Acer Iconia 6120

The Acer Iconia 6120 laptop is one of those marquee, "halo" products meant to draw attention to the brand as much as to satisfy everyday computing needs. In many ways it's a pretty ordinary 14-inch laptop. The standout feature, however, is its second 14-inch multitouch screen, which replaces the entire lower keyboard-and-touchpad deck. As high-concept products go, the Iconia is fairly affordable at $1199 (as of May 2, 2011). Still, at that price it isn't a very good deal, and you're better off choosing something a little more down to earth. Acer's dual-touch implementation of a Windows laptop is about as good as you could expect it to be, but it's just not a great idea in the first place. You don't actually get a whole lot of computing power for your $1199. The system ships with a 2.66GHz Core i5-480M; that processor isn't slow, but it is part of the previous generation of Intel Core CPUs. Acer would get better performance and battery life from one of the newer Sandy Bridge models. The Iconia also relies on Intel's integrated graphics, which is fine for everyday desktop productivity stuff, but a poor choice for high-def video playback or 3D gaming. Here, again, the newer generation of Intel processors would help a lot.

Acer Iconia 6120

Depending on your taste for the unusual, the Acer Iconia 6120 ($1199.99 street, 3 stars) is either teetering on the edge of madness or pushing the boundaries of innovation. It boasts two 14-inch widescreens that are hinged together like a traditional clamshell laptop, where the bottom screen replaces all the physical keys with virtual ones. Both screens are touch-enabled and are complemented by a hodgepodge of custom software from Acer, ranging from a full virtual keyboard experience to its own Web browser that utilizes both screens. Now we've seen dual screens like this in handhelds like the Nintendo 3DS and Toshiba Libretto W105 ($1,099 direct, 1.5 stars), but never one quite this big. If you do a lot of typing, the virtual keyboard will drive you absolutely mad. But if you consume tons of media and fancy a second display, the Iconia is a unique and innovative take on multitasking. The Iconia is a 14-inch laptop and designed to be treated as such. Even though there are two screens, there's a predefined top and bottom half. In other words, it's not meant to be held like a book, since weight isn't distributed equally between both sides (the bottom half, where all the ports and components reside, is much heavier) and the lack of an accelerometer (to change the screen orientation) seems to point to that.

Acer Iconia 6120

The Acer Iconia 6120 isn't the first dual-screen Windows 7 tablet on the block. The Toshiba Libretto W105 had two 7-inch displays and was about the size and weight of a paperback, but its short battery life and lackluster software doomed that device to collectible status. The Iconia is different. It's more like a coffee table book, a book that features two large 14-inch displays and innovative touch-enabled software, plus a Core i5 processor. But does this $1,199 tablet-book represent the future of laptops, or is it just a pricey experiment destined to appeal only to early adopters? The Acer Iconia 6120 has a fairly sophisticated look. The lid and bottom are both a champagne-colored metal. The bottom, one solid panel, has two rows of small square cutouts for ventilation and speakers, and can be removed easily with two sliding latches. There are only two physical buttons on the Iconia: The right hinge has a power button, and the left hinge activates the virtual keyboard. The Iconia's two touchscreens are each 14 inches, surrounded by a glossy black bezel. While the Iconia's dimensions--13.5 x 9.7 x 1.2 inches--are typical for a 14-inch system, the notebook is on the heavy side: 6 pounds. We definitely noticed it carrying it home in a messenger bag.

Acer Iconia 6120

Acer's inventive Iconia laptop falls into that exclusive category we sometimes call executive laptops. These are typically high-priced, highly designed systems that look great on a CEO's desk or in the first-class airline lounge. But they're also usually underpowered, overpriced, and too reliant on gimmicks that offer little in the way of actual utility. The high-concept feature that sets the Iconia apart is actually two: two 14-inch touch screens. Instead of a screen and a keyboard, the Iconia ditches the keyboard for a second screen, which can be used either as an extended desktop or for a virtual keyboard. (We've seen a similar concept before, but with dual 7-inch screens, in the Toshiba Libetto W100.) In practice, it works better than you might expect. Onscreen typing is still nowhere near as intuitive as the real thing, but a few generations of iPhones and iPads have trained us to tap-type without too much trouble, at least for short writing tasks. The experience is much closer to typing on an iPad than typing on one of the many Windows tablets we've tried over the years--and that's a good thing. There were still frustrations with the Iconia, however.
