With its 23-inch, touch-sensitive, Full HD screen, the Aspire AZ5610 is the first of Acer's all-in-one computers we've tested. Acer is marketing the AZ5610 as a PC featuring next-generation touch-screen technology and no-compromise performance all packed into a space-saving, all-in-one design. Let's see if it lives up to expectations. In its promotional pictures the AZ5610 looks great, but don't go expecting the same high-quality finish as an aluminium iMac, as the Z5610's appearance is somewhat deceptive. The casing is made almost entirely from plastic which dips and depresses in places when pushed with your fingers—nice! On the whole, though, it's sufficiently attractive to look good on your desk. The are available as optional extras, and to be honest, I'm not sure they're worth the trouble. The finish could be better in both accessories as neither the keyboard nor the mouse has the luxury feel you might expect. In fact, the overall look and feel is a little disappointing. Plus, the wireless receiver is supplied in the form of a USB adapter that attaches to the left-hand side of the screen. This is neither stylish nor particularly attractive, and it flashes blue each time you hit a key or move the mouse.
Acer's Aspire Z5610 is kind of like a budget version of the Gateway One ZX6810-01. Both have 23-inch, 1080p-capable multitouch displays and top-notch general performance, but the $900 Acer (price as of December 8, 2009) lacks the $1400 Gateway's gaming grunt--as well as extras like a TV tuner and a media center remote control. Still, the Z5610 offers a lot for its cost. Besides its big high-def screen, the goodies include a 2.6GHz Intel dual-core processor that delivered an impressive score of 101 in our WorldBench 6 benchmark suite. This score compares extremely well with those of the $2000 Sony Vaio L117FX/B (a 24-inch multitouch) and the aforementioned Gateway One ZX6810-01, which both earned 105 in WorldBench 6. Those results were beaten only by the new Core i7- and Core i5-based 27-inch Apple iMacs, the category-leading speedsters. Tested using 64-bit Windows 7 and Boot Camp, the $2200 Apple iMac (27-inch / Core i7) scored 128 to the $2000 iMac (27-inch / Core i5)'s result of 123. Blazing. The Z5610 was trumped by all those PCs in our gaming tests, but its 512MB ATI Radeon HD 4570 graphics chip does deliver playable frame rates that go neck-and-neck with HP's $1460 TouchSmart 600xt.
