Acer's Aspire 8943G notebook is about as far from the company's budget netbooks as you could get in a computer and yet still have a battery. A sizeable desktop replacement, with slick, minimalist design and high quality materials, the Aspire 8943G doesn't stint on specifications, either, with an Intel Core i7 CPU and lashings of RAM. Can an Acer PC really compete, not just on performance but aesthetics too, with Apple's well-esteemed MacBook Pro line? Check out the full SlashGear review after the cut. You can't accuse Acer of stinting on the core specifications. The Aspire 8943G packs Intel's 1.73GHz quad-core Core i7-740QM, paired with 8GB of DDR3 memory and Radeon HD 5850 graphics with 2GB of dedicated memory. Storage is a single 500GB 5,400rpm hard-drive, and the display is an 18.4-inch LCD running at 1920 x 1080. Acer quote 220-nit brightness and 8ms contrast ratio, and the screen is certainly bright and clear, with sharpness that puts other notebooks to shame. A webcam is embedded in the bezel, and there's a combo Blu-ray player and DVD burner. Connectivity, meanwhile, includes WiFi b/g/n and Bluetooth 2.1+EDR as standard, along with gigabit ethernet, HDMI, VGA, FireWire, eSATA, five USB 2.0 ports, audio in/out, S/PDIF and a 5-in-1 multiformat memory card reader.
With its mammoth dimensions, 3.91kg weight and large 18.4-inch screen, the Aspire 8943G falls firmly into the desktop replacement category. Unfortunately under the hood there's a surprising lack of power because the Acer packs an entry-level dual-core 2.13GHz Intel Core i3 330M processor and only 2GB of DDR3 RAM. With these two core components the Acer falls behind every other notebook here. In our benchmarks these components restricted the 8943G's performance; its PCMark Vantage Suite, TV & Movies and Productivity scores of 5511, 3446 and 4619 are the lowest results here. Thankfully Acer saw fit to use ATI's Mobility Radeon HD 5650 GPU with 1GB of memory and this gives the Aspire reasonable graphics credentials. It returned figures of 49fps and 17fps in Street Fighter IV and World in Conflict at 1920 x 1080 pixels with both games running in high detail. Reducing some of the detail brought the World in Conflict figure up to 32fps.In terms of build quality the 8943G inspires confidence; the notebook exhibits little keyboard flex, both keyboard and trackpad are great to work on and the 18.4-inch LCD produces fantastic visuals.
We previously reviewed the Acer Aspire Ethos 8943G as a pre-production model back in May and have now managed to get our hands on the full production model. Acer's Aspire range offers a huge amount of consumer-focused machines at all price points. The Ethos 8943G sits atop the range and is built to provide cutting-edge power and big-screen, high-definition entertainment for the whole family. Without doubt this is the best equipped laptop we've seen to date, featuring a quad-core Intel Core i7 processor and a staggering 16,384MB of DDR3 memory. Yes, that's 16GB!Storage is equally impressive, with two 640GB hard drives installed side by side for a stunning 1.2TB of data storage. With such a specification, we assumed this would be the most powerful laptop you can buy but, unfortunately, that's not quite the case. While this is certainly an extremely powerful machine, we've seen laptops half the price that deliver exactly the same level of performance. Where the Ethos really shines is its high-end design and big-screen usability. The brushed-metal lid and interior contrast well with the black palmrest to create a luxurious appearance.
If you're in the market for a notebook that does double duty as a full-fledged entertainment center, then take a good look at Acer's new Aspire 8943G. We love the minimalist aluminum design, and the beautiful 18.4-inch screen is great for watching Blu-ray movies and TV shows. Plus, the Dolby-powered speakers will allow you to hear both dialogue and explosions from across the room. Worried about power? This desktop replacement sports a quad-core CPU and a whopping 8GB of RAM. But a major flaw in the wireless card brought our esteem for this beautiful $1,599 multimedia machine down a notch or two.We were immediately struck by the Aspire 8943G's elegant, understated design. The brushed aluminum lid is both handsome and fingerprint-proof, and its only decoration is a tasteful chrome Acer logo. Under the hood this aesthetic continues, with aluminum dominating the upper part of the deck, giving way to a black strip encompassing the palm rest and touchpad area. Coming in at 17.3 x 11.6 x 1.7 inches, this 8.4-pound system has a large footprint but is still relatively easy to carry from room to room.Acer kept the deck uncluttered only three buttons on the hinge cylinder: quick launch for the Acer Arcade and a user-defined function on the left, and Power on the right.
