It's about time AMD released a properly new processor architecture. Until that happens, it's stuck with execution cores that largely date back to 2003. With that in mind, can the AMD Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition really be a plausible performance processor?AMD has certainly made life easier for its top quad-core chip by pricing it competitively. The Phenom II X4 965 BE is cheaper than Intel's entry level quads, the Core i5 750 and Core i5 760. However, at 3.4GHz the 965 is clocked much higher than the Intel opposition. However, the 965's biggest challenge might just be the cheaper of AMD's new six-core processors. The Phenom II X6 1055T is yours for an extra £10 or so. That's awfully tempting. Of course, what the 1055T doesn't have is an unlocked CPU multiplier. That's an enthusiast-friendly feature that usually makes for easier and more effective overclocking and could tip the balance in favour of the quad-core 965. Survival for AMD's Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition is all about careful positioning in the price lists. Going by our multi-threaded benchmarks, you'd think AMD has nailed it.
With each new release from AMD they are able to fine tune their processors a bit more than before. We are talking about more than just adding a few exta clock cycles or a bump in speed. There are more subtle changes that result in a product that meets consumers needs much better. AMD has not forgotten that many of their consumers are overclockers and we will be of course taking a look at how the newly announced Phenom II 965 Black Edition does in the overclocking arena but first lets take a look at the shiny new CPU. Sporting a default speed of 3.4GHz the 965 comes in 200MHz faster than the previous flagship the 955. This is in keeping with AMD’s overall history and planning. The 965 raises the ceiling in terms of maximum TDP but we have also been told it should be a better overclocker. We will put that to the test later, but for now here are the stats. As you can see the new Max TDP goes to 140W which is a bit high but not unexpected for the top end AMD CPU. Other noteworthy specs include the $245 pricing which holds the line for the flagship and also means that you can expect the 955’s to drop in price almost immediately. AMD has informed us that the new 965 will be available from the following vendors at least initially.
Since the introduction of its Phenom II processors at the beginning of this year, AMD has been, uh, chipping away at Intel's performance lead. (Yeah, I wrote that.). Well, that's sort of true, at least. The Phenom II is a fine processor and very much a match for Intel's Core 2 chips, but it's not really up to the challenge of going toe to toe with the Core i7. Instead, AMD has concentrated on matching up against the Core 2 processors in the middle of Intel's lineup. Thanks to aggressive pricing and some savvy moves, like selling a relatively affordable series of unlocked Black Edition processors, the Phenom II has had some success. In fact, AMD captured three of five spots in our most recent system guide's main configs. That success is threatened by the imminent arrival of mainstream Core i7 derviatives, code-named Lynnfield, in the next month or so. Before that happens, AMD has decided to position itself a little bit better by introducing a new speed grade at the top of its Phenom II lineup—the reason we are gathered here today—and dropping its prices on some lower speed grades.
AMD is launching a brand new flagship desktop processor today, dubbed the Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition. As you can probably surmise from its name--if you're familiar with AMD's naming convention--the Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition is virtually identical to the 955 it supplants at the top of AMD's desktop processor line-up, save for the 965's higher default clock speed. Whereas the 955 clocked in at a speedy 3.2GHz, the new 965 arrives at a lofty 3.4GHz, making it the highest clocked CPU to come from AMD to date. The Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition is based on the same core as all current socket AM3, quad-core Phenom II processors and it as the same cache configuration and overall feature set. There are some slight differences to its specifications, however, which we have listed for you below. The 965 BE's differentiating features are, as we've mentioned, it's higher frequency of 3.4GHz and also its higher maximum TDP of 140W. Please take note of the higher TDP, as not all socket AM2+/AM3 motherboards will support it. Once you're done taking a gander at the specifications below, check out some related articles and hunker down for some testing and benchmarks as we find out what AMD's new Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition is made of...
