The 15.6-inch $779 Acer Aspire TimelineX 5830TG-6614 is just the ticket for students and families searching for a value multimedia notebook. With a Core i5 processor, Nvidia graphics, and long battery life, the 5830TG can handle high-definition movies as well as graphically demanding games. Read on to find out if this entertainment-centric laptop has everything you need.Click to EnlargeWhile it uses the same chassis as the Acer Aspire TimelineX 5830TG-6402, the 5830TG-6614 still stands out for its simple and clean lines. The cobalt-blue aluminum lid is a welcome departure from the usual black-and-gray color schemes of most notebooks. However, we noticed a significant amount of flex in the lid.The notebook's deck uses an attractive silver aluminum shade accompanied by a cobalt-blue palm rest, which reminded us of a high-tech Detroit Lions uniform. Nestled between the power and Power Manager buttons above the keyboard is a large speaker grille.Despite sharing the same dimensions with its 5.4-pound predecessor, the 14.9 x 9.8 x 1.2-inch, 5.6-pound TimelineX 5830TG-6614 is slightly heavier. Still, this laptop is lighter than the 6-pound, 14.9 x 10 x 1.4-inch ASUS K53SV.
The Acer Aspire TimelineX 5830TG-6402 ($799.99 direct) is a laptop that packs a one-two punch of good looks and solid performance, with a combination of processor and graphics that usually costs significantly more. It does this by making a few sacrifices, which result in a limited feature set and poor heat dispersion. But despite these flaws, the Acer Aspire TimelineX 5830TG-6402 is definitely worth a look. Acer updated its popular TimelineX series in June, giving the machines in it a slimmer profile, sturdy construction, and bold colors. Our review unit of the 5830TG-6402 in this family came in a cool cobalt blue color, with an aluminum-covered lid and a metal-and-plastic chassis. This combination resulted in a lightweight laptop (5.4 pounds) with almost no discernible flexing in its body or keyboard area. The chassis is slender, measuring only 1.23 by 14.88 by 9.80 inches (HWD), which doesn't leave a lot of room for heat to escape. During our more demanding benchmark tests, the surface temperature on the underside of the laptop reached 111 degrees Fahrenheit (as measured with a Fluke IR thermometer). The palm rest is covered with plastic, but the keyboard and number pad are surrounded with bare, brushed aluminum.
Acer's Timeline series has always been a premier sub-brand in terms of design, and the Aspire TimelineX AS5830TG-6402 is no different. This 15-inch laptop features an Intel Core i5 processor, Nvidia graphics, and excellent Dolby speakers, all inside a metallic blue chassis that's stylish and feels sturdy. Priced at $799, the 5830T is a bit more expensive than budget notebooks, but it's worth the extra dough. The Acer Aspire TimelineX 5830T shares the same aesthetics as its smaller sibling, the 13-inch Aspire TimelineX 3830T. The smooth blue brushed aluminum on the lid picked up few fingerprints. Unlike the MacBook Pro, the brushed aluminum doesn't extend to the bottom of the machine; instead, Acer opted for a more budget-friendly basic black plastic.Opening the 5830T's lid reveals an attractive combination of brushed silver and a slightly more muted brushed blue. The silver surrounds the black chicklet keys and extends to the Dolby Home Theater speakers above the keyboard. The blue finishes off the palm rest and touchpad before wrapping around the front edge. Measuring 14.9 x 9.8 x 1.2 inches and weighing 5.4 pounds, the 5830T is not really travel-friendly, but it can be easily moved from room to room.
