68 Extreme4 motherboard. This board features ASRock’s advanced V8 power phase design, 3 PCI-E x16 slots, SATA 6GB/s and USB 3.0 support, Intel’s Smart Response Technology, and LucidLogix Virtu GPU virtualization software. Let’s get right in and see what Z68 and the ASRock Z68 Extreme4 motherboard is all about! Special thanks to ASRock for providing us with the Z68 Extreme4 Intel Z68 Motherboard to review.

ASRock Z68 Extreme 4 review

ASRock has four Z68 boards in its mobo line-up from the all-singing, all-dancing flagship Fatal1ty Z68 Professional Gen3 to the quietly confident Z68 Pro3-MWe've got two of ASRock's new boards based on this new chipset, the Z68 Pro3 and the fuller featured and newest edition to ASRock's extensive range of boards carrying the Extreme banner, the Z68 Extreme. This sits just under the Fatal1ty Z68 board in the family line-up. Once everybody discovered the limitations of the Sandy Bridge's launch chipsets; namely the P67's lack of support for the new processor's integrated graphics but lots of overclocking potential and the H67's graphic support but no OC-ability, keen eyes were fixed on the Z68, the next enthusiast/mainstream 6 series chipset on Intel's roadmap. The Z68 offers the best of both worlds with integrated graphics and overclocking support. Well designed ASRock's Z68 Extreme 4 is a well designed and thought out board with plenty of room around the major components, including the CPU socket. So you can install quite a hefty third-party cooler (we used a Scythe Yasya in testing) without much problem. While we're on the cooling front, the Z68 chip and the major power circuitry parts are all passively cooled by the board too.
