Acer Aspire TimelineX 4820T

At a weight of 2.07 kilograms Acer Aspire TimelineX 4820T is reasonably portable for a 14-inch notebook. It has a brushed aluminium lid and palm-rest. The aluminium finish runs along the contours of the keypad, with a glossy black plastic finish on the bezel and keypad adding a touch of class. The wide and seamless touch-pad is a dark shade of grey, giving it a nice contrast against the lighter grey shades on the palm-rest. The palm-rest includes three LED indicators representing the display on, power on and Wi-Fi on/off status from left to right. Acer Aspire 4820T - Cover lid The Aspire 4820T incorporates special function keys at the top of the keypad, which are marked with light blue colour-coded icons. Also, the multimedia, volume control and brightness control keys are marked in blue. The built-in speakers are located at the top of the keyboard and make use of Dolby Home Theatre system technology. The keypad keys are flat and isolated from each other by a narrow gap, but this is not an isolated keypad. Rather, Acer chooses to call this a floating keypad.

Laptop Reviews: Compare Laptops and Notebooks

The first Acer Timeline generation democratised slimness and high battery life in the little world of laptops. Unfortunately performance was rather disappointing on the first versions. With the new Timeline X, Acer has kept the best of what the first generation had and added a good dose of extra performance thanks to the Core i processors and ATI graphics card. The TimelineX represents the new "" version! While the first Timeline only imitated brushed aluminium, the TimelineX does actually use it for the hood. The finish is still excellent with good quality plastics. We like the workmanship and the robust feel. It's just a shame that the screen surround and keyboard are in glossy black plastic because marks and scratches quickly show up! The is wide and is made up of slightly separated flat keys. Keying is soft and quiet, comfortable to use. The multi-touch is nice and wide and mirrors the 16:9 screen format. The glide is fluid and rapid thanks to a nice matte surface area. You still get good precision, which means you can get away without using a mouse much of the time. The left and right clicks are on the same bar, just under the touchpad. The clicks are firm, no problems here. The gives a good quality image in spite of a lack of sharpness.

Acer Aspire 4820T review

Acer released the Timeline series last year to critical acclaim, but while the range boasted excellent portability, performance was slightly lacking. The new TimelineX range rectifies this and, despite a few usability issues, the Acer Aspire 4820T simply has it all. The latest in cutting-edge technology is present, with an Intel Core i5 processor joined by 4096MB of DDR3 memory. Performance is stunning and you'll be able to run the most resource-intensive applications and programs with ease. Our review unit featured an ATi Mobility Radeon HD 5650 graphics card, providing the level of graphical performance we'd expect from a gaming laptop. However, retail units will feature a lower-powered 5470 chip, producing roughly half the power of the aforementioned. You'll still be able to edit photos and HD movies, but the latest games won't run quite so smoothly. Slim chassis This level of power is particularly impressive considering the size of the laptop. At only 31mm thick, it's easy to slip into a bag and the machine also weighs just 2.1kg – meaning it only narrowly misses out on ultraportable status.
